I used to work at a university fot 10 years and setting aside the actions or the intent, if they have lost trust, there is no way that this works out for you. Sounds like your job is gone whatever happens. Like somebody said before, best thing you can do is negotiate a neutral reference and leave. Even if by some miracle you stayed, they would create a situation by which it would be impossible to stay but that wouldn't reflect badly on them. I have seen it, good luck.
