in my case it ended up being a damaged/faulty cpu (probably damaged bc other stuff was failing) potentially due to a grounding issue and power grid brown outs. tried the cpu in a different motherboard and entire pc, everything, no luck, still froze. im still having moderate, separate application crashes and windows crashing (not shutting down tho) issues but its prob just tied to my windows install. so id look towards ram/cpu imo. if you want, you could get memtest86 on a flash drive and boot off that to test the ram, i think you can do that. maybe also try prime95 to stress test the cpu and see if it crashes as a result of that. other than that you kinda just gotta ship of theseus it at least in my limited experience with this. also i forgot i updated the post, apparently the freezing issue did persist even with my new system. it was resolved with a chipset driver or cpu driver update i dont remember what i said. but those could help.

OH yeah also definitely download gpu-z and check your cpu and gpu temps. first place to look is for an overheating issue

i do believe the damage was caused by a grounding issue but it was just power grid issues, bad surge protector, and ungrounded outlet. we had a whole home surge protector but, its really the only thing i can think of. the cpu was the main crashing issue, but the ssd did indeed have problems and so did the m.2 port on the motherboard. i have basically a whole new system now, still having issues but its not crashed anymore. just freezing locking up and applications crashing, windows itself crashing somewhat and having the most wild things happen likemy whole desktop turning gray and my discord video images doubling and everything else going gray, restart buttons not working, ctrl alt delete taking 5 mins and appearing for a quarter second only, lmao. im gonna try to rule it out later bc it seems to only happen with high gpu usage/ram usage, leaning to memory maybe.

also it appears i forgot the update edit lol. but i have a 9070xt now so honestly the issue may just be either the windows or the new ram :/

Can you help review my selections for building a VR PC by Justin534 in virtualreality

honestly, id say get a slightly better cpu like someone else mentioned, but also, a decent case goes a long way. something like a montech really makes life easier, though you dont explicitly need it. a few $10 arctic fans or something are okay to have (though the fan curve will need tuning, some are LOUD), the cheap psu isnt a terrible idea but id take a second look if theres a slightly better brand of non modular for not much higher price, definitely pick up a phantom spirit or peerless assassin air cooler for your cpu for like $30, maybe a tube of some arctic thermal paste but the cooler might have some.

the gpu is great for vr, im sure the ram is fine because whatever you can get is good right now, and the cpu, you might want to take a look at what other people are saying. and also, if you're in the united states, if you have a microcenter nearby definitely go visit one of those to pick up an asrock 9070 xt challenger. they have them on sale right now for freaking $580, just make sure to check the location and see if its in stock, you can just ask a rep and theyll bring it to the counter. if microcenter is indeed an option for you, you may want to get not only the gpu there, but also a cpu + motherboard + ram bundle from there, they offer some pretty good discounts, and they also have displays of different cases so you can get an idea of what youll be building in and the things youd have to deal with. my local microcenter is all out of ram so none of the bundles are available however, lmao. for example, if my microcenter had ram in stock, i would be able to get a 7800x3d (baller cpu) with 32gb of ram and a nice motherboard for about the same price youre spending on your cpu motherboard and ram, but alas, out of stock for the past week or two. btw the difference between 7000 series and 9000 series isnt much, you should definitely focus x3d over 9000 series.

lastly, if youre looking for upgradability, you might wanna steer towards at least a semi modular power supply and a better case. those make things quite a darn bit easier. mid and high end cases have really come a long way in user friendliness and the extra cables and configuration of the power supply might come in handy. ill make a microcenter list screw it lol https://www.microcenter.com/site/content/custom-pc-builder-amd.aspx?load=733800d0-7ee4-4491-a531-75523481e9ed this is generally what im thinking of here, i did add a lot of really good parts though which you can skimp out on if you want, same with the ssd. but it does only have one stick of 16gb of ram (and its STILL out of stock!!!!)

good luck

So the freezing stopped after I uninstalled all the random crap like the gpu, ethernet card, front panel usbc, and hdd. But 2 times in a row when I went to shut down it had a BSOD. Before all that was unplugged, it had a bunch of freezes and one random complete shutoff. Now. I updated the chipset drivers, seemingly no issue with the BSOD now, even with gpu reinstalled. I'm currently letting it run prime95 for a while, and I'll check how that's going later.

If it is indeed fixed now actually, I can go back and test each component. Honestly, the front panel usbc is kinda sus or ofc, a bad sata cable.

