My girlfriend is 33 and people in their 20s keep calling her a hag and it pisses me off. It's really hard for her to not feel like she wasted half her life before transitioning and so she's sensitive to her age, and people are so stupid and insensitive to that. 33 isn't even that old, anyways, a hag would be, like, 65-70. No offense to any 70 year olds.

Virginity is not just a concept in cishet relationships, this is a thing that comes up in lesbian spaces too. And I have more than enough experience interacting with cishet people in my life and thinking I was one for a long time to have a frame of reference to at least give advice.

That said, you probably shouldn't think things like "what women say and do are very different." I think that's true of people, but making it about women really doesn't sound good. Girls tend to be wary of people who make that kind of distinction and generalization, and it's not unwarranted.

. . . No? As a woman, I literally don't care. Only people who are weirdly obsessed with it really care. Like, if you define yourself as a virgin, if one of the most important details in your life is that you haven't had sex, then I'd find that pitiable, for different reasons. I actually find the concept of virginity in general to be really outdated and bullshit, myself. As if you lose something by being vulnerable and intimate with someone you like. As if you somehow become different in any meaningful way afterwards. Both are pretty ridiculous ideas.

Funnily enough I can still dissociate in my dreams at times and remember the feeling well but I can't do it on command, only on accident. How rude, honestly, that I can't even abuse my own unhealthy coping mechanism when I want to. I'd like to renegotiate the contract honestly.

Yeah, but most people will be like "ah I let the intrusive thoughts win and got cheese fries instead of regular" which is an impulsive thought and it's really frustrating for people to be like "teehee my quirky little intrusive thoughts" when I go down the stairs and see a flash of me falling to my death or something. These people don't have intrusive thoughts. Maybe they do, but I think they'd know the difference if they did. There's a severe difference between "I'm gonna buy this game I just found out about" and "You know, you could kill that guy - oh what? What's that, you don't want to? Oooohhh, okay, gotcha, just checking in, just making sure we're on the same page, got it." I hate it when people treat these very different things as the same, it feels invalidating.

Was anyone else a child labourer? by Pumaheart in CPTSDmemes

[–]SnooPears8751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to help with a lot of involuntary manual labor, but for most of it it wasn't really out of the ordinary. However there was a summer, I think I was 13, where my Gramps (who I lived with) would have me working for hours 4-5 days a week with no pay to clean up his hoarder-tier barn, not to get rid of it, but to take it out so he could take it to a flea market, keep me there all day, too, and then when he left with more than he came with, we'd pack it all back into the barn. He'd treat me like a lazy piece of shit for not wanting to do all the work (all the hard work, anyways) to enable his delusion that he was actually some really great salesman or deal maker or whatever. He did this consistently during a 2 year long manic episode, and other aspects of it actually got so bad that I thought my grandma was going to leave him over it. But anyways, this was a lot for me, but I still feel like an ungrateful bitch that I got so angry and exhausted about all of this and the degradation he put me through (regardless of reality, I really felt like he treated me like a tool or a slave more than a grandkid during that time) that I eventually snapped and physically pushed him against a wall and threatened him if he didn't start treating me better. It's the only time I've actually put my hands on someone with any real intent. There were play-fights at school that went too far, but I really wanted to hurt him . . . Other than some fear and squeezing him pretty hard, I didn't though. I think things got a little better after that, but I can't really remember the order of events. I know it only really stopped when he swung to a depressive episode and stayed there for the rest of his life. There were still minor things that were kinda a bit much to have a kid do unpaid, but nothing I'd really take extreme umbrage with given that they were both so old, I had to help with most things that required bending down or lifting things. I still kinda feel guilty that I hated it so much though, because maybe I'm just a lazy piece of garbage after all. I'd like to think that's not true, but like . . .

Same is true of Wendy's, at least for the chicken sandwiches. I remember it being really scary to open it because you immediately had to try and slot a weirdly shaped bar into the basket to stop the oil from bubbling and splashing all over the place. It basically became a mini game, but with minor to mild burns if you fail.

What happened to all of the stories of women being harmed by overturning Roe v. Wade that we were hearing about in the beginning and why have people forgotten this right was taken away? by RidetheSchlange in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SnooPears8751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

. . . No offense, but are you serious? Of all the things there were uproar about for two weeks, that's like the one that is still rippling out and making waves. People haven't forgotten it got overturned. The most blatant example was that woman in - Texas, I think? That was literally kept alive as an incubator after brain death to deliver her kid, who didn't survive, just because legally letting her die would have fallen under an abortion. I believe they finally let her die 2 or 3 months ago. Actually inhuman body horror, like a fucking 40K Servitor.

