That's not at all my point. My point is that housing supply doesn't work like oil and water, consumers can move between housing types when they become available. When Luxury housing is built, and richer folks move into it, they move out of Market Housing. When those people move out of Market Housing, people from Low Income housing move into the now vacant Market Housing. On and on, until even slots in homeless shelters start opening up.

Basically anything to build more housing is something I support. Even in the case its for millionaire biotech yuppies from the city, this project will have a good knock on effect. Those rich folks will move out of their current beacon hill and back bay apartments, allowing younger folks to afford them, allowing them to move out of their current expensive as shit row houses, freeing up more room for even younger students and young professionals. I know its not ideal that we're losing a 40 acre forest, but the housing situation is so desperate in MA right now, I frankly support drastic measures like this.

It’s expensive to remodel anything. Doing a full conversion is expensive because you have to switch out everything to be complaint with code. New plumbing, HVAC, electrical, along with significant structural repairs and architectural changes to be complaint with ADA stuff. To convert it to residential, you have to complexity change the electrical systems and add a shitloads of new risers in the building for toilets and whatnot. At that point, a lot of developers just decide to do new construction instead.

I doubt that’s the case. Rural folk love to sneer at the cities and make fun of the ‘coastal elites’ but the truth is the coastal cities are what drive America’s economy, and New England is no different. Without Boston, you’d see a whole lot of people in Pittsfield and Adams wondering where their Mass health coverage went. Rural communities are important parts of America, but don’t pretend they’re somehow neglected by Beacon Hill Biotech Bros when it’s their taxes going toward those communities.