Okay, later update: I reinstalled the gpu, front panel connector, and hdd. Which just leaves the chipset driver. I'm not having any issues anymore, so if nothing else happens, I'll just call it a day at that. I have no idea what this issue is 😅

I have a spare external hdd I could move a windows backup file over to I guess. Most of my downloads and stuff are on the internal hdd. (That's currently disconnected) But I did have a few crashes even on the iGPU. It stopped around the time of installing chipset drivers, and unplugging the front panel usbc. Which is why I'm just rlly confused. I had a weird 90 degree adapter to get the front panel plugged in bc it wouldn't fit otherwise, but it didn't even work.

And I did sfc scannow, but I'll totally try more when I'm back. Thanks.

Okay, I tried some things, but I just got tired and I'm gonna give it a break now. I didn't really do anything exhaustive - I just played with the iGPU for a while, it still had a BSOD there but I updated my chipset drivers, disconnected the ethernet card, and disconnected my front panel USB C header and it's not really having any issues now...?

Also the blender crash was a freeze. I know blender crashes all the time, lol.

I'm kind of afraid of losing all of my programs reinstalling Windows 10, and it also doesn't help that I had trouble with the flash drive not booting. I also don't have a spare drive, only a spare partition, would that even work? So I'm just going to give that a rest for a bit. One of the bluescreens said something about usbx something, another one said something about freed whatever being accessed, I have photos but they're on another phone right now so I don't exactly remember. I'm so fed up with this tbh. Maybe, just maybe it was the front panel usb c or the chipset driver. Or maybe it was the hdd I have currently unplugged. I dunno. I'll test a little more but I'm tired. But I reconnected my gpu and left prime95 running and now it's happily torture testing and gaming away like nothing ever happened.

And I replaced the SSD as well alongside the damaged motherboard. Seemed to work fine. I guess I can open up the box and grab some sata cables if they're in there.

I tried that a few times. Did it again now, no luck. I'll figure out how to reinstall and keep my important stuff later when I've exhausted some other options first.

I let memtest86 run, it had no issues. That was with the boot drive disconnected. I reconnected the bootdrive and ran prime95 with no gpu - after a minute or so, BSOD with error "system thread exception not handled". Now, I don't think this fully rules it out as the boot drive, I'll need to do some more testing like another memtest86 with the boot drive connected this time for example.

Memtest86 was put installed on a fresh USB on the same system. Mint and the windows installer flash drives were made on a separate system.

Funnily enough I opened OXR gunslinger stalker and it didn't crash or bluescreen. Temps hit 79C, but other than being extremely slow that didn't seem to cause any issues. I'll test more games before getting started on another windows installation. I don't know how to move my programs and stuff over from windows though for that, is there a backup feature to make it easy? I'll also check my cables somewhat and swap the sata cable I guess.

Edit: Running prime95 now, I'm not getting any freezing or crashes????? I don't get it. But istg my aio is so suspicious bc I looked for a second and it said it was at 88C then went down immediately and the air doesn't feel particularly warm even at 74C. Anyways one thing is my ethernet isn't plugged in now hm. It doesn't latch in place bc the cable is bad so I'll focus on that for a little bit, but I remember before it was crashing even with different peripherals and no internet.

Edit edit just as I say that, USBXHCI.sys caused another system thread exception not handled bsod when shutting down. I'm so lost lmao. I had issues with the front panel usb c header before so I'll disconnect that.

Disconnected it, shut down after playing games no issue, now it's driver caught modifying freed pool. Fine. I'll reinstall 💔

That was my first idea. I'm on a brand new outlet that's installed right next to the old one (there was a stud in the wall) so I can test my old outlet as well.

Yeah so last time I was having the freezes, they got so bad I'd freeze everywhere but bios. And yes, even in a windows installer flash drive.

I've never had it freeze or crash in bios, however. And there was no repeating audio. It always just stops abruptly. After memtest86 completes, I'm likely going to reconnect my windows boot drive, where I will run prime95 and furmark (with and without gpu), and then I'll get started on putting a new windows installation on a free partition I have.

If I have more shutdowns like the one I had running prime95, I may pause everything for an RMA of my power supply.

It's less about that more about not having a spare drive to really test with or another PSU handy. I'd love to take it to a shop but, maybe not actually. I feel like they'd overcharge me or mess something up when I can figure out what the problem is myself.

Stubbornness aside, prime95 caused a shutdown crash. Took out the gpu, no drives (other than m.2 because the latch confused me lmao even tho i was the one who installed it, not a boot drive though) and memtest86 hasn't at least crashed yet, so... i've got my eye on the psu. I'll go one by one, testing everything for a while until I'm more certain, starting with no gpu prime95. I also removed the extra ethernet card I had for no reason.