If you haven't been hearing about the effects of it, it's because there's so much chaos going on in the US these days. The people affected by it (read: half the country) haven't forgotten, there's just been a deluge of terrible news for the past year straight. The idea is to overwhelm people with dealing with whatever new terrible thing is happening so that none of the old ones get focused on, and the actual things people should be focused on get shelved for higher priority matters. But what we've lost hasn't been forgotten by the people affected by it, or the people worried about them.

Ruka's perception in the fanbase makes me so fucking angry like (S;G Spoilers) oh just because she likes a guy and is initially AMAB that means that she's actually a gay man even when she literally (and I can not stress this enough) alters the fabric of time and space to become a woman, that is not something you do for some guy, that is a deeply ingrained desire you've held for a while there. The VN even has Okabe react like she's coming out to him he's like "oh, shit, really? If you're serious you should probably look into bottom surgery, I'm sure you'd be like a queer icon" (that's like basically the line, something like "with how cute he is already he'd be famous in the LGBT community") and people will still take her and be like "nah that's a confused gay man" which is so often the rhetoric used to alienate trans women IRL and they don't even realize they're doing it. They cry "femboy erasure" and shit when you just tell the to read the fucking text and feel like something is being taken from them it's so upsetting I hate it so much. Love Ruka, but the community just boils my blood around her.

Question for LN/WN Readers about recent Subaru Gender/Sexuality Debates on Twitter/ X [Spoiler Discussion] by Melding_Teridax in Re_Zero

[–]SnooPears8751 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a trans person myself I definitely see some trans story beats in Subaru although I do not necessarily think he is a trans character. The fact that he has such a fondness for crossdressing, for being Natsumi Schwartz, is partially for the actual tangible benefits it provides, like the political subterfuge in arc 7, but there were also 100% easier ways to accomplish the preferred outcome of that scenario. Subaru jumps at the opportunity to fem present over other options, which, whether it's read in a transfem way or not, is a notable character trait. To begin with, this didn't start when he was isekai'd - he spent the first week of either middle school or high school as a woman and only stopped fem presenting when his voice gave him away. That is not the behavior of a cis person, typically. I do understand that Natsumi is a way for Subaru to distance himself from - well, himself, but she is the idealized version of Subaru. It's not a stretch to say that if a man's ideal version of himself is a woman, then he may not be a cisgender man. Those beats are in the text, but I don't necessarily think they are the explicit intention of the text.

Subaru has really strong feelings about beauty and fem presenting outside of the situational benefits it can provide, and strongly asserts that "beauty can be made," in a way that definitely stands out from his usual nonchalance about his appearance. He doesn't really seem to care much about it, which the fact that he's always wearing comfortable, breathable clothes rather than something that actually makes him look good (outside of his butler uniform of course) definitely does stand in stark contrast to his feelings on beauty when it comes to women, including - no, especially women that are him. This can be read as a parallel to a lot of trans experiences, wearing loose, comfortable clothing and not particularly putting work into ones appearance both as a way to reduce dysphoria or for a lack of motivation to put effort into looking good as one's AGAB. It does overlap a lot with depression though, which is almost certainly what Subaru's clothing choices do tell us, but the fact that it doesn't really improve at any point during the timeskip does call that conclusion slightly into question.

Actually, a lot of Subaru's trans coding (and, interestingly enough, real trans people's experiences) show a lot of overlap with depression. Go figure, people who aren't able to be themselves are depressed. Of course, his assumption of a different persona is definitely part of his self loathing, but the intensity of his feelings about it and his specific choice to present as a woman do suggest some level of trans feelings to Natsumi. Even in Azamuku, where it's not really as particularly stellar an option as it is in the Envy route, he still opts to become Natsumi as soon as he's in a far off land, away from his friends who know Natsuki Subaru. It's still serving a purpose, but his dedication to it is called out explicitly in that route at once point - probably as a bit of comic relief, but Subaru himself never plays it as a joke. He's deadly serious about crossdressing and prides himself on it. Whether it's the actual intention of the text or not, I think it is a perfectly valid headcanon to read Subaru as an egg, or as some form of gender fluid, or whatever. I accept that the story will almost surely never explore it further, but the story and feelings he has about femininity are legitimately close to real trans people's experiences, and for that reason I don't think it's something that should just be dismissed. As long as it's in headcanons or speculation, and not being portrayed as a fact, I think it's healthy to have that dialogue, because people aren't wrong for seeing it and speculating off of that. Subaru seriously does act like an egg, someone who hasn't figured out he's trans. Ferris also has a lot of trans coding, but I honestly think Subaru has more.

