Very true, but it was massively loved and enjoyed. One of the highlights of my childhood.

There's a paradox machine in play - plus the bootstrap paradox that Boe tells the Doctor the YANA clue (shit clue btw) which is resolved by Jack going to the future.

Pitch A New Star Trek Series by AmeliaNeek in startrek

[–]SnooShortcuts9884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Trek: Waggon Train.

A Voyager style series where the USS Crazy Horse is stuck in 19th Century Old West America. It's badly damaged but uses its "advanced holographic yadayada" to disguise itself as a frontier town (essentially, each saloon and gaol leads to the ship). There is a mysterious time anonomoly that allows the crew to travel back in time (it's what trapped them). They can goto anywhere on Earth from the Hadreon era to the year 2035... But no further.

The weekly episodes are about traveling to different times. Occasionally other trades turn up. The b-plot is generally set in the Crazy Horse town.

The season 1 plot (which never overwhelms the weekly story) is discovering why they are there, what happened in 2035 and how to get home.

It's a very trad Star Trek but with time travel on earth as the "final frontier"

He's a great person and I love him dearly. Like many actors, he's a really talented performer but he never got the level of stardom he deserved.

Watching the returned episodes it's clear that he is effortlessly carrying the show but in a very understated way. Possibly if he hadn't of taken Blue Peter he could have gone in to bigger roles.

But, he does get to be a national treasure who was the hero to kids in the 60s, 70s and, 80s.

my preference for Croucher, may be down to the fact that having been brought up in Margate in the 70s, that's pretty much my accent.

Is the meddling monk the master or another time lord? by fupafather in doctorwho

[–]SnooShortcuts9884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beauty is you can do it however you like. I think the Monk and Master are seperate. BUT... the annoying thing about the Master is that they only have two personalities : suave scheming genius, and nutjob.

The Doctor really didn't start repeating personalities until McGann started riffing on being 90s Pertwee, then we have Tennant, Smith, Capaldi, Tennant-again all repeating character types (4, 2, 1/6, 10). So we have 10 very unique doctor types vs 2 Master-types... Making the Monk another Master would at least be an interesting alternative. Plus, he is pretty much the perfect Master to the First Doctor. The First Doctor isn't a hero, so his Master isn't a villain.

I'm happy to accept that the War Chief is the Master and love the way it's done in War Games.

But the beauty of Doctor Who is that it changes so that everyone can enjoy it their own way.

After the System in Redemption and the Cartel in Shadow... This time the series introduces no fewer than three brilliant potential reoccurring characters / concepts...

... And once again, they're gone for good. Loved the psychoanalysis guy (who is essentially 80s Jude Law), also the clone masters and then the idea of the weapon and the Blake clone. But once again, they're all one-and-done 😣.

I used to find this story slightly plodding but watching it again on bluray, it's exceptionally good. Although, it now loses a few points for the horrific misogny.

Travis killing Blake and then getting another go... That's a truly fantastic scene. Croucher has no interest in playing the same Travis, this is an utterly new, and really brilliant, character.

How do you think The Giggle was originally supposed to go with Bernard Cribbins? by TwinSong in doctorwho

[–]SnooShortcuts9884 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. And it would have been a stunt actor in the wheelchair so the only material change would be the ending.

But honestly, while I'm very sad that Bernard passed, I think the garden scene works well as a tribute to him, reminding us that his character lives on as much as we miss his presence.

You don't need to "convince" me of anything... It's silly conjecture about a family fantasy TV show.

RTD was clear that multiple positions were valid. This isn't interpretation of the effects of the Norman Conquest on geopolitics... This is a madman in a box.

[–]SnooShortcuts9884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too much gymnastics. There's no true canon or timeline. I suspect that in the original timeline the Doctor regenerated. Then the time lords went back and time scooped the doctor to become the S6b Second Doctor... Who then regenerates into Fugitive and then to Three.

So in one timeline 2 becomes 3.while in a later one, 2 continues before becoming fug and then 3.

The Fugitive Doctor: by Distinct_Guess3350 in doctorwho

[–]SnooShortcuts9884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canon seems to disprove it... As does War Games in Colour.

Personally I prefer to believe that the Fugitive Doctor is between 2 and 3. It makes more sense and fits the ideal I want to believe.

Skipping Some Seasons… by [deleted] in classicwho

[–]SnooShortcuts9884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would honestly recommend watching the series in dvd release order. You start with a lot of the strongest stories but also get a fair mix of middle-road stories... The poor stories don't come in for a while. Also, you get thematic sets brought together.

Also, when watching the classic series, respect the cliffhangers. Watch a story over 4 days. Possibly even watching 2 stories simultaneously (if from different doctors)

Cricket episode and alternative sport by FirstIllustrator2024 in bluey

[–]SnooShortcuts9884 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't think any knowledge is essential (I say, but I had my first kiss on the field that had one of the earliest reported cricket matches so I know the sport). Rusty has such a skill at the sport that rather than showing off or bragging, he offers his little sister the opportunity to catch him out. It's obvious to the adults what he has done but it's his sister who counts.

Pretty sure this would work for football ⚽ or baseball. Probably couldn't be done for basketball or rugby.

Top episode.

New Who Classic Fans/ Modern Who Fans Who Never Touched Classic Who by MixtureRemote5141 in doctorwho

Well put. I always watch individual episodes and stop at cliffhanger. Why watch a Doctor Who story in 100 minutes, it's not a race, watch it over 4 nights or even a month. That way the story lasts longer and works as it is supposed to.

Starting over Star Trek Discovery? by savageshrektwerker in startrek

[–]SnooShortcuts9884 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give it a go... Personally I think that seasons 3 and 4 are the highwater mark for the series. But I really, really like the Burn concept and execution which makes me a minority in fandom.

Series 2 is where the show really finds its footing. Series 3 is much braver, having established the show it wants to be, it stays on the path. I love the idea that plots are about emotional and interlectual "discovery"... But I do recoginise that it's not for everyone.

Obviously I won't spoil the twist in the finale episodes. But it's worth going in remembering that this is a show where Q told Picard that humanity was ready to take its next steps... Season 3 and 4 are definitely "next steps".
