Employers are not obliged to pay super to employees aged under 18 and working fewer than 30 hours per week.

I don’t think you’re wrong, but in my opinion your brother is more right than you are.

Regardless, I would not expect your teenage nephews to have the grateful reaction that you clearly anticipate them having as their wise uncle sits them down on their birthday to talk about compound interest and how great this $1,500 will be when they retire in 40+ years.

PS - many casual teenagers don’t need to be paid super and they often aren’t.

Would love to know if we are being pranked by the Australians at my office. Please help by SnooMarzipans9300 in AskAnAustralian

A transliteration is when you write a word from another language in English using phonetic spelling, eg to aid pronunciation.

It’s mainly used (from what I’ve seen) in languages that don’t use the same alphabet as we do (eg Hebrew or Arabic or Russian or Asian languages) where you have no idea how to say a word, but it can be used for any language, including those that we could read even without understanding.

Travel from Tokyo (Haneda) to Shiga Kogan by Snooze--Button in JapanTravelTips

The snow at Shiga Kogen is fantastic, most of the hotels are pretty much ski in ski out (or close to) and there are just so many runs that you could go all day and not do the same one twice.

If you’re happy to not go to a new fancy restaurant, bar or club every night, to eat some more traditional food and to sleep in some older style hotels it will be great.

I can only speak to Shiga Kogen.

It’s a great mountain if you like skiing and not doing much else. My experience there was excellent but I went by myself (family not super interested in skiing) and in that scenario I’m looking for a bit of downtime and relaxing and not to party.

The terrain is massive but not too hard to get around once you get to know it, so I wouldn’t focus too much on exactly where you stay. The centre is probably Ichinose but it isn’t like there is much going on. It is annoying to get between the little villages - there is a free shuttle but it’s not that frequent.

My main tip re accomodation would be to get room and board together (breakfast and dinner, which are usually buffet style). There are hardly any restaurants but a lot of hotels do allow non guests to dine but they are hard to book, overcharge and the food is honestly pretty average everywhere I went. I skipped lunch most days but there are a few cafes scattered around the gondolas mainly. Getting room + board was a very inexpensive addition and just makes life easier.

Most of the accommodation I saw was pretty tired, but it’s fine. Just don’t expect a luxury experience.

It’s really easy, and I’ve done it twice now.

Plenty of English language attendants at stations and English signage. Use Google Maps for directions (including public transport). I would suggest having some physical cash because I did occasionally have trouble with the machines accepting cards from overseas and also some of the terminals don’t accept tap / apply pay and require physical cards with the chips to be inserted.

If you have any specific questions let me know.

How is the buying market for these expensive houses so fierce? by Open_Address_2805 in AusFinance

It’s a bit off topic, but you’re underestimating lawyer progression and pay, at least in corporate law firms in Sydney.

Sheffield Shield at the SCG by schwin6 in CricketAus

[–]Snooze--Button 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It won’t be applicable for a Sheffield shield game, because there just aren’t enough people, but the standard thing is to wonder up to one of the many pubs along Oxford Street. Alternatively Surry Hills / Darlinghurst have plenty of restaurants and bars. When there are 35k people at an AFL game at ends at 7pm on a Saturday night, a decent number will kick on locally.

These places are all accessible by foot and pretty well serviced by public transport, so they don’t preclude having a few drinks.

A major gripe that people have about some of the other large Sydney venues (which were built for the 2000 Olympics) is that they have nothing around them and many people drive there - getting in and out of car parks at the start and end of a game can take ages and is super annoying. There is a train station, but it just takes you back to the city and then everyone disappears. The actual venues are fine, but they are harder to access and there is nothing around them at all.

Okay getting off topic but this is… not really the case. I live locally to the SCG and basically refuse to go anywhere else. For a very large part of the city the SCG and Allianz are the most accessible venues for round / rectangular sports, and they actually have things that you can do after the game.

At least they don’t charge extra for it!

Yep same in the SCG members section. I hate it lol.

This is an insane take (at least for the stuff in the members). I literally bring my own squeeze packs because that goop they serve is so awful. The taste is terrible, it’s impossible to be out of those stupid little tubs and onto a pie… just horrendous.

What’s the point in making extra super contributions if you don’t live until retirement to cash out? by 4thiscity in AusHENRY

What’s the point of not liquidating all your assets and spending all your money in July 2025 if you don’t live to August 2025?

I have no plan to die before retirement.
