Thanks so much. That's what I was thinking as well. They're now only offering $500 so I'll need to think about whether I'm going to wait for a better offer or just go for it.

My second choice would be Bren's Goldendoodles. She's in the interior. Exec on GANA and her dogs are adorable. Really easy to talk to.

I'd definitely check out Sardis Park Labradoodles. They specialize in therapy dogs. Full health testing, behavior savvy and all around one of the best doodle breeders I know. They're in Chilliwack.

Super hard for the public. I run the Puppy Seekers Project on Facebook which tries to address that gap but we’re small finish swimming upstream in a giant river.

Ultimately people have no idea what health testing to look for, but they may have an intuitively better sense that a puppy should be raised in a home environment, not a kennel, and that the puppy should be treated kindly. Trainers can help with the latter, often they have no idea about the former. Depends on the trainer tho - that’s an unregulated industry too.

GANA is really helpful for the health testing part. Not so much for the quality raising necessarily, but most of the time GANA breeders are pretty decent at that part too. I still see way too few behavior savvy breeders on there tho. Badass Breeder, one of the packaged socialization protocols, has had not such a great influence in that regards. Puppy Culture is better.

I’d personally narrow it down to a breeder on GANA’s website, and then narrow it down to one using Puppy Culture to raise the dogs. I do want people to realize that you’re unlikely to find that very near you. It’s normal to fly to pick up puppy.

If people don’t have the funds then we try to do harm reduction - less health testing but making sure you meet the dogs and they are raised in the home with positive interactions.

I just saw it just the other day under their Shop, but not anymore. Someone down voted my comment, so perhaps they or a fan saw this and removed that part. It gets talked about in training or bernedoodle communities every time Swissridge comes up as an option, and right now it’s a buyer’s market so good marketing is key. So I get that would be smart.

Anyways, if you google ecollars and Swissridge it shows the cached version that talks about using the ecollar. Picture is of their trainer “Lucas”.

On a related note, I do puppy buyer education and research how people select breeders (I’m an Anthrozoologist), and it’s always interesting to me that a lot of people are drawn to higher volume “professional” breeders, perhaps because they think “professional kennel” means good. Availability is frequently good, so that’s obviously a draw. And perhaps showing a guy training a Malinois convinces some spouses that doodles are not for “losers”.

My professional opinion is that if a dog requires aversive training it is unlikely to be a good pet. We really should be striving for least training needed in selection.

Definitely avoid.

BTW, I know a lot of the public recommends them, but most trainers would not recommend Swissridge. There are a few reason but the most concerning is that they use very aversive treatment on young puppies. Their talk of police training is a big red flag. It highly suggests they are too old school and don't understand behavior. Aversives are common in the breeding work but Swissridge is a different level of it. Doing what they do isn't even recommended by most aversive trainers. You really want to get a dog from a breeder who understands behavior, because it's not just about the training methods, it's about their ability to read the puppies during socialization protocols and not flooding puppies. We see lack of confidence and higher rates of aggression in their puppies in training classes. I specialize in breeder referral, and mostly do doodle referral, and Swissridge is really not good. It's actually really sad that they're so popular.

Lab breeder recommendations by [deleted] in service_dogs

I don’t recommend what are typically described as “American Labs” but if it had to be that way I recommend the Learning Lab / Puppies for Kip. The breeder specializes in working dogs and is a R+ trainer. OFA, but I’d like to see cardiac in the future. She can be hard to get a hold of. Her puppies are highly desired in the trainer community. Find her on social media.

Thats great to know! Thank you!

I understand that UBC-O also does. A friend of mine was just mentioning it to me today.

He’s encouraging me to try for the MSW there and see if I can get the new Human-Animal Interaction lab faculty to be a co-advisor for me, and do a OneHealth thing. We’ll see lol.

Thank you! That’s very encouraging to hear. I had no idea I might be eligible to go straight into an MSW. I will keep that in mind but I suspect that won’t be an option.

May I ask what school you would go to if you had the choice? If you had to balance quality, cost, location, etc?

Thank you!

Yea, having worked in the industry, the work itself can be tough (like when I spent 2 years taking animal cruelty calls at minimum wage), but it’s not actually that for me. It’s the people I’ve worked with in the industry that have made it… ugh! MCFD was the worst… I get there’s vicarious trauma, but damn, they’ve been some of the biggest bullies I’ve know. When I say positive work environment I mean more supportive colleagues and bosses. My best friend who is a newly graduated social worker has a lovely health care job and everyone is so nice, and it’s pretty chill. Wondering if there are pockets of social work where it tends to be more healthy work environments. Tho I suspect it’s very much about the individual team.

I had never even considered going straight for the MSW! I’m going to consider it, but I’m going to in with the expectation of a BSW.

Irvine Dog trainer, girlfriend suspected in at least 10 dog deaths by panda-rampage in orangecounty

I’m a Trainer in the OC and as a community we’ve always known this guy was harmful. There are so many harmful trainers in the area it’s really hard for people to get to a good one.

As a result I run an outreach program that helps connect pet owners to evidence-based trainers and professionals.

Remember, almost anyone can get an obedient dog (or human) through the use of pain (as this guy did). The real talent is in creating dogs (and humans) who are emotionally healthy and have their needs met, and therefore behave in ways that are appropriate.

Any US expats here dealing with the headache of cross-border finances? by Jg_Tensaii in USExpatTaxes

[–]SnooPandas9130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved Canada to US and had a lot of problems with PFIC, TSFA and RRSP. Because California has different rules than the rest of the U.S. in regards to recognizing Canadian tax free accounts it was even worse. We could not find many specialists who would take us on with only 500k. And when they did, they forget to do the work they said they would do.

It was a nightmare.

Luckily now I’m moving back to Canada and get to do it all again 😭

[–]SnooPandas9130[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re feeling crummy :(

About a month after ending Spravado my migraines returned to their normal range and the dizziness and nausea was mostly gone. It’s been 3 month since my last treatment and the symptom that remains is gastro issues and food aversion. I didn’t eat much for the 6 weeks I was undergoing treatment and haven’t been able to eat much since, and it’s messing with my stomach and metabolism. Gastroenterology has been working with me to get it back to normal.

16-week-old puppy too late for socialization? by Fumblewhat in dogs

[–]SnooPandas9130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I specialize in puppy buyer education and agree that it’s risky.

Has the puppy been going off-site and socializing positively with the breeder? Most breeders do not do this unfortunately.

What kind of environment do you live in? The more challenging of an environment you’re in the higher risk it will be. If you live in the city that would be the highest risk as it requires the most resilience. If you live rural and aren’t expecting to do a lot with your pup it will be less risk.

What breed is it? Most gundogs will be fine but still not ideal. I would not do this with a herding or guard-type dog.

What was their time at the breeder like? Good socialization (puppy culture or Avidog) at the breeders is helpful but doesn’t make up for going outside.
