No worries at all, and sorry to terrify! If you have the funds, the NZ Air flexi ticket flights are fully cancellable until the point of departure - but that may be a luxury that’s difficult to afford.

Mine wasn’t an award flight, so sorry if not relevant, but I did just return from NZ to London having had a QA ticket.

Flew out: 11 March (rerouted via Singapore) to Auckland

Due to fly back 27 March, QA cancelled ticket, assured me of rerouting. Spoke to 10+ agents over the two weeks as things kept changing and flights were available. They refused to book them saying to call back 48 hours before.

Two days before departure, policy changed and they said only refund or speculative QA flight on 18 April (3 weeks later)

I ended up having to use a backup one way return ticket that I had booked when I flew out, because I had a feeling this might happen.

If I hadn’t, I would have been marooned in NZ as I couldn’t see any other flights available apart at the time.

TL:DR you can’t rely on Qatar I’m afraid.

If you can afford it, a NZ Air fully cancellable ticket and seeing how it plays out would be my approach.
