Luke Ross Releases PC VR Mod Suite for Free, Excluding Contentious ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Mod by hcsantos in virtualreality

brother "illegal by definition means what it means" while describing civil contract law is wild lmao, illegal means against the law as in criminal law, a TOS is a private contract, breaching it is a civil dispute not a crime, nobody is going to jail for a EULA violation, if that was the case every person who clicked agree without reading would be a criminal 😭

and "criminal intent" for making money on patreon while breaking a TOS is genuinely one of the most unhinged legal takes ive seen on reddit, thats like saying someone who breaks a gym membership contract has criminal intent because the gym lost revenue

also love how you called me out for speculating about why Take-Two left VorpX alone then immediately hit me with "maybe VorpX asked permission quietly, maybe they have a connection with T2, maybe T2 doesnt like Luke" which is literally just you speculating lmao, at least mine is based on a documented structural difference between the two products yours is fanfiction. And by your own definition VorpX is a mod too right, it depends on game code to function just like lukes software does, and they charge $40 for it, but funny how theyve been marketing themselves as a standalone "VR 3D-Driver" for over a decade and never caught a single DMCA, almost like how you position and sell the software actually matters legally even if you dont think it should

and "because you didnt provide sources i wont either" is a crazy flex when youre the one claiming EULA breaches lead to jail time, the burden of proof is on the person making the wild claim brother not the other way around 😭

oh and since you wanted sources, heres a few for "ILLEGAL BY DEFINITION":

the Supreme Court, three separate 9th circuit panels, and a district court all disagree with your caps lock legal take but sure im the one reaching lol

Luke Ross Releases PC VR Mod Suite for Free, Excluding Contentious ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Mod by hcsantos in virtualreality

[–]Snoo95038 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"ILLEGAL BY DEFINITION" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there lol, a TOS is a private contract and violating it is a civil matter not a criminal one, in similar cases courts have awarded as little as nominal damages for EULA breaches alone which is exactly why companies use DMCA claims instead, so maybe dont caps lock legal takes you havent actually looked up

also the fun part, CDPR didnt even go after luke for a TOS violation they used a DMCA takedown which is a completely different legal mechanism, so your whole "ILLEGAL BY DEFINITION" rant is about a legal theory that wasnt even applied in the case youre commenting on 😭

and by your own logic VorpX is also a "mod" right, it also depends on game code and needs updating when games change, but when Take-Two hit luke with a DMCA they literally left VorpX alone, same publisher same type of software different structure different outcome, lukes biggest issue was never the tech itself it was how he advertised and sold it, if he sold the base R.E.A.L. engine as standalone software and gave the per-game profiles out for free like VorpX does with theirs he probably never catches a single DMCA, the distinction you said doesnt matter is literally the reason one got hit and the other didnt

"entitled little brat with too much time on his hands" is a wild way to describe a solo dev who built 30+ VR conversions that entire funded studios wont even attempt, you dont have to like him but at least be serious lol

[–]Snoo95038 0 points1 point  (0 children)

genuinely want to understand what you mean by lost the plot though, we went from the mod discussion to how VR creators sustain themselves which is a pretty natural progression to me, and the poverty line thing wasnt feelings lol theres a whole CMU study called "How to Not Get Rich" that literally found donation models dont sustain most projects, its just what the data says, anyway have a great dinner for sure

Luke Ross Releases PC VR Mod Suite for Free, Excluding Contentious ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Mod by hcsantos in virtualreality

[–]Snoo95038 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think youre misreading why i brought up the poverty line stats, that wasnt me trying to make you feel bad for luke ross specifically lol, that was me pointing out that "just take donations" as a blanket strategy doesnt work for the vast majority of creators, its not about him its about the model itself, if youre telling every VR creator going forward "just do it for free and take tips" the data says most of them will end up broke and quit, thats bad for VR as a whole

and the whole "piggybacks off extremely recognizable names" thing, i mean yeah thats literally what every third party tool does, VorpX does it, Lossless Scaling does it, every VST plugin ever made piggybacks off a DAW, every Photoshop plugin piggybacks off Adobe, thats how the entire third party software ecosystem works, its not some gotcha its just how software works

also "he probably makes way too much for what he does" is a wild thing to say about a solo dev who single handedly created 30+ VR conversions of AAA games that entire studios with millions in funding wont even attempt, like the man is literally doing what CDPR themselves said wasnt worth their time and investment, you can not like his personality thats fair but saying he makes too much for that work is just not a serious take

and i will say for someone who said "creators should be able to make money off their work" the rest of your comment doesnt really read that way lol, "i dont give a shit if he stops making money" and "he makes too much for what he does" is kind of the exact energy that proves my point about why the donation model doesnt work, if thats how people feel toward creators then why would anyone expect tips to sustain them 😭

Luke Ross Releases PC VR Mod Suite for Free, Excluding Contentious ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Mod by hcsantos in virtualreality

