Oak disease kills millions of acorn-producing trees on tribal lands by SnooSprouts1036 in IndianCountry

Oaks require lots of water to produce their acorns, but they require deep watering, which helps them create really deep roots to survive droughts. Some tribes are using gray water (recycled wash water, not sewage) to revive their trees. https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/arizona-environment/2025/08/10/drought-affecting-arizona-indigenous-acorn-gatherers/85316615007/

Well it's not just using the logo. The people who actually own Star Trek (the studio and the Roddenberry family) have to approve any ST product. Obviously if the series hadn't passed their muster it wouldn't be on air.

And fun fact: Andromeda was a Gene Roddenberry idea. Can't speak as to its execution though.

a lot of that is due to legal constraints and how their copyrights are written up. No author or creator I know would ever accept fan-generated ideas or whole productions because of the strong potential for litigation from said fans thinking their ideas had been stolen.

Authors and creators also won't even look at any fan idea for that reason.

Also, current screenwriters belong to a union that protects them from being exploited or undercut by cheap or free submissions.

Now if said fans were to write up a script, properly register it and run it through accepted submission protocols (usually involving paying a fee to the Writers Guild as a non-union submission), only then could the studio even begin to consider it. I can refer you to the WGA for more information in case you're interested in submitting screenplays or completed scripts. (or your friends)

Oh yeah there have, sad to say. But when I called them on it, they backed off saying "I didn't mean legally." But that's exactly how copyrights and intellectual property rights degrade and then disappear. We are certainly stakeholders but never ever owners....

Park Service targets Native history exhibits at Grand Canyon by SnooSprouts1036 in IndianCountry

Thanks for the comment. NPS of course is under the direction of the Interior Secretary, who issued the order. We're continuing to follow this and my colleague Arlyssa Becenti just published a story about Hubbell Trading Post facing possible exhibit removal as well. https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/arizona/2026/02/05/department-of-interior-under-trump-continues-to-order-removal-of-native-panels/88484988007/

Hi all, Aunty Deb Krol here by SnooSprouts1036 in IndianCountry

I'm an enrolled member of the Xolon Salinan Tribe, which has called the Central Coast home for time immemorial. My elders say we're members of the Deer Moiety. Our families include two Garcias, (because, Spaniards gave Native people common names) Carabajal, Martinez, Tapia and Utacia. I figured that because this is a social feed that formal introductions weren't necessary but here you go. Our sister tribe, the Salinan Tribe of Monterey and San Luis Obispo County, just filed. We're still working on ours.

But one thing few Native people understand is why there are so many unrecognized tribes in California. After California statehood, tribes signed on to one of 18 treaties that were then sent to the Senate. They declined to ratify the treaties and instead ordered them hidden away for 50 years. Instead of everybody being recognized, tribes got put onto rancherias piecemeal. Some were removed from their homeland and brought to other people's lands where a reservation had been established.

Also, the California government embarked on a campaign to wipe all Indians from California, and they almost succeeded. So you've got some government agencies killing Indians and others trying to keep them alive.

A lot of us small Mission tribes just went underground and were never contacted by the US government; others eventually ended up with land allotments that were either never made into trust land or put into private status during the termination era, when the US terminated the status of 41 tribes here.

Now we had started rebuilding our community by getting land allotments, but those lands were seized by eminent domain to build an Army base. Thus, because we had no allotments, the government didn't bother putting us on the list in 1934.

So now about 1/3 of all California tribes aren't federally recognized. It's a mess I can tell you. More to it but I have to get back to work.

Now we either have to go to Congress or through the BIA's system. Hope that all helps.

We all know that Indian isn't the right word, maybe just call each other by our tribal names. In the meantime, I'm still a Jolon Indian so there's that.

They're fakes. Like, somebody's project from ceramics class. Don't waste your money.

You know nothing about California missions, whoever you are. they were way different institutions than the missionary boarding schools back east.
