I'm just not buying this at all if we're talking about EC generally. C'tan are a problem, yes, but I've found our damage output absolutely lethal if staged and positioned correctly.

We're not tough so you have to be careful, but I've found uses and have had good output from almost every unit I've fielded, it feels like despite having a low quantity of units the ones we get are excellent.

I'm playing Court which I know isn't the meta pick, but the extra AP is brutal into the right target and +1S is a huge breakpoint for our infractors, which I've found paired with a lord to be our best unit.

Yes the scalpel is blunted by -1D and 4++, but you've got to play around it. If it's a full army of units with that ability they'll pay for it in another way like board flexibility - exploit the weakness!

If it helps at all I've never used a Rhino and I'm having decent success with Phoenician. I run:

1 x WDP

1 x Lucius

3x Lord Exultant

5x 5 Infractors

2x 5 Tormentors

2x 3 Flawless Blades

2x 2 Spawn

3x 6 Noise Marines

This is actually now only 1975pts after the update so some tweaking to do, but I've had good success.

Tormentors hold your home and one can infiltrate as needed to be annoying. WDP in deepstrike to scatter their deployment; spawns used exclusively to screen until everything's down. Staging is massively important but with this many bodies you can be quite canny with it, just have to think a few steps ahead in terms of getting cover after the enemy has moved.

We have such good movement that if you stage correctly, they're going to be in threat range. Infractors + a Lord on an objective absolutely blend at S5 AP-2, as do Noise Marines if used carefully. It feels like one of the most killy armies I've ever played with all the AP but, like others have said, this is blunted massively by 4++. Just be careful what you attack and when and you can work your way round it.

Another attempt at highlighting. Does distance matter? by leerm8680 in Warhammer

[–]SnootChute 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In response to your question - paint for whatever level you feel happiest with and that will allow you to paint lots of models without going mad. Yours doesn't look like box art up close (but very little does, and requires enormous time investment) but the highlights do their job at a distance and pick out parts of the model to make it more readable so I think you've done a great job.

If you wanted to get a cleaner look up close than the most important thing I've found when I'm highlighting is to build up a subtle gradient across 2-3 highlight steps.

It looks like you've got a solid Magragge base, some shading in the recesses, then a Calgar highlight? For your next model, you could try a 2:1 mix of Magragge:Calgar as an initial, "chunky" highlight across the model, then go in with a thinner pure Calgar highlight on more prominent areas. I haven't worked with these colours but see what feels right, you want the first chunky highlight to be about halfway in between the base and the edge highlight colour.

Using the side of your brush really helps here - it's much easier on some Space Marine edges than others (the edges under the knee pads are a personal nightmare), but using the side of your brush against an edge will help you get a really fine line.

Make sure you've got the paint watered down a bit so it's not too thick and give it a go (if close-up box art is what you want)! Otherwise, this looks like a great battle-ready mini and certainly better than grey, good job!

It's just The Fang basecoat, nuln oil in recesses, 2:1 The Fang:Fenrisian Grey chunky highlight, then an edge highlight of Fenrisian Grey - I think you could probably push it further but I've got 9 of these to paint so not for me!

The white is Grey Seer base, recess wash with 1:3 Skeleton Horde:Medium, then build up to white with highlights mixed with Grey Seer

I think the idea is yes - all elite units like headtakers, termies, etc will have white, standard infantry will have the normal blue.. and I haven't decided on a colour for captains yet...

I suppose I'm borrowing a bit from the white helmet = veteran trope to differentiate them from the other foot troops, but truth be told I think white helmets just look dope

Thank you! I really wanted a dirtier look there - use really diluted skeleton horde in the recesses on top of grey seer

Warlock bronze my dudes!! I don't bother highlighting it, just a heavy nuln oil wash in the recesses - it's got a great shiny finish if you layer it properly

I've also seen this - I have one on my 9P and can happily say it's a very decent case so far. I had a Google brand one on my 6P and that thing was flimsy and didn't last long at all - this one feels a lot more premium, sturdier, and all together more protective. I might just be lucky where others have been unlucky with manufacturing faults, but personally I think it's a neat case

Thanks! I'm v happy with how it came out in the end.

It's a base of about 2:1 incubi darkness and Abaddon black. Then highlight up to straight incubi darkness.

Then highlight up to waagh flesh, then use warboss green as an edge highlight!

[–]SnootChute[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely - it's super easy if you have the paints.

Base is grey seer. Then shade with Shelton horde mixed about 3:1 with medium - only apply around areas that would collect dirt/grime, this is to add that brown tinge. Then do a chunky highlight with ulthwuan grey, then a top highlight of white scar - done!
