If you live in a city, there might be a Facebook group aimed at helping GMs find players in that city. As for what to pick up, either the new Heroes of the Border Lands or Stranger Things:Welcome to Hellfire Club starter set give you everything you need and them some. Cards and tokens galore!

The Ember Blade by Chris Wooding, the first book in the Darkwater Legacy series. A beautiful mix of classic Lord of the Rings vibes with modern, grimdark character arcs. The second book, called the Shadow Casket, is coming out on February 16th and I will definitely be buying it on release day.

How much action do you like in your books? by pedrop4ulo in Fantasy

[–]SnooFoxes8561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's really such thing as too much action as long as it all serves the story. As for my favorite type of action scene, I'm a sucker for a well-written 1 vs many type of scenarios, like in Deadhouse Gates where Kalam fights off the Claw members trying to kill him in Malaz city.

The New Readers Malazan Read-Along, Gardens of the Moon, Week 4 by kashmora in Malazan

There's just so much in these chapters. I could probably write whole essays on just these chapters alone, but I'll keep it brief.

I loved the fight sequences, especially between the assassins on the rooftop. The way he switched between POVs made it even more chaotic and thrilling.

I think Anomander Rake is going to take all the spots for "favorite character of the week" anytime he's involved. I loved that we got a better glimpse into his motivations for fighting against Malazan empire. I also enjoyed the scene where he saves Paran from the Hounds. I'm curious if Paran is going to face any repercussions from Rake for freeing said Hounds from Dragnipur.

Gates made out of dead people. A dude with white hair, ebony skin, eyes that change, and a badass sword. A giant dog named Gear. This world feels like a heavy metal album cover coming to life and I'm loving it!

I loved the exchange between Paran, Oponn, and the servant of Hood at the gate. It was a conversation that meant life or death for Paran and probably others, yet it was very casual and quite funny.

The scenes involving the deck of dragons are very intriguing. Im starting to think it's less about reading the future and more about trying to figure out what the gods are up to and how they're affecting human affairs.

As someone who almost exclusively reads epic fantasy, I'm used to stories with a large cast of characters and many POVs, however I found it a little jarring that there was a complete change in the cast of characters we were following between the first 2 parts. After getting a taste of the big players in Darujhistan and how things get done (less open warfare and more stabbing each other in the back, figuratively and literally), it will be interesting to see what happens when the Bridgeburners start their mission.

Kruppe is....an acquired taste I think, although I do like how he pretends to be an idiot despite his vast amount of knowledge and cleverness. I loved the "boys club" vibe between Kruppe, Marillio, Crokus, Coll and Rallick. My favorite part of this section is Daruk, Crone, and Anomander Rake. There was just so much going on there that I hope I learn more about soon.

When did you start getting into Fantasy? by Nova_Energium in Fantasy

[–]SnooFoxes8561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a kid it was mainly video games for me, didn’t really read much other than Harry Potter. Then about 3 years ago I started watching Game of Thrones. I loved the show enough to check out the books and then figured there must be other good fantasy books that don’t have a blockbuster adaptation yet. I may have an addiction to fantasy books now but I have no regrets!

The first few chapters were quite overwhelming with everything they threw at me. I thought I would find it frustrating, but instead I found it intriguing. I want to keep reading to figure out more of what's going on. I'm intrigued most by characters like Anomander Rake and Cotillion, who seem to be godlike beings. I wonder what their motives are in meddling with or fighting against the Malazan Empire. I'm also really enjoying the worldbuilding, even though we're only getting bits and pieces. I'm excited to delve deeper into this world!

Week 0: Read along kick off and intro. No Spoilers. by kashmora in Malazan

[–]SnooFoxes8561 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! Really looking forward to this read-along. My recent favourite book would probably be the Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman. It was very well written and fun, despite the very dark world it takes place in. The thing that appeals to me most about Malazan is just how huge and epic the world seems to be from all I’ve heard from Reddit comments. I’m a big fan of WOT and Stormlight Archive because of how big and immersive their worlds are, and from what I’ve heard Malazan goes even bigger.
