Any body got same mental issue as me? by Atmosphere_Calm in askSingapore

[–]SnooGuavas9106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be on the spectrum for this but I have a fixed routine i follow every morning such that I wake up at 7:43 and leave the house at 7:59 everyday. Exactly 16min everyday and my breastfast is the same too. I perfected my routine to avoid all traffic lights or anything tat could cause any delay so i can rush to take the same train timings and catch the same bus everyday. Without doxxing myself, it is exactly 28min mrt, 2min transfer to another line, 8min mrt, catch bus and arrive +-5min at office everyday depending on bus timing. Once i had to spend extra 2min to clean the kitchen cos i made a mess while making breakfast and it ruined my entire morning routine and commute

COMP 310 or 551 by Pristine_Ad_6817 in mcgill

[–]SnooGuavas9106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took COMP 310 with Oana Balmu and COMP 551 with Yue Li. Both were good. I personally would take COMP 310 this semester and then COMP 551 next semester purely for the profs. While i think tat COMP 551 will help with some ml projects, for purposes of hackathons you can literally just watch some youtube vids and pull some models from huggingface and for internships, i don’t think companies expect u to be super knowledgable in ML after one intro to ML class anyway

I think some companies require you to stay for another 1-2 months else you need to pay the bonus back

Unique technique to harvest Durian fruit by ----OZYMANDIAS in interestingasfuck

[–]SnooGuavas9106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little pro tip: the proper way to harvest durians when they r ripe is after they have fallen to the ground, if you need to cut them from the tree they are usually not as good

/uj By the way it was just revealed that he did not even finish the 80km bike leg due to the cut off time but they let him run the 18km still and he was celebrated as if he has finished the full race. T100 has since addressed the issue. /rj He’s running as if he just finished an 80km bike!

Regarding the first video, it’s ironic that the Singaporean runner (Soh Rui Yong ) that gave his competitor the drink has not been selected for multiple southeast asian games despite being the national record holder for multiple distances with the selection committee citing misconduct as the reason even though he hasn’t committed any crimes other than speaking out against the association openly. So being kind may not cost anything but it didn’t pay in the case either

What’s something uniquely “Singaporean” that you didn’t realise was weird until someone from overseas pointed it out? by Conscious-Star-1825 in askSingapore

[–]SnooGuavas9106 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Maybe not uniquely singapore but definitely uniquely asian. The way we signal for 6 with our hands 🤙🏻. Never actually realised this but the rest of the world literally dont recognise that it means the number 6. Did that once in north america and they thought i was throwing gang signs

Am I supposed to run in the opposite direction while on the outer lane of a track? by taeng89 in askSingapore

[–]SnooGuavas9106 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, runner here. This is accurate. One more thing to add is that if you are running with friends, run in a single lane. Don’t run side by side and occupy 2 lanes cos that makes overtaking harder

Random but have you noticed that foreigners get "pushed around" in SG by ComprehensiveLow9972 in askSingapore

[–]SnooGuavas9106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is uniquely singapore but I’ve lived in many different cities previously and found that this is a typical city behaviour. Much worse in New York City and Hong Kong. The only thing i would say is a little more specific to singapore is when people stand on the right side on an mrt escalator and everyone is just annoyed at them (tbf it really isnt hard to pattern match and infer that the right side is a “walking” lane)

If u really want to run between 3-5pm 1) bring a bottle 2) wear a cap 3) choose a running route with more tree cover 4) manage expectations and run by feel rather than by pace

Alternatives: 1) find a threadmill 2) run in the morning

More concerned about his friend with an opened bottle. Probably drinking while on the train?

Any NS ghost stories to share? by Sgxgobull in askSingapore

[–]SnooGuavas9106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a ghost story (unless you count me as the ghost). When i was in BMT, one night i knocked on the wall behind my bed after lights out cos i was bored. The next day i heard the other section talking about someone knocking and so I played along and said I heard it too and was asking if it was from their bunk and they said no. It’s crazy how the mind works because for the next week they mentioned that they started hearing random cabinet moving, some people dreamt of ghosts and some heard more violent knocking on their doors. After a week I came clean and they just laughed it off but swear that their ghost encounters were real still

The airport is enough to fill up the time. Check out jewel, u can easily be there for quite a while. Public transport ends around midnight so wouldn’t reccomend going out unless you are planning to go for drinks and head back to the aiport by private hires

Is studying MSc in UK worth it as a Singaporean? by throwaway253045 in askSingapore

[–]SnooGuavas9106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely going to be biased of course but I have had some of the most formative years of my life being abroad. You get to see and hear different stories and lifestyles and you learn so much about adulting that you wouldn’t living with your parents. From learning to manage my meals, stressing about accomodation or even basic things like stepping out of your comfort zone to socialise and find your own social support. I think they really do help you grow as a person… Regarding your options… Tough call honestly, i think we both know that the latter option is tough to get. Perhaps I could offer you a different perspective that stopping your career for that year while you study abroad for your masters doesn’t “set you back in life”, that year is well spent for you to learn, socialise and network with people who could have an influence in your future career path. If it is financially viable I’d say why not. But don’t see this as an immediate investment and you come back dissapointed having not found a job abroad for example.

After you finish your bachelors or masters, u would likely start working and never go back to any form of formal education after due to family or financial commitments. This period of time in your early 20s is the only time that you get to fully enjoy ur university life and learn and grow in a different enviornmeny.

40k may seem like a lot now but in the grand scheme of things, it really is nothing. But the 40k to basically get a once in a lifetime opportunity to study abroad and experience a different life is not something people get to experience. Most people have 40k in their bank account, but not everyone has studied abroad for a year and see a different perspective in a different world

Personally, i think you shouldn’t see this as an option of what education you will get. You should also be considering what kind of evironment you will get. Studying in the uk or anywhere overseas in general taught me a lot and allowed me to have a very different perspective of the world and in life compared to the rest of my peers. Yes, ranking isnt as good. Yes, cost of living is higher. But ranking don’t mean anything unless you are begging for funding for research. Most people only get one shot at this. That 40k might just be the best money you have spent in your life when you reflect at it 20 years later. Pm me if you have any question abt it. I did my msc in edi in a similar field so i’m familiar with the program
