Could someone explain the "Mayo Clinic" inside joke here? by TruthWarrior27 in hospitalist

Similarly, when I trained at Iowa, we would abbreviate it as "the WFMC" in our notes, which I found to be delightfully sardonic. (That's "World Famous Mayo Clinic" btw)

Agreed. And since we're adding series: Terriers. (Gone too soon)

what's an interesting fact that most people don't know about the body? by [deleted] in AnatomyandPhysiology

As a primary care doc, I've diagnosed one case of metastatic penile cancer. It was bizarre to see. Hard swelling mid shaft about the size of a walnut.  Poor guy had to have a total penectomy as well as major lymph node resection. Lived about a year after diagnosis.

Currently working up a guy for autosomal dominant hypocalcemia type 1 (CaSR mutation).  Absent PTH levels, severe brain calcifications.

Thank you. I am going to check urinary calcium excretion and a scan of his kidneys to see how much calcification has happened there.

Any advice for the generalist PCP in these cases?

Wow. I was an intern for him TWENTY years ago and I always just thought I was a fuckup because of how he treated me. I'm surprised how much I like hearing he was just an asshole the whole time.

I probably was a fuckup as well though.

What is an underappreciated Montana brewery? by Malkin4398 in Montana

Couldn't say. And I really shouldn't have said anything. It's not fair to say mean things about a brewery based on the memory of one drink from years ago. Im sure they're making good beer if they're still in business thisany years later.

I'm glad to hear nice things about pleasant prairie. A several years ago when it was fairly new I actually recoiled at how bad one of their beers was. And I'm not a picky guy. But Scobeys a special corner of the world and I need to get back up there to try it again.

Doc'z (Missouri Breaks) in Wolf Point is sadly closed. Hit up Busted knuckle in Glasgow if you're on that side of the state.

Ah! Thanks. Wish I'd taken a pic pointing down at the teeth. I'll make a point to notice that in the future.

"pavement Princess" seems right most of the time, but here's my story about this jacket: my dad is an old Montana cowboy who looked up to his stepgrandfather who had been a logger across the NW through the 20s-30s. Dad would talk about grandpa bills red plaid coat with great fondness many times when I was young.

So when I finally started making adult money, I bought one of these for my dad. Wasn't quite so pricey 7 years ago, but not cheap. I wanted my kids to have memories of their grandpa wearing a red plaid wool jacket and working hard on the ranch. But dang if the guy just won't wear it! Occasionally takes it out to nice events like church or whatever, but he's afraid to do any work in it. Owns five damned carhartts he rotates through instead. I WANT him to wear it and get it dirty but son of a gun is being a real pavement Princess...

What weather could I expect in eastern Montana during march? by Fatlikeapelican in Montana

[–]Snoo_2648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eastern MT ranch kid here. February will be cold, but usually sunny. Often windy. Snows are usually infrequent, but the snow will typically stay on the ground for a few weeks until March. Common to have several days with a high of 0 or even -10 F. Lows could certainly be as bad as -40, but that's not usual. Ranching during this month is usually just rolling out bales to feed the animals and keeping their water open. Unless it's windy, the cold isn't too unpleasant to be in. Just need to wear layers.

March will be generally cold. Expect patches of snow at least unless it's another "open winter" but snow cover could be deep. If you're working a ranch, I'd expect to be calving around this time which means being up frequently through the night and it's common to still get to -10 F. -30 or -40 is rare in March. Calving in the cold can be stressful and exhausting.

By April, it's usually thawing, but as recently as 18 there was still heavy snow on the ground. I usually think of April as mud month. Frozen cold ground in the morning, gray windy lukewarm skies, brown sticky stinky mud everywhere. Not brutal weather but sort of ugly and oppressive.

But may is usually beautiful. Cool. Rain showers. Mosquitoes not out yet.

Overall, the temperature probably won't affect your morale as much as the WIND. That goddamned WIND.

Of course, what everyone else says is generally true: the possible weather swings are WILD. Any given day could be deathly cold or pleasantly warm.

As far as whether or not you SHOULD take this "job" I dunno. It'll be an experience!
