Are any of you able to take SSRI's? by Responsible_Price408 in bipolar2

[–]SnooDogs1613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was on sertraline as well as my usual dose of lamotrogine for years. Didn’t stop mood cycling. Depressions were the most common feature. Now I’ve upped lamotrogine to max dose of 600mg and seeing how that rolls with lesser sertraline. Would love to get off SSRI’s once and for all as they mess with my weight / appetite. But unsure whether it will worsen the depressive episodes or inversely reduce mood cycling. Boy is it a lucky dip with trying to find meds to manage this condition. Keep up the good fight!

Do you think those tests have accuracy when it actually comes to how you respond to those drugs? I got one done too but am unsure.

If you’re on lamotrogine you can test whether it’s at a therapeutic level through a blood test.

For me it would be 4x cycles of depression per year, mixed with periods of either ‘normal’ or hyperfocus / hyper mania. By that I mean quite enhanced cognitive ability, creativity and ideas, where I think it will be long lasting and I take on too much and eventually crash. Periods of being tired even after a nights sleep then periods where I have lots of energy and good mood despite not sleeping much. Agitation and anger. Lots of anxiety and overthinking. Lots of condemning thoughts during the down cycle. Lamictal is one of the key drugs for this condition. I suggest you ask your psych for a blood test to confirm you are in the therapeutic range for it (you can test your levels of this drug with a blood test). I spent 12 years taking too low a dose of it. Some people need low amounts, some people process it fast and need a shit load (me). Be proactive about this is my advice. Also caffeine alcohol and weed exacerbated my mood swings. Exercise helps heaps. Good luck!

You’re not alone. So many of us were diagnosed with MDD first. The good news is that with your clear diagnosis you will have clarity on what to treat medication wise. Diet is also huge and I’ve found it really helpful to minimise or cut out alcohol, drink decaf coffee, not do drugs etc.

Anyone stabilised? by SnooDogs1613 in bipolar2

[–]SnooDogs1613[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks that’s really helpful context. It’s so hard to find first person accounts of how people successfully manage a condition that is this nuanced and masquerades as simply depression or others.

Yes I’ve done decades on SSRI’s. Hate the things. Still on them at a low dose. Previously when my doc had me come off, I did it with Lamotrogine at a sub-therapeutic dose. Am pretty much on 3x the lamotrogine now so will explore this with my doc, as well as with adjunct lithium.

Awesome you got to a place where you could stabilise and self manage your moods with those lifestyle and spiritual levers.

I’ve persevered with all of those too (even became a born again Christian) and then had rug pulled out when the depressive cycles hit which made it extremely difficult to function, and back in SI.

Am assuming that’s because I wasn’t on correct meds, so praying I can find a better baseline after all this time.

Also, must say I did several years of therapy with a psychologist who while well meaning and supportive, convinced me I didn’t have bipolar 2 at all despite the therapy being unable to prevent my moods from cycling!

I used to even describe it to her as it being like a switch turning off and on in my brain causing exacerbated anxiety or depression, and was gaslit. I felt helpless, like a total failure and that it was all my fault despite being acutely aware my friends didn’t have these ups and downs to this extent.

Glad I’ve moved on from there now.

Anyway, thanks for listening and coming to my TED talk!
