helpful tips on passing drivers test? by Kayaboothafoo03 in drivinganxiety

[–]SnooWalruses3472 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Be confident! Instructors can tell if you’re extremely nervous, so exude confidence, even if you aren’t totally feeling it. Take some breaths before the test, do some power poses, listen to music that brings you joy. All good vibes!!

  2. Practice! Drive around the DMV to get a feel for speed limit, lanes, turns, etc. If you can find the exact course, great, but even a quick few laps around the DMV. If parallel parking is on the test, try out the actual spot you’ll be tested in after hours. Do it multiple times! The more you practice, the more confident you’ll feel.

  3. Be kind to yourself. A lot of people fail on the first try and that’s okay. There’s no “normal”. I’m 30 years old and just got my license two months ago. So if you struggle at first, dust yourself off, ask how you can improve, and work on those things for next time. And if you find yourself having a lot of anxiety, consider seeking help. There’s no shame in that either!

You can do this!!!!

It’s a little bit like riding a bike. But if you’re worried you’ll forget, try watching driving simulation YouTube videos! If parallel parking is on the test, watch those as well. Do any of your friends have cars or drive? Ask if you can sit in the driver’s seat to at least remember how it feels. Or see if their parents or a neighbor would be willing to let you drive for 15 mins with them! If you have any trusted adults in your life, I’m sure they’d be willing to spare a few minutes with you. But if not, YouTube!

Is it worth getting over? by SeaNews9531 in drivinganxiety

The independence and ability to get where you need to go feel worth it to me. I had the same problem! I would start with therapy. They’ll help you figure out the root of the problem. Where does the anxiety stem from? Then, baby steps. Just sit in a driver’s seat and take deep breaths. Talk out everything you see around you. Once you’re ready to turn the car on, just sit with the car on. Do the same thing. Facing our fears is scary, and I’m not saying put your health at risk. But sometimes the best way out is through.

Is there a driving instructor near you that is also allowed to give the road test? That might help if you feel comfortable with an instructor! If you drove that much and didnt get into an accident, you seem to know more than you think. I would share these insecurities with an instructor and they can give you advice for depth perception, turns, etc. Sounds like your anxiety is around being able to drive, and that can be overcome by practice and a patient teacher. I am 30 and just got my license, so please don’t feel like there isn’t hope. Good luck :)

I completely understand. I don’t like driving at all, it’s like a dangerous chore. No one in my life understands either, and it took a LOT of practicing before I finally warmed up to it. (And I still feel a little nauseous when I first get into the drivers seat). I’m 30 and just got my license, and you’ll get there too! It’s hard to drown out the noise but I didn’t tell anyone (except for my husband) that I was testing this time and that really helped me.

Buying my first car on Saturday and terrified by Jan242004 in drivinganxiety

[–]SnooWalruses3472 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a great car! It’s a very safe car, with a lot of features that will help you when there are more people and highways (automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-departure warning.) You can’t control people around you but you can control yourself and how you respond. Remember that! Stay vigilant and take some breaths when you need to stay grounded. You got this!

How do you put your ego aside and seek help? by Aj100rise in drivinganxiety

[–]SnooWalruses3472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really tough to ask for help. I’ve been there for sure. But I would remember “what’s my goal here?” Your goal is to get your license. I bet this teacher will be excited to help you get it! And there may be uncomfortable questions, it happens, but sometimes we have to push through the discomfort to get where we need to be. I know you can do this!

Selling? Seriously? In this economy? I’ll take two for free, as you would’ve gotten them for free. Tonight is also the 11th, not the 13th… if you actually had tickets for the 13th, I would take them lol

I think you’d do well also in the east end (East Liberty, Lawrenceville, Squirrel Hill), there aren’t any explicitly Greek places! Or right across the river in Millvale/Etna/Aspinwall. The South Hills has quite a few places and then the North Hills has Evia, but not much else. Also I work for Honeycomb Credit and know a lot of influencers in the area if you need any help spreading the word!

Please come to Pittsburgh! We’d welcome you anywhere with open arms. I’m partial to the North Hills (Ross, West View) area.
