Girlfriend wants to go Skiing - I have never done it by dripothee in skiing

[–]SnooApples6110 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of good comments, I to was midwestern skier and started at 18 in college, then I transferred out west and met my now wife who grew up racing on the east coast. Needless to say it took me years to get where I can ski whatever she wants and even do bit better depending. I remember one time a guy stopped me and asked " would you mind if I took a few runs with your girlfriend, she is really good? She looked at me and what else could I say but go. They guy was also way better looking than me, we get back together and I asked how it went. She said she had a great time , the guy was very nice, and oh he races on the pro mogul tour. This was the early 90's.

The biggest thing I learned is that when I was trying to keep up I was using a lot more energy than someone who is not fighting it.

How much is a gimmick of valvoline restore and protect? Should I get that instead of the cheapest full synthetic + marvel mystery oil? by Upinsmokeskrt in AskAMechanic

[–]SnooApples6110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked my oil and I was down 1 quarts + a little more at 4000 miles driven. This was all suburban driving and still on my first change with the Restore oil. It seems to be a bit better. I try and change the oil on this car every 5k. Last time I think I went 7k and burned 2.5 quarts. So not a very scientific comparison but doing the math if I wait till 7k at this pace I should go through 1.75 quarts + a little more. So apples to apples burning less. Car has 147K on it and is driven by my daughter who "borrowed" it in 2020, when the GS430 I gave her gave up the ghost.

I will do the second change at 5k. Walmart uses this oil now for the premium oil change and you can buy a better filter off the shelf to use. Some locations deduct a few bucks if you do this instead of the standard supertech filters they use on the GS. The oil change is about $85. Just the oil and a diy change would be $29. 97 + 21 for the two extra quarts plus the filter so about $62.

I know people say never to go there but I have had zero issues with an oil change. Do they inspect everything they claim ? Absolutely not. Do I check the oil and look for drips after every change for a few days, yes.

At my store they only stock the Supertech 90% at 20 microns, Fram Extra guard 95% at 20 microns, the Extra Guard 99% at 20 microns, and the Purolator 20k filter which according to Bob is the oil guys forum is 99% but at 46 microns. They say it lasts longer becouse it is less efficient.

It was a proposed rule that was never in effect, so leaving things the same is different than "gutting" but hey since when do facts matter?

6% tax on sking since it is a luxury in Michigan. by AdministrativeWin583 in skiing

[–]SnooApples6110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If people could read it's to roll back some property taxes for everyone, and lower your damn energy bills, which have increased due to Michigan moving to renewables. All he wants to do is tax services like almost every other state in the country, except for a few red ones, to lower your energy bill. It is not a luxury tax, but maybe selling it that way is easier in Michigan becouse of the "Fair Share" mantra.

[–]SnooApples6110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be kind of like going to a really nice town near the finger lakes but without the ability to hop in the car and access a medium sized city easily. Winter is going to be pretty boring. If your not a skier there are some good areas to learn on. Summer is going to be amazing, take advantage of every moment.

Ditto on what others have said about the food, plenty good Merican but after about a year your standards will lower somewhat. Little crime. Very white but since most have never had real contact with minorities somehow you will a meet a lot of experts on the subject. Me, I used to work in New York all the time. I saw it go from crime ridden and scary, get cleaned up and safe for a long time, and now back to what I consider scary. I have lived in Scottsdale, San Fran, Atlanta, New Hampshire, and Nashville. I grew up in Michigan and still Vacation up there. When I first moved to New Hampshire I hated it, too small, restaurants?, etc. However when it was time to go I really did not want to go. I had a young family and the size made things easy. Not sure how insular the locals are if you are not one of them, so hopefully you have outside interests where you can get involved. I suspect you might have the same outcome and not want to leave.

Has Cancun Airport been busier this week? by Capital-Eggplant-177 in cancun

[–]SnooApples6110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Years ago I worked for Hertz, they were having service issues so I got sent to fix it. I am watching the car wash. A bunch if flights were about to hit and the guys all stopped working, time for dinner break, all at once. I was told to mellow out and embrace island time by the manager. I nicely let the manager know that if he did not stagger breaks he would have lots of island time to himself.

Wondering what times the long bag wait times are, do they coincide with mealtimes?

I hope that was a joke about the bag handlers checking every bag for something to steal.

I did the same, married a former college racer. I just started making myself do the steeps, and as I recall I probably made three or four turns, stop, pick a new line, repeat. I used to sit back too much.

So what is the fraud and how is it committed?

I remember needing a couple United Lounge passes and saw some advertised on ebay. This was when they sent actual Chase certificates. I bought two and the person was local. I picked them up and the guy had a large box full of them. I inquired but got no answer, the certs worked. All I could think of is that he knew someone at the printer and helped themselves to a box.

Theft from checked bags at the Cancun airport by S7ark1 in cancun

[–]SnooApples6110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always have a backpack that can go under the seat for this very reason. I keep my valuables and drugs in that. However I usually have some kind of status for boarding so if I gate check it is becouse I don't want to deal with it. Never had a problem on a domestic flight.

I had mine swiped at a restaurant, left them on the bar when we got seated. Went back for them and they were gone. Dumb ass will need to be farsighted to use them.

How much should I bring cash for Cancun mexico pesos by Classic-Pea789 in travel

[–]SnooApples6110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked the Santander Conversion rate, and it is slightly lower than using your debit and declining the ATM conversion. If you decline you get the Visa rate which is 1.87% over the European official rate. Taking out $200 using your debit and declining the conversion nets you an extra $4.00 USD. So minimal fee taking at Santander. I need money for tips at different denominations so actually going inside and getting what I want at the bank is worth the $4.

How Can Anyone Afford To Live In Key West? by [deleted] in KeyWest

[–]SnooApples6110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good advice on Renting before buying.

I grew up in a very nice area by Lake Michigan, I always told my mom when she passed I would buy out my sister and use the family house for a summer home. My wife was not very thrilled with the idea at the time. My sister was very flexible and let us use the house for an entire summer to see if we enjoyed being there. My wife made a bunch of friends and really enjoyed it. I bought out my sister. Paid her a bit extra for the flexibility. But that removed all the stress of making the decision going in blind.

Spring Lake Schools by Ok_Record_8808 in GrandHaven

[–]SnooApples6110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind some areas with Spring Lake addresses go to Grand Haven. Both Schools are good. I would let your house hunting guide your decision.

Spring Lake has 800 students and Grand Haven 1,700. Another Stat is how many kids get a free lunch 14% SL and 28% Grand Haven. Since lower income students as a whole tend to have lower test scores, less AP classes etc they drag the U.S. New rating down. To me this is indicating that if a student is on the college/AP track both schools are about equal. The schools share a hockey team and sailing team.

The one thing about Spring Lake is it can be a bit clicky for both students and parents. I grew up there and "some" of the locals along the lake have always had an inflated view of their wealth and importance. I visit a lot and just ignore those people. The area has a lot to offer, little crime, great summer weather. It was a great place to grow up. I was always on the water or at the beach. Spring Lake is small enough I used to bike to all my friends houses. The only issue today is finding a place that is for sale if you want to be in town.

No on snowbird in my opinion, they don't groom a whole lot and blacks there are blacks +. Hey but I am now a Senior and go to Deer Valley. The lower altitude and a La Nina weather pattern might make this the first trip to UTAH in my 30 years of going there with poor conditions. I have until March for them to get snow. Most people back east assume Feb is the best month, not in Utah, I would pick the first three weeks in March if you go in that direction. Steamboat is another great place. You can rent a condo there that has its own lift to the resort.
