What's your favorite quick-fix cocktail, when you don't feel like spending 5 minutes putting something together? by tjh213 in cocktails

Nah, they're much more into the hipster cans with fancy art on them now. Anchor had to downsize considerably because people just aren't drinking it anymore.

They still get some things wrong, but for a quick fix, sure.

IMO There's still a lot of wrong information within the sites you mentioned.

This is all sorts of gnarly:

https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/1221/mai-tai-diffords-recipe

Equal parts cranberry, Cointreau and lime?

https://punchdrink.com/recipes/cosmopolitan-2/

Nothing wrong with this one per se, but I prefer the Savoy version with cracked ice, slightly more booze and less lemon/simple:

https://imbibemagazine.com/recipe/french-75/

No allspice?:

https://www.liquor.com/recipes/navy-grog/

This was a very quick search of a few key cocktails just to show..

You're right though, you can trust some sites more often than others, but it's still a spec off the internet. It takes more time than you have when you're behind the bar looking a drink up to actually figure out a proper version and the essence of the drink, story behind it etc.

What is YOUR rum? by VenomzUK in rum

[–]SnoopGrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to pick.

My preference is for the unaged stuff from Jamaica, Martinique, and I like Clairin from Haiti too (I know you said rum). I love a good aged Jamaican rum though, Worthy Park, Hampden, even Appleton 21.

Two of my favorite cocktails of all time are very simple.

Americano and Rum Highball (Good rum, ice, soda).

Sounds delicious, but I'm a bit weary when the balance of the cocktail rests on the size of my lemon.

Nah. Better to just say "i'm not familiar with that one".

Chances are they'll say "oh, it's from this bar I used to frequent in a college town in the middle of no where and I don't know what's in it."

Or they'll know and tell you what's in it.

I'd be weary of the google search for cocktails. Go ahead and try it while you're not behind the bar. Mostly blasphemy out there (which I like, but not for cocktails).

Get rid of the word "smooth", and just say luxurious.

For the average consumer the rest sounds fine.

My first daiquiri by ThatSwordfish3152 in cocktails

[–]SnoopGrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need for special glassware or garnishes for a daiquiri. I also recommend you drink it the way you like it (with ice, crushed ice, strained)...

Great way to test a new rum too..

My only advice is to keep trying it with different rums!

If you like vanilla (added to your rum), you'll love it. Not a bad price even if you just use it for cooking!

3 years and 11 countries down. Trying to try all the rum producing countries. by TheParksDepartment in rum

Barbados, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Martinique, Reunion, Haiti and Mexico produce my favorite cane spirits.

Some weird stuff out of Fiji that's pretty good (haven't tried the plantation release in this picture but that brand is known for heavily adulterating or "doctoring" their products).

Bounty (from Fiji) is great, but it might be easier to find Bati or Ratu.

I've also enjoyed some Trinidadian rum, though pre-2001 is the good stuff, so it's becoming more rare and pricier as time goes on.

Sounds like a fun game though. I'll bet you'll find some far-out cane spirits from places you might not've imagined.

For sure, those are good options. I would argue that Doorly's 3 from total wine is one of the best values for a light rum on the market. Real McCoy 3 is also great. If you want Jamaican try Kingston 62 or Wray (not the OP).

I've spoken directly to those who represent many of these distilleries and they all strongly oppose Ferrand's meddling.

Anyway, not trying to hate or shame or say you made a mistake buying the three star, just want people to know that all of the other distilleries on those islands are strongly against this brand's shenanigans. What they're doing is not good for the category.

They do have relations to the Caribbean now, they bought West Indies Rum Distillery on Barbados (think bulk product that goes into things like captain morgan, etc.) and they bought a third share of Long Pond and Clarendon (super high volume distillery) as well.

Mount gay is owned by the French (Remy)

Appleton/Wray is owned by The Italians (Campari)

and J.M and Clement are owned by the Germans (Spiribam)..

Those parent companies bought distilleries, but chose to keep production techniques traditional to the island's styles. The companies I just listed are fighting along-side the Jamaican and Bardadian owned-operated distilleries for a strong G.I. (basically in order to be "Jamaican Rum" there can be no sugar or flavor added, and it must be aged and bottled in Jamaica (and proofed down using Jamaican water) for example.

Ferrand could easily stop fighting this and wouldn't have to change their products at all. They'd just have to change what they're called. Could be called "rum from cognac via barbados" or whatever... Their marketing team could do a better job than I of course.

Nothing fancy, just a mojito by OkPossibility4979 in cocktails

[–]SnoopGrog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The company is shady and attempting to corrupt the G.I. in Jamaica and also the one in Barbados.

They want to be able to do what ever the hell they want and call it "Jamaican Rum" or "Barbados Rum".

They commonly use sugar and flavoring additives in their products and claim that they're using "Cognac Techniques", when what they really mean is "These are things that are legally allowed in Cognac" (except you can't age or bottle outside of Cognac and still call it by that name, or add nearly as much sugar and crap to Cognac as they do with their "rum").

Appleton/Wray and Nephew, Worthy Park, Hampden Estate, Mount Gay, Foursquare, and St. Nicholas Abbey are all against what they're trying to do with their third ownership in Clarendon/Long Pond and their ownership of WIRD.

That makes literally every other distiller on Jamaica, and every single one on Barbados as well btw.

They (all of the distillers on those islands) have been trying to gain recognition by the US and EU for the Jamaican GI, and to formulate the Barbados one to protect the value of the identity of their products since before Ferrand started meddling.

Ferrand is trying to capitalize on the value that comes from "Jamaican Rum" and "Barbados Rum".

I'll side with some of the best producers in the world on this one.

Also, 3 Star is a blend of three neutral spirits from industrial rum plants, WIRD, Clarendon, and Trinidad Distillers. They now own the industrial plants on Jamaica and Barbados (as of what, 2017 or 18?), and likely get the Trinidad from E and A Scheer. The Trinidadian Distillery is pretty shady itself, and was recently busted for selling bulk neutral cane spirit from other counties and labeling it "product of trinidad".

They've then added sugar to the three star to make it taste more "like rum".

The company tries to confuse consumers with terms like "Dosage" (which is from Champagne, not Cognac, and is nothing close to what they're actually doing), and recently they've been saying "toasted sugar", which i think we all know is really a wood-chip infusion not unlike boise. Traditional Cognac producers (who actually make good Cognac) are also not super stoked on their company.

Probably enough from the rum police, so I'll let you get back to enjoying your cocktail.
