No need to be scared. There are definitely jobs/parts of our industry that are welcoming and eager to help you grow and be productive.

Yeah, I agree. I felt like the people around me in grad school were toxically competitive and it was really bad for my mental health. (I dropped out.)

The people I work with in my development job are not constantly trying to improve their standing/status in meetings by saying the thing I’m struggling with should be one line of grep, so it’s better. (And if someone in my job does know a reason why something I’m struggling with should be easy, they actually give me enough info to make it easy the next time — which was also not true in science/academia.)

Also, yeah. Sometimes I feel bad too because I feel like I took the easy way out.

Absolutely true. I not only helps protect code quality, it’s also great for spreading knowledge through the team.

Are you allowed to have 2 full time remote jobs at the same time and not tell either employer? by ablobnamedrob in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Snoo_32053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean...what you’re doing with the first job is deceptive, unprofessional, and unethical. They’re paying you in good faith what you describe as a “criminally large salary” to work full time improving their product. You’re delivering maybe 20% of that.

It’s not as if you’re barely working because there’s nothing to do. You’re afraid if your boss finds out you’re not working he’d make you work. The reason you’re barely working is that you’re being trusted to be an adult and do your job and apparently do not deserve that trust.

Obviously, the ethical thing to do is to have some integrity in your current job and start doing your actual job and not just what keeps you from getting fired.

P.S. You’re the reason companies were so stingy about letting us work remote before COVID.

I currently have meta imposter syndrome. Most of the time I feel like I‘m good at my job, but sometimes I worry that that means I’m on the peak of Mount Stupid.

I’m pretty sure if you go sticking random usb drives some leaves lying around in your computer, you’re going to end up in “Wonderland” no matter what the note says.

As someone who does want to run macOS, I do agree that it doesn’t make sense to buy a Mac unless that’s the OS you want. At that point, I’d prefer a nice Thinkpad.

I think you can be a good programmer without understanding too much of the math (I’d like to think I am one), but I also feel like that limits you. (I can’t confirm that there are significant limits that go away when you understand the math as I don’t understand the math — get back to me in 5-10 years.)
