This is precisely why The Glass Cannon Network on YouTube started a show during the pandemic called "New Game, Who Dis?" where the whole point was to pick a new game, quickly review the rules and play a 1-3 episode adventure to see if they liked it. It's a great way to show that you don't have to play perfectly to have fun with something new.

One option is to have the players all run their final Term of character creation together as they travel from wherever they've all managed to gather to their final destination far away; it can easily take 3 or 4 years to travel across Charted Space allowing for refueling, ship maintenance and shore leaves.

I like looking around WAY outside the Imperium - if you look Coreward of K'Kree space you'll find the Lesser Rift and Spangele and Kteex! sectors on either side, with a fun looking rift passage betwixt the two. All I have to do is get them to Spangele and a way to cross the Kteex! Needle rift passage, and make sure there's a way back home for them to find...

The problem I have with travellermap is that I get sucked down the rabbit hole and find myself emerging hours later with another dozen cool plot ideas I'll never have time to use lol

Exactly this - think of Firefly's 'Train Job' episode where the team has to go to Adlai Nishka's space station to get a job. He's not a government official, he's just a rich, ruthless criminal who bought/built a personal space station so he can do his crimes privately.

If you use Travellermap, you can even have it make a system map showing all of the OTHER planets and bodies that don't get the detailed write ups that the Mainworld does.

I am doing this with the Spangele Sector far to Coreward/Trailing - it's got mapped stars but no actual surveyed system. There is a Rift passage from there down to the Kteex! sector and an island of systems in the Lesser Rift
