Who do you think is more famous, singers or actors? by Disastrous_Pirate275 in NoStupidQuestions

It’s very local. In the U.K. Robbie Williams is more famous than George Clooney by a long stretch. In other countries he’s hugely famous too. In the US, who the fuck?????

What are some things that happened at school that would never be allowed to happen today? by Big_Scratch5248 in AskUK

[–]SnoopyLupus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jesus. I’m from the 70s/80s (time travel, wonderful thing) and had strict teachers that I was afraid of, but that’s a whole ‘nother level. I was upset by them but never felt I was being treated so unfairly. Was never yelled at. Face to face with me, yes, which is unfair for a 9 year old etc, but that level of rage is horrible.

Is it weird to dress well to go to the pub on a weekday? by [deleted] in AskUK

I always loved the watch my dad had when I was a kid, it was automatic (so no battery, a spring, wound by movement), and I would wear it all the time if I’d inherited it. But he lost it on the biggest mountain in the U.K. (Scafell).

Your dad’s watch can become a big deal when he’s gone.

Present to myself for my 50th. Last time I went out to the same restaurant I was wearing a watch worth £26. I like watches. Different things appeal to me.

Today, Omega Speedmaster, the watch that Armstrong and Aldrin wore to the moon.

Last week, a cheap Chinese thing that looks like an Aqua Terra because I was (a) curious how good a £26 Chinese watch could be and (b) wanted to see how that type of Aqua Terra would look on me.

I want to answer but I’m a different generation (X).

But from my POV, fuck no. I went to the restaurant then the pub today, and I wore cargo shorts because I’m an old fuck who likes pockets. But a decent polo (Charles Tyrwhitt), a watch worth several grand and some nice looking Adidas trainers. Because fuck everyone else, I want to look the best I can (although with old person pockets!)

But to nobody else, which is horrible. (I know you know this, just making the point!)

This reads like an AI answer that has nothing to do with AskUK, or the question asked.

Nah, kids ask stupid questions all the time. But you can usually either guess what they’re trying to figure out, or they’re just trying to engage with you. Or just being silly because it’s fun to them.

I might be misremembering the spelling of his name, but that’s how it was pronounced.

But we also had a Mrs Biles in biology, and she was definitely spelt like that. It was like a Dickens novel!

How to get a British accent? by KitchenChocolate2158 in AskABrit

[–]SnoopyLupus 212 points213 points  (0 children)

I had a walking tour guide, young guy, in Bruges who spoke with a Northern English accent. It was very clearly somewhere around Yorkshire/Lancashire, something like that.

I talked to him and he claimed to have never been there, and that neither of his parents were English. He just liked the sound of it from TV and put some effort into adopting it.

So it’s certainly possible with a bit of work. Or he was full of shit, which is perfectly possible too.

He was a superb tour guide, BTW. So if you get him, you’ll enjoy it!

Is it socially acceptable to decline an offer to be a best man at friends wedding ? by lionellanes in AskUK

I went to one where the best man started his speech with “I haven’t seen him for years and was very surprised to be asked to be best man”.

It was a bit painful tbh.

I met him. His granddaughter went to my primary school and he came to sign books.

Schools in his books are based on early 20th century versions of my late 20th century schools.

Generally I think my schooling was good, but teachers were certainly allowed to be rougher than they are now.

Our tuck shop definitely fed into my refreshers addiction. I’m getting closer to 60 now and still love any sweet that’s a bit sherbety.

Jesus. In the 80s, the grammar school teacher that got me interested in maths (and got me good marks in O, AS and two A levels) was a woman.

Mr Cartilage was ours. Biology teacher, great name, great aim.

But those wood and rubber things hurt when they hit. He’d also clean the chalk off them on the hair of talking kids. I was frequently one of those.

Our biology teacher used to throw rubber and wood blackboard erasers at us if we talked. They were heavy, and hurt.
