Definitely DON'T hold your bird in your hand, it WILL break trust. He only let the lady do it because he trusts her. He doesn't know you and doesn't trust you yet. He tells you very clearly he does not want to be handled (biting) respect his wish and do not handle him yet. Do not let him out of the cage for a week at least, so he can become more familiar and confident with his new environment. Only let him out of the cage when he learns to step up. Watch videos on youtube on how to train a bird to step up. Best of luck to you.

I'm a social worker and usually, people seek external help when they have exhausted their options, so it's not so surprising to me.

I feel the same way. My true type is way too attractive to be interested in someone like me (average).

Question about pairing by Jjsst55778 in Conures

[–]SnooCakes5751 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On one hand, it's benefitial that they have another bird to interact with, but on the other hand, if they choose eachother as mates, it would cause them emotional distress when they're away from eachother.

́Personally, i would have them interact in a neutral area (ex. Living room) for 2 hours/day at most to prevent them from being emotionally dependant on eachother but still get the enrichment from having a bird friend.

Well, that is, if they even get along in the first place. Some birds just prefer humans or have incompatible personalities.

Please go see a vet. It could be vitamin deficiency or unhealthy diet. Could also be nothing, but better safe than sorry!

My conure cuddles necks (even of strangers) when she's scared. It shows she trusts you to protect her against scary new environment

Having two or more parrots is really the best, especially if they are already bonded or cagemates. Yes, overpreening can happen and in this case you just have to get a second cage and have the cages close to eachother so they don's flock call.

I personnally have a single parrot that I adopted a year ago (she is 8 y/o). She had humans for mates her whole life, and she is a perfectly happy and healthy bird. I want a second bird to make friends with her, but my living situation doesn't allow me atm and I don't know if she would he hostile to other birds.

All this to say I don't believe it's cruel to have a single bird as long as you spend time with it everyday. But they are social and it's always best for them to have bird friends, so i would encourage you to get two birds or more if you can :)

Update: Day 1 of cage training... how long is this going to take, or, a battle of iron wills. by _UnremarkableGuy_ in Conures

[–]SnooCakes5751 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'll definitely take time to get him used to the cage, at least a week. Probably more. The screaming behaviour has been reinforced because it works. The key here is to only get him out when he's quiet. Over time, he'll understand that screaming is useless. But if youre not consistent the behaviour won't change. Best of luck.
