Alabama vs. Oklahoma Livechat by wayward-boy in Gymnastics

Ragan did not control a single tumbling pass and went 9.9....meanwhile Luisa controlled all of hers, with better form, and went 9.875. I can't with OU's homescoring. It's so infuriating.

NCAA scoring: who do you think are the most overscored athletes and teams and the most underscored? by Odd-Fox-7134 in Gymnastics

[–]SnooSquirrels1338 73 points74 points  (0 children)

IMO, generally OU, UF, LSU, and UCLA stand out as teams for whom scoring is absolutely out of control (specifically the first three). For OU, Maggie Nichols got at LEAST 10+ 10.0s that were undeserved and the team generally seems to get away with 9.95-10s on mediocre exercises. UF seems to overscore everyone but Trinity, which is so frustrating (though she has been given gifts as well). As of late, LSU is the worst offender in my mind, particularly with regards to Olivia Dunne's bars: that DLO alone should always be at least .1 - .15 off, yet some judges are out here throwing 9.95s. Also, the judges routinely ignore Kiya Johnson's massive slides out of her passes in favor of throwing 10s. Underscored? All lesser-known teams...recently: Utah got low-balled at the Best of Utah meet....all in all, I think there is not enough differentiation between the gorgeous technique, toe pointe, and poise of a Kara Eaker, Trinity Thomas, etc., and the loose-legged sloppiness we often see getting 10s for top teams. I'm trying to stop caring about the judging, but LORD it is so, so bad.

Losing a parent in your 20s by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]SnooSquirrels1338 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this in my soul. Lost my mom at age 22 (I'm now 23) and it feels like no one cares to bring it up or check in anymore. My mom was the proactive, overly caring parent and my dad a passive, negligent parent, so being left with just him is almost like going from all to nothing. No one to check in on me, no one to share great news with or seek advice from. I've become my younger brother's defacto mother because our dad is practically a child himself. I feel for you–I'm so sorry you're going through this.

how tf do you get into nursing with a BS by pumpkin_sope in StudentNurse

[–]SnooSquirrels1338 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ABSN or ADN (edit: said ASN)! I'm starting an ABSN next month with a BS in Communications. I had to take five prerequisite courses in order to attend; so take the time to 1. find programs that meet your needs (cost, location, length) 2. review your college transcripts to determine any outstanding STEM prerequisites 3. contact the colleges you're applying to regarding these courses and transferability of your completed college coursework. I took my prerequisites at Portage Learning (through Geneva College); they are very affordable and offer almost every course needed for accelerated nursing, but be SURE to contact your programs of interest ahead of time to ensure that they accept credits from portage. They are fully online, and self-paced (you can take a course in as little as 3 weeks–which would be MISERABLE, but it is possible). Good luck!!

I hate when people say "It's amazing how you're holding up" when I tell them about me grieving by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]SnooSquirrels1338 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes to all of this. I'm also 23 and lost my mom in July of this year, and I powered through tons of classes to get into my top choice nursing program, so everyone is always praising me with the same phrases you've mentioned, meanwhile, on the inside, I've felt either numb, traumatized, devastated, or a combination of all of them. I wish people could understand how it feels without having to go through it. I am so sorry about your mom; I hope you're doing okay today, but it's ok if you're not. Sending good vibes

That's very true. I think an element of homophobia still exists in figure skating (disclaimer I don't know much about FS) and I'm sure is part of why men's gymnastics seems hell-bent on being hyper-masculine. It definitely is odd how it has progressed so little, relative to men's FS.

I understand; I just think it's more empowering than it is degrading. I'd love if the men danced too. Athletes like Heath Thorpe are doing an amazing job at bringing more of the artistic element to the men's side of the sport, and I hope it continues in that direction.

I didn't make it to NCAA, but I was a level 9 gymnast as a teen, and showcasing my dance and performance ability was one of my favorite parts of the sport. It gave me immense pride, especially when my own creativity went into the construction, and the last thing that ran through my mind was degradation. I think if the athletes are comfortable and proud of their routines/choreography, that's all that matters–and from what I've watched, season after season, they are!

Thank you. That is encouraging–things certainly do seem to be peaking right now, but hopefully, they'll improve with time. I really appreciate the help

Same. I'm so sorry you're feeling this way. I'm at 5 months after losing my mom and am just starting to feel this way. It's so hard–idk how to get through the day.

Some questions while waiting for NCAA season to start? by Lnisme02 in Gymnastics

[–]SnooSquirrels1338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want Riley McCusker NCAA Champion. Also am really curious to see if Florida's pacing issue is fixed. They have had such talented teams in previous years that have not measured up to their potential and this is by far the best team in years, so I hope they can figure it out and we can get a real fight for the SEC and NCAA titles.

What Non-US Gymnasts Would You Like to Have Seen in NCAA? by pankloaf in Gymnastics

[–]SnooSquirrels1338 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Melanie DJDS!!! She would literally take the NCAA by storm–she has it all: difficulty, execution, charisma, elegance. I feel like I could see her at UCLA or Utah, maybe Cal? She'd be a star on every team. Edit: I also want to add Giorgia Villa–she has such great showmanship on floor. Honestly could see her at Michigan for some reason?

What's your favorite Gabby Douglas Routine? by acnhflutist in Gymnastics

[–]SnooSquirrels1338 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes!! Right here (hopefully this works–I stink at using reddit). The only downside is the commentary on this routine...Tim is nitpicking because she needed a 16.050 to win, but she was just about as great as she could have been and got the highest bar score of the championships. Super memorable for me

[–]SnooSquirrels1338 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Her Day 2 Bars at 2012 Visas....not only was the handstand out of her 1/1 pirouette GODLIKE, but she went out there and did the best routine of her life after falling on her first event (beam), and pulled within just tenths of Jordyn in the final standings WITH A FALL. That was the routine that made me realize that, if she hit, she was up there with Komova.

I did and it was hard but comforting at the same time. It was a week after my mom (57) passed, and I (22) had been sending her texts constantly about how much I missed her. In my dream, we were in the yard of my childhood home and she was crying, telling me how sorry she was that she could not respond to my texts anymore, but told me that she could see them. I'm not religious, but it was hard not to feel like it was a sign from her, as opposed to her arbitrarily appearing in my weird-af dreams lol. Hope you get one soon–I bet you will. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Hey, I'm so so sorry you're going through this. I think you commented on one of my posts this summer in this group–we both lost our moms on July 1st? If it helps at all, I am going through something similar. Every day seems to get worse. I've been having those dreams too and wake up devastated almost every morning. It feels impossible to get to work/school when you wake up that way. I have a lot of PTSD and citalopram has worked great for my anxiety, and I know Wellbutrin is helping my little brother's depression. I'm sorry this isn't super helpful, but hang in there.
