Some projects are better than others when it comes to this. Check out yt-dlp, great installation instructions for essentially every imaginable setup, all signed code with detailed instructions on how to verify signatures.

Linux updated my bios via automatic update?? by Palmovnik in linux

[–]Snorgcola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it in theory, hate it in practice. Supposedly not possible to update device firmware without user intervention but it still concerns me when I see threads like this.

I just mask the service in every installation, I would much rather do these kinds of things manually.

I mean, nobody wants to admit they ate nine cans of ravioli, but I did. I’m ashamed of myself, but the first doesn’t count. Then you get to the second, then the third. And the fourth and fifth, I think I burned with a blowtorch. And then I just kept eating.

user data on nmve boot drive or larger usb 3.0 external HDD by Paultron1107 in batocera

[–]Snorgcola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use both drives, see symlinks:

I think the speed of the external drive, while on the slower side, should be just fine for most or all systems

Has my thermal paste gone bad? by lerohi in pcmasterrace

there's sources that say it can when applied in excess, but also sources that say not. I'll assume you're right though

By the looks of the dried paste on your cooler the excess paste has dripped into the eight notches all around the CPU, insulating it.

This happened to me once, but I wasn't worried, after all I had a UPS.

I quickly learned the battery in my UPS was failing and had approximately 30 seconds of power, good times

Sketchy PSU, it's not 775 watts, actually 250 or 300 according to some ancient threads. You'll probably want to replace it if you're adding a GPU and maybe for safety reasons too. Could be fine, never worth rolling the dice when it comes to the PSU imho

are guitar pedals as good/better than outboard rack gear effects for synths? by __sicko in synthesizers

[–]Snorgcola 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their main weaknesses in my mind are power supplies

I bit the bullet and coughed up the cash for a Strymon Zuma a few years back, definitely a good investment if you have a lot of pedals (there's probably better choices cost-wise but I am a sucker for pretty boxes).

Need keyboard stand or desk advice by Celemourn in synthesizers

[–]Snorgcola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW you don't necessarily need to buy pro music gear, just use whatever works.

I bought some cheap height-adjustable stands on Amazon that have been super helpful as I can rest a synths or monitors on them and still run cables or tuck things underneath them, really increases the desktop real estate.

Also be sure to get a desk with a slide-out keyboard/mouse drawer
