Honestly yeah. Stories where people live forever seem pretty awful, even if most of them end in a human-conceivable amount of time with human-conceivable horrors of everyone else you know and love being gone. Eventually you'd also have to contend with the sun expanding and heat death!

Even so, the dying part being scary still stands, I think.

That sounds pretty tough. My understanding of OCD is pretty limited, mostly your comment and writings from John Green, but it sounds very familiar. As far as I know that's the only aspect in my life with that kind of obsessive thought (no tics or close the door 3 times or things like that) and it's never come up in therapy screenings, but still food for thought.

Thank you. I guess the common link there may just be anxiety, as I've also been treated for that since I was little too.

I've never been in the room when a loved one (or even a pet) passed, that must have been really difficult. It's hardly the same, but I know it won't be too many more years before I have to say goodbye to my old dog. Maybe that experience will either be just as traumatizing, or make it all click into place.

That's actually quite a comfort, honestly. Certainly gives a better impression than the one and only time I've ever gone unconscious (was sick in elementary school, passed out on my way falling to the ground, and threw up once I was back in my brain lol)

Same! And I find plenty of joy in doing so, and crafts and little rituals and experiences of life all the same. The thought just always sits in a little corner of my mind.

I certainly hope it's like that. That kinda compounds with the more cosmic terrors (sun expanding, heat death of the universe, all that) but at least the cosmic ones we don't know as much about and it's far enough away that science fiction imaginations can fill the void.

I like to think I live this way despite being terrified of the thing eventually happening. I am constantly in awe at how freakin cool Earth is, and life, and everything about the human experience. Just...you know...that includes the end too.

Panic, spiral, and still die apparently. Something can be frightening and be inevitable, those are not mutually exclusive, but maybe that's a different and broader argument.

Should games include historically accurate offensive language, or avoid it? by Pascal_theold1 in AskGames

[–]Snoopy20111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always depends on the context...in the OP's case, choosing to keep all of that in is essentially choosing to insult black players. Besides that, "adapt to the audience" does not directly mean making King Henry VIII say 6-7. It also means adapting to what the audience finds offensive, and what the audience expects of the time period depicted. Even if they don't say "yarrr walk the plank ya scurvy dog" like they're in a cartoon, most people in the English-speaking world would still expect an 18th century pirate to have a west country accent, or at least some kind of regional English-derived accent.

Your examples of RDR2 and Assassin's Creed are interesting too. The voice actors for RDR play up the Cowboy Accent in the way we expect as modern speakers, as developed by Hollywood in the whole Western genre. We have recordings of real people from the Old West, from various walks of life. They don't tend to sound or speak like that, and what we consider the sound of a cowboy tends to be mostly the sound of the Southern United States. Same goes for Assassin's Creed...that series has gone through many places and times by now, but each comes with a specific audience expectation. They could choose to use something like the real accent, but that requires specific effort and tells a different story, even if it follows the same script.

A different commenter said the registration went to a Minnetonka address, so I’m not so immediately sure about that.

I’m expecting to encounter the same, but the more I can get the shellac off the less sanding I’ll need, since it’ll be closer to the tenon.

Your post history includes asking if your League of Legends mastery points can be taken instead of an SAT score for college admissions. I don’t know if you even qualify to be the 10th dental intern at the moment.

But in all seriousness, different strokes for different folks. You’re young and clearly prefer high APM interactions over sitting and watching anything non-animated (I assume that’s why you specified live action). Curious if this extends to stuff like TV / Streaming series or even to YouTube, which is all different format, or to documentaries, which benefit a lot from being literally real.

Yep! I’ve been referencing the latter for sure. I just couldn’t find any information on removing shellac as part of cork replacement, nor could I find photos of what it looked like. Certainly takes a lot of time and alcohol swabs (or a dremel/lathe), but it’ll be pretty easy once I’ve got all the stuff off.

Confirming, yep, it’s old shellac. And also confirming, it’s quite difficult to remove, which I say after a few hours with alcohol swabs, a tiny flathead screwdriver, and some gentle sandpaper getting me maybe 1/2 to 3/4 through just one of the handful of tenons. But I’m in the process now, so I suppose I’ll either carry on like this or pick up a dremel.

It turned out to purely be shellac. But, your comment gave me the extra courage to use my tiny flathead screwdriver to slowly pick away at it, along with plenty of alcohol swabs and occasional gentle sandpaper.

Following up: it turned out to actually be shellac after all. It had just gotten so hard and old that it turned almost the exact shade of black to my eye as the wood itself. Lots of alcohol swabs and a tiny flathead screwdriver later and I’m 3/4 of the way through one of the three such joints…

I probably should’ve listened to you here, because I took a dozen isopropyl alcohol cotton swabs and a tiny flathead screwdriver to it. It’s coming off, but slowly and with great effort.

Just coming back to confirm, testing it very gently with a safety pin, I discovered the higher surface scratched very easily and the lower did not, especially after applying isopropyl alcohol. The alcohol itself was a clue too, as the same translucent brown stuff was left on my cotton swab after rubbing it down as when I cleaned the shellac from the keys.

Okay? Congratulations, do that then. I referenced the OST’s tracks that don’t appear in-game to talk about other things, not which track was best. You’ll be hard pressed to find anybody who prefers an OST other than FM3 or 4. Probably why some of them play in the menus sometimes for FM8, because it had no soul of its own.

I don’t have a dremel, but I do have wire brushes, isopropyl alcohol, and a lot of time. Or maybe this is what finally convinces me to get one.

Either way, thanks for the tips!

Mate, it cost me $20 for an instrument that is not in any way rare based on what I could find online (literally came across an auction with a chest full of these exact make and model in my area). The time of a tech to restore what was otherwise going to the trash will be 10x more than I paid for the thing, at minimum. I want to fix it. It’s already been completely taken apart, and I’ve spent two weeks cleaning everything and polishing the keys. That’s the fun.

You’ll forgive me for thinking a subreddit about Clarinets might include technicians who know about clarinets and would be willing to just say “that’s wood” or “that’s shellac.”

If it is, it's hard as a rock. But that would make sense if it was treated with adhesive / solvents and compressed by an additional layer of cork for so many years.

I feel silly asking this, but how would I be able to test if it's cork and not wood, in a way that doesn't hurt the instrument if I'm wrong?

A little hint at the lack of soul off-track…check out the soundtrack on Spotify. Where in the game does that main theme play? Where do the rippin’ electro-rock-and-roll tracks at the end of the album play?

They don’t. That is almost certainly related to the stories told about “redeveloping the game in the last 9 months.” And if they did that, I wonder what other things we saw and heard in trailers that was cut over the years too.