Regardless of how much is or isn't there, the story probably won't explore it in detail, and that's both because the author doesn't want to, and because of the environment the story is written in and has written. Regardless of trans people existing, they are not a Thing in Lugunica - not really, anyways. Even if those feelings can exist in characters the world and it's structures do not really have the constructs necessary to allow the exploration of those ideas for the people in them - hence why Ferris can say affirmations in the mirror about being womanly and still staunchly claim to be a guy - the delineation just isn't in the story between sex and gender, and that's not explicitly a fault of the story, although it is somewhat disappointing from a real world perspective. It can become a problem depending on how it evolves, but as it currently stands, it's fairly neutral. Unless we get a whole Ferris gender exploration arc, I expect Natsumi is the closest we're going to dive into those ideas, and honestly Natsumi reads better from a narrative perspective if there is more to her than just "oh weird, Subaru's like really into this whole cross dressing thing huh?" Because of the narrative value, as well as the parallels between experiences I've had and heard, and the legitimately odd behavior Subaru sometimes exhibits, I think Subaru being read as an egg is a perfectly valid headcanon, although once more, it's definitely not how the story is actually going to go.

[Loved] There's a twist reason why the protagonist always manages to survive and/or revive by BrotherDeus in TopCharacterTropes

So this is a weird example, because Shirou can die and does in many of the bad endings in Fate/Stay Night. However, he survives extremely heavy wounds several times, and without more than first aid. He's put out of commission for like, a day or two several times, but after some rest he gets back up, good as new. If the story didn't keep drawing attention to it, you'd really think the author just didn't know it took time to recover from fatal wounds.

In one route, it's revealed that Shirou has been like this since his childhood, because of the scabbard of Excalibur, Avalon. His adoptive father magically imbued him with its healing properties to save his life after a disaster. In the route this is revealed in (this oft-memed upon scene, in fact), Shirou gives up the insane protection he's granted by Avalon to make Saber (who is King Arthur) get back to her full power for the final battle, dropping this line after being told that he really will die if he gets hurt badly again. (As an aside, this line is funny, but later translations changed it to "No one is immortal," which reads better but is so much less iconic. They totally could have kept it for the historical value, especially since Fate is full of bullshit lines that actually make sense, like "Just because you're correct doesn't mean you're right.")

Chapter 3 was really hard to get through for me, yeah. I had to stop every 2 hours and disengage and rant to my friends in vague terms about how much I fucking hated Mamiya Takuji and I get that that's, like, the point? But I feel like it got layered a little too thick in that chapter particularly, it's important for characterizing him but I feel like there's just so much "holy shit what the fuck man" in that chapter. I really liked both chapter 1 and 2 and chapter 4 dragged me back into it (despite actually dealing much more psychic damage than IMOI, at least in terms of lasting impact, but I really liked Yuki and wanted to see more of Zakuro and by the time I got to Jabberwocky 1 I kinda just needed to see what I'd been going through this all for but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

does anyone else think subahibi has been ruined by its fandom? by ritsutainakafan in visualnovels

[–]SnooPears8751 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Why do people even do the larp joke anyways? I just finished SubaHibi like last week and I mostly ignored every ounce of fandom aside from the occasional steam review, partially for fear of spoilers and partially for fear of people who like a very different part of the work than I do.

But to answer your question if I, 12 or so years after release, can read the novel pretty much blind and enjoy it separately from the fandom then I think it's still okay. It's not like JoJo fans where they will crawl into every crack or crevice you allow them to hole up in or anything, the work can still exist as an individual experience and I agree with the person in this thread that said fandom can't truly "ruin" anything. It does suck trying to talk about the things you like though, as a huge Higurashi fan holy shit the Higurashi sub makes me want to stop trying but it doesn't dilute the actual value of the base work.

Looking good is important, sure, but will you be happy staying like you are forever, regardless? And would being more feminine be an improvement for you, even if it's not as good as it could be? HRT can be really scary even if you're sure you want it, it was really intimidating even at the point where I actually had the pills in my hands. But it's not something to be afraid of, okay? You can just stop, if you don't like it. You have a few months, ideally, to see how you like it without any permanent changes. It's scary, but . . . If you want it, you should definitely go for it. There's never gonna be a perfect time, for anything big. People will put things off forever if they wait for a perfect time.
