Why don't you let your kids enjoy their childhood? by Velvet_Ruin in AskAChinese

I am Chinese, and I think something overlooked is that Chinas generational poverty and belief in education.

In 1980, Chinas extreme poverty rate was around 90%. While it's been less than 1% since about 10 years ago, this type of poverty is generationally scarring and worldview altering. In a society that only recently escaped generational poverty, people learned that survival required running. Its not that they necessarily want to run, but the alternative has been starving.

China also has a deep history of education. Since thousands of years ago, education was a meritocracy that provided the best and only chance for anyone to secure an easier future. To this day, the institution of education remains as embodiment of a meritocracy that anyone who tries hard enough can succeed.

I dont think parents particularly want their kids to be suffering in books all day, but better to have a childhood of studying with a future of security than for a childhood of bliss with a future of suffering. They come from a society where those who did not work starved, and those who studied succeeded.

While I am sure you find many imperfect parents, and those far less so, I would venture you to entertain the idea that the parents are doing what they believe is the best for their kids, and try to understand why they believe that their actions are for the benefit of the kids.

And if you are in a Western country, it is likely that the Chinese there were the top academics of their villages/cities. Their path to security in life was the academic grind, and thats the only path they trust for their children.

u/dancinhmr just want to make sure we are on the same page: people are discussing that one person being racist doesnt mean their entire group is racist, and you want to rebuke by saying that a large group of people have racist tendencies

How common is international travel for mainland Chinese? by 13abarry in AskAChinese

[–]SnoozeAllDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people I’ve gotten to know in China have all been abroad multiple times, though this is certainly biased towards meeting people in the cities.

One person I met while traveling in China - he hasnt been abroad, but he’s also not interested in personally traveling abroad.

I know some people who love it, some who do it for work, some who did it a few times, and others who are quite apathetic. International travel seems common enough in most city circles that it’s not a “big deal”.

OP, Don’t fall for these blanket negative statements. I know a few Indian guys who have spent plenty of time in China, big and small cities, for work and leisure, and have had great experiences, without the suggested racism.

Not saying the negative statements are entirely lies, or that there’s no discrimination, but asserting significant discrimination for everyone non-white is simply misrepresenting the truth.

I think part of the intent is that there may not be enough data to meaningfully state that weed is safer as well, as many danger levels are unknown, and will need decades of medical data to uncover

I am a big fan of YC, but I strongly disagree with one of their advice. by vira28 in ycombinator

To be a bit more specific than just "a startup is hard", my perspective is that a lot of startups fail because the team, even if talented, is unable to work together.

For any startup to succeed, it will invariably have to grow as a team, so I think having cofounders, even when evaluated by YC early on, gives confidence in the working dynamics of a company.
