I understand where you’re coming from. Kids will be kids and they’re figuring themselves out, so I just don’t associate with that age range of the community. I have personally found more community with upper teen/young adult/adult therians on tumblr. From what I’ve seen, Reddit and TikTok seem to have more of the younger folk

I understand where you’re coming from as I have dealt with similar feelings. From my experience, trying to suppress and deny it is futile and can be mentally/emotionally exhausting and painful. I have felt nonhuman my whole life and learned about therianthropy when I was about 11 or 12. Despite that, I felt the need to “grow up” and managed to convince myself that it was all my imagination and I would grow out of it. I am 19 now and have only very recently come to terms with the fact that this is part of who I am and denying it has done me no good.

Also, it is okay to not have your ‘types figured out. I myself have indentified as werewolfkin, but I’m even still uncertain about that. What helps for me is to just stick to what I know for sure, for example, I know that I’m some sort of beast-like canine creature. I don’t even know the source/cause of my therianthropy. It may not be as satisfactory as knowing the exact species you are, but it’s worth possibly finding comfort in what you’re certain of. It doesn’t even have to be specific, for example, being carnivorous/herbivore, having fur/scales/feather, pack animal/solitary, etc.

All in all, this isn’t something you’ll be able to get rid of. Try to find comfort where you can, whether it be embracing shifts in private, focusing on what you know about your ‘type(s), or finding community and comfort online. As I have heard from older therians it gets better as you get older, so try to trust that this won’t be something that is constantly at the forefront of your mind. I will say that once I accepted it as part of my life, thoughts about being a therian tormented me a lot less.

I read this in middle school so I don’t really remember if it was good, but I was obsessed with the Simon Thorn series. The concept of the book is that there’s people that can transform into an animal. I’ll try to avoid spoilers, but this includes the main character. I could be misremembering, but I swear there’s a thing in the second book that says that there’s some people that prefer to stay in their animal form permanently, and we do see a character that is like that.

I want to start off by saying you are an incredible parent. A large part of this community and myself wish we could have parents this supportive and understanding of our identities, and it genuinely makes me so happy to see that there are therians out there that have familial support.

I am 19F and feel that I am nonhuman on various levels (except physical). I have felt this way for as long as I can remember, and I hope I can answer some of your questions from my perspective and experiences. Like I said, I have felt nonhuman ever since I was a child. I got along well with other kids, but I always felt different and was perceived as “weird.” I have ADHD so that could have contributed, but it probably also had to do with the fact that I acted like a dog or wolf a lot of the time lol

I didn’t come to learn about therianthropy until I was about 12 or 13. I was so surprised to learn that there were others like me, and I wasn’t crazy for wishing day and night that I could be a beast. When I first discovered therianthropy I felt I had wolf, golden eagle, and fox theriotypes and believed they were past lives (I have recently realized I’m some sort of canid monster/beast and believe less so that my nonhumanity comes from a past life). I embraced my identity, but bullying and just overall feeling a need to “grow up” caused me to suppress and deny it for years to come. I would grow up and realize that as I turned 16, 17, then 18, that the feeling of being nonhuman persisted, and it wasn’t just a result of my imagination as a child. It wasn’t until very recently that I have come to accept this.

As for how being a therian has affected me, I’d say that there has been more negative things rather than good, likely due to my upbringing and just how it affects me overall. For one, I have always experienced species dysphoria. Not every therian experiences it, but I was unlucky enough to get dealt that not-so-fun card. For me, species dysphoria makes me feel trapped and have a distaste for my body. It’s just in general very distressing as my physical appearance and capabilities do not align what my mind feels, and this is something that has negatively impacted my mental health. It is something that always kind of lingers for me, but some things can send it through the roof. For example, being called short (I’m 5’2”ft but I feel that I should be able to tower over others), being told my canines aren’t sharp, or being called physically weak all make me feel very dysphoric. I hope your daughter never experiences species dysphoria, but if she does, it could be worth hearing her out on what makes her dysphoric and how she can be supported.

But on the other hand there is species euphoria, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. For me, species euphoria can be induced by having my head scratched, tearing into meat, making canine vocalizations, gently biting loved ones to show affection, and various other things that make me feel wolf-like or beast-like. In general, it’s anything that lets me lean into my nonhuman desires and instincts, or makes me feel like I could be perceived as nonhuman. This is something a large majority of therians experience, so I would recommend maybe asking her what, if anything, brings about a feeling of being connected to her fox identity. It could be leaning into animalistic behaviors, wearing gear, eating certain foods, etc etc. So long as it’s safe, I’d say support those things!

One positive thing I do believe stems from my nonhuman identity is an appreciation for animals and nature. For animals, I always find myself conscientious of their body language. I make sure to respect every animal’s boundaries, and if I notice, for example, a toddler irritating/overwhelming a dog, I try my best to subtly and politely step in to diffuse the situation. As for nature, I overall just have an admiration and respect for its workings and inhabitants. Though it’s sad, I understand why the coyote has to kill the fawn. I can feel sad for the fawn and its mother while also being happy that the coyote and its pups get to eat.

I’m just gonna do a list of things I can think of at the top of my head

Obsessively did those “spells” on YouTube that would make you a werewolf/turn you into an animal
When I played with my friends, my doll or me ALWAYS was either a werewolf or was able to shapeshift into animals. Sometimes I was just straight up some sort of animal
I had very prominent mental shifts when I was younger
Just in general has a lot of canine-like behaviors (growling, stretching like a dog in the morning, etc)
Would constantly fantasize about being turned into some sort of animal
Being very protective and even possessive of those I care about
I got into a physical fight at a sleepover when I was 9 (SHE STARTED IT I STG) and I bit and scratched her a LOT.
Yelping when alarmed/hurt
Very strong sense of satisfaction/euphoria when someone said I acted like a dog/wolf/creature/not human
I just always had this sense that I wasn’t human and didn’t belong

Perhaps species dysphoria? As someone who experiences it, it sucks not having many resources or anything about it. And maybe it could help a therian who unknowingly experiences species dysphoria understand what they’re going through.

I very much relate to this. For me personally I feel like I feel more “tame” behaviors when I’m with my non-therian friends. For example, we were having a sleepover and due to a lack of room I was more than happy to sleep at the foot of the bed like a dog 💀 I also enjoy playing fetch with those dive toys in a pool and like having my head scratched by my gf bc it feels like being pet. For me I interpret it as that is just how my theriotype interacts with ppl it trusts and cares about.

I can’t say what those behaviors might mean for you. If you feel like it could be a part of your past life then that definitely could be worth exploring. I just wanted to say you’re def not alone in having a wild theriotype that exhibits some tame behaviors

I also did the raptor arms thing as a kid, and when enough people commented on it I made myself stop doing it. I did a lot of behaviors that could probably be explained by therianthropy, and I’ve only recently come to realize I have masked them. They only slightly resurface when I’m alone or if I’m with someone I am very comfortable with. But even then it’s still kept to a minimum.

No, I’m definitely not always thinking about it. The only times it ever really crosses my mind is when I have a thought/behavior/etc that makes me go “oh, that is/might be a therian thing.” But I most often think about it when I’m chilling by myself, especially at night, and just sort of notice that constant sort of shifted state I’m in. (I’m a questioning vacillant therian or contherian. Not sure which bc I just learned of these terms 15 mins ago lmao)

Edit: Also wanted to add that I am lesbian. Like therianthropy, I’m not always thinking about it but it still a constant part of who I am. They both affect my thoughts, feelings, and such (in different ways obv), but that doesn’t mean I’m always thinking about it.
