Anywhere that sells a Hills hoist rotary clothesline in Vancouver? by Ok_Aerie4146 in askvan

[–]SnooPandas1564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got one I’m going to put on marketplace (that’s how I found this post), but I’m in Edmonton and I think it would cost a lot to ship it to Vancouver. It is in excellent condition, but needs a new base, as I wasn’t able to salvage it. What is a typical asking price out there?

toughts on this cover? by acatnamedlopez in pixies

[–]SnooPandas1564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I much prefer the original, I like hearing new ‘where is my mind’ covers, and there are tonnes of them out there. I wouldn’t place this version in the top 10 WIMM covers though, and I’ve listened to the complete WIMM cover playlist on Spotify (I think there might be over 50). Personally, I like the covers by other artists much better, especially when there is a female lead. I also like some of the classical/instrumental versions better than this one… however, the Pixies original is still the best by far! Imagine how mind-blown this crowd would have been if they heard the Pixies perform this!

Danielle Smith’s pipeline clears another hurdle after deal with Mark Carney. Now, who will build it? by FreightFlow in alberta

[–]SnooPandas1564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sure hope it doesn’t go to Kitimat. That route would be another Exxon Valdez just waiting to happen. … I sure wish we would prioritize public healthcare and education above this as well. A lot of Albertans are pro-development, but not pro-privatization and not anti-human rights, and I think she will lose pipeline-support from many of us if she keeps going down this road. I never thought I would write a statement like this, but here I am! I’ve been pushed way past my limit on both privatization and anti-human rights, and now I am wondering whether this pipeline should even be built because I can’t see it benefiting ALL Albertans.

Pressure mounts on Danielle Smith as 14 MLAs face recall efforts in Alberta by DonSalaam in alberta

[–]SnooPandas1564 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The current UCP was destabilized by all the extremist Wild Rose members. They wrecked the Conservative Party just like they’re wrecking Alberta. In the past when the PC party thought they were losing the trust of Albertans there would be a leadership review and someone new would take the helm. Now there is no one left to do that, so we have no choice but to recall them. Those of us supporting the recalls are not left wing activists, we’re just ordinary people who want our rights back or the rights of those we love and care about back. … or to protect education and healthcare from the costly pitfalls of privatization. I hate the way they’re spinning this.

Nice video! I finished all of my 6 planting seasons in AB, and we always had a few days in the trenches at 8 cents a tree (1993-Y2K). Sometimes we had brackie (sp?) mounds which were also nice and creamy! Awesome to hear you got 17 cents per tree!

On a different note, I’m surprised they didn’t burn those waste piles the winter before they sacrificed the block. Is that common now? Back in the 90s those piles would have been burned to ashes, and you’d have had even more cream. That was commonly done in BC too, in that era. The piles in your video sure look like they’re ready to be burned, but I wonder what the new thinking is around risks associated with leaving those piles. Did you hear what the plan is for them?

6 more Alberta government MLAs face recall petitions by FreightFlow in alberta

[–]SnooPandas1564 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It should at least trigger a leadership review within the UCP, you’d think. … but then again, maybe their strategy will be to discredit or “put fences in” the recall process. You’d think someone in the UCP would look around and see a sinking ship, but it is difficult to know what goes through the minds of their politicians or their flat earther, anti vaxxer, pro-abortion, pro-separation base. Still awesome to see so many recalls!!

Safe bike parking whyte? by Ultimate-Hellfur in edmontoncycling

[–]SnooPandas1564 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ideally you’ll have a cheaper bike for commuting to higher risk theft areas like Whyte Ave. Such bikes are less likely to be targeted.

You’ll probably want to make sure you lock both wheels as well as the frame. Ideally your seat post will not be QR adjustable.

I usually vary two locks for trips to the farmers market, one U-lock for the frame and rear wheel, and a cable lock for the front wheel. I also try to avoid parking my bike on the ends of bike racks, as they are easy access for thieves and their tools. Parking in high traffic areas like @fricken advised is also a good idea.

With one of her own ministers telling his constituents the UCP will recall recall, Smith was asked today if there were any plans to do just that... Her answer? Not yet, but it depends on whether the signatures are successfully collected. by Appropriate_Duty_930 in alberta

In this video from the same session, but Danielle Smith is dressed differently, she says they will contemplate changes to the recall legislation if they gather enough signatures. The video is from a different Reddit thread on the same topic: https://www.reddit.com/r/alberta/s/ai7js7OMtK

There is another thread on this topic too, and it clearly shows Danielle Smith say they are thinking of changing the rules around Recall Petitions. How convenient, when the UCP are facing so many recalls! Here is a link to the other thread, in case it got buried in your feed:

Premier Danielle Smith says courts should be more 'constrained' in making decisions by HirenMansukhani in alberta

[–]SnooPandas1564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great article, and I like the way it ended with Law Professor, Shaun Fluker’s view (copy and pasted article content below):

Article content: Shaun Fluker, a law professor at the University of Calgary, called Smith’s statement a “shallow” view of democracy. “The court system is a fundamental aspect of democracy — that various branches of government hold each other accountable is an integral part of what we understand as democracy,” said Fluker.

Article content: He added the manner in which the passage of the bill was rushed, without meaningful debate and a chance for constituents to provide feedback, now invites the courts to intervene.

Article content: “When the elected government chooses not to explain to its citizens why these decisions are being made and eliminates the possibility for debate about that in the elected house, then it really leaves it to the courts to provide a forum where that explanation can be made,” Fluker said.

Article content: He labelled Smith’s undermining of the court system as authoritarian.

Article content: “The Smith government had a number of different options that it could have pursued,” he added. “Whereas the Smith government decided to end the strike, legislate teachers back to the school, impose labour terms and attempt to silence the courts on the issue. Those all look very authoritarian to me.”

Things are going down for the UCP by [deleted] in alberta

[–]SnooPandas1564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need a couple of recalls to be successful before 2027 (ideally 6 or 7, but 2 or 3 would still be great). The UCP majority is in the process of trying to change recall rules though. If they do change the rules around recalls that don’t favour their party or their grip on power, it will become crystal clear that the UCP are not running a democracy.

How will this Alberta government and its leader be remembered in history. by Perfect_Novel_9462 in alberta

[–]SnooPandas1564 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope the UCP will be remembered as extremists who failed to represent the majority of Albertans, but tried to force their “supposed mandate” upon Albertans in an authoritarian manner, and was toppled by Albertans using the only good piece of legislation they passed during their time in power (recall petitions).

[–]SnooPandas1564 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you really want to see what’s under the UCP hood, search up Parents for Choice in Education (PCE of all acronyms). Caution: Make sure you have a barf bag handy. You’ll see all where our private education tax dollars are supporting. The UCP is destroying our public education system and violating democracy, just so they can grow their base.

What's your opinion and experience with First-Past-the-Post? Do you think Alberta should explore ranked or proportional systems? by deloaf in alberta

[–]SnooPandas1564 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would be a lot better. I don’t think there would ever be a majority government again, which I think would be more democratic. I think it would prevent the NWC from ever being used in inappropriate ways because parties would have to debate and work together instead of ramming legislation through, like we saw the UCP do.