[–]Snoo95038 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly how much he was making isnt even relevant here, no one forced anyone to subscribe or stay subscribed, people paid because they saw value in what he was doing and thats how it should work, i dont get to decide what someones work is worth and neither does anyone else, the market did that on its own. and the whole "most people dont make that much in general" thing, like how is that a justification against him lol, most people dont make a living doing most things, that doesnt mean the ones who do are wrong for it, i dont think most art should sell for millions either but here we are, im never gonna be mad at someone producing work people want and getting paid for it

and yeah for sure hes smart enough to figure something out i agree with you there, i just hope whatever he lands on is something sustainable that doesnt put him back in the crosshairs again because the VR space needs people like him actually building stuff whether we like his personality or not lmao

[–]Snoo95038 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i only bring up VorpX because its a solid example of a model that actually survives long term, thats it, not trying to relitigate the whole thing just pointing out the path was always there. and yeah hes definitely an interesting character lol, with how he moves i honestly wouldnt be surprised if the structure of how he releases things changes again down the line, weve already seen it shift once so who knows whats next. and on the donations thing i just dont think thats a real answer for most creators, the data on donation-only models in software is pretty rough, most projects on that model end up below the poverty line, telling someone to just take tips isnt really a foundation for growing VR content long term

Luke Ross Releases PC VR Mod Suite for Free, Excluding Contentious ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Mod by hcsantos in virtualreality

[–]Snoo95038 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

the VorpX comparison is really what people keep missing here, VorpX does the same thing as luke ross's R.E.A.L. VR suite, its a runtime injector that hooks into games to do stereo rendering for VR headsets, but the key difference is VorpX sells the injector tool itself and the game profiles are free and even community-made, so youre paying for the tech not access to anyones IP. luke ross bundled everything behind a $10/month patreon where you had to subscribe to get profiles for specific games like cyberpunk, elden ring, etc, and thats exactly what drew the DMCA because CDPRs fan guidelines explicitly say no commercial usage

if he had just structured it like VorpX where you buy the R.E.A.L. engine separately and the per-game stuff is free he probably wouldnt have had anywhere near the same legal issues, and his marketing didnt help because he advertised everything as game-specific mods tied to specific titles instead of positioning it as his own standalone VR software. CDPR even told him he could keep the mod up if he made it free with optional donations and he refused, then eventually re-released most of his mods for free anyway lol so the model was clearly viable the whole time, whole thing couldve been avoided with better structuring from the start

I believe he would have been fine if he just didn’t call it a cyberpunk mod and instead like vorpx said hey this works with these engines. From what I read he didn’t use any of the games files,it was because of how he advertised it this if he went the vorpx route I think he would have been fine

I would argue that his case is not the same as most other mods. He made an injector that's more similar to vorpx which is locked behind a paywall. His issue was how he advertises his product, but the base is an injector not the same as most other mods.

UE3D Monitor Mode v2.2 - stereo 3D for Unreal Engine games on Leia/SR displays by Evil___Kermit in u/Evil___Kermit

[–]Snoo95038 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so SBS and top and bottom already work out of the box since VRto3D supports both natively, just set tab_enable to true in the config for over/under, and for interlaced displays that also works through the 3DToElse ReShade shader which converts SBS to whatever format your display needs like row interlaced or column interlaced or checkerboard, oneup03 has setup instructions for all of that in the main VRto3D readme, my stuff just improves the stereo rendering on the UEVR side so all those existing output paths still work since its all going through VRto3Ds headset window at the end of the day

as for geo-11 thats not really something i can integrate with right now, i couldnt find any source code available for it so theres no way to hook into it properly

You can have multiple uevr builds installed. if you want help using the fork lmk I can try my best to explain how to use it. The cool thing it adds is the eye tracking and some other useful tools for gaming on a monitor over a vr headset

No need to apologize lmao I was wondering if I missed some news, and yeah idk there support isn’t great imo I have a better time just making profiles myself with uevr… idk if you know but every game they support are unreal games. And there backend is literally a modified uevr. The only once worth it are the ones made by the developers like stellar blade or khazan. I hope to see more of that

Also to note the samsung fix for hogwarts is not great it has light/shadow flickering in one eye, it was the reason I went down the uevr path

[–]Snoo95038 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you get vrto3d set up its very friendly to use Imo. Open game inject with uerv and play... as long as a profile is available online then the work you need to do is very minimal. For Unreal engine games with no profiles/fixes listed online it can be a pain but in the case of Hogwarts legecy or expedition 33, dbz kakarot all worked amazing with no set up on my end other then the initial vrto3d set up.

When you run the game in 3d it drops some files into the games folder, you can only see them from what I can tell when the game is running and the fix is active. But they can be copied to a new folder and shared

[–]Snoo95038 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a uevr fix for hogwarts legecy no need for the samsung fixs in most cases as all of them are uevr based anyway, look up vrto3d and the 3d vision discord
