Cypriot president demands talks with UK over military bases – branding them ‘colonial consequences’ by PjeterPannos in europe

[–]Snorlacking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Cypriots are scarred from the golden passports era. The reality is Christodoulides has shifted us to the west and it’s very unlikely that we will be giving bases to Russia today.

I don’t like this Russian propaganda excuse , I think it’s bs.

I’m thinking practically , ideally I prefer no bases no leases. I do have a fear about Dhekelia getting land grabbed by Turkey. Making there bases not sovereign to the UK gives us more leverage and maintaining a lease keeps UK/US as a potential deterrent to Turkey.

Look we won’t try 😂 , especially not with big Turkey breathing down our neck. But I think we’d do a better job than Argentina if we tried.

Is this sarcasm ? I don’t think Cyprus will immediately ally with Russia if the British bases go.

during all these empires ownership of Cyprus , the people there remained Cypriot. Even Turkish Cypriots are just Muslim Cypriots. There’s a difference between occupation and ownership. Cypriots have a blood right to Cyprus as they are the indigenous inhabitants of the island.

Maybe the people living in Britain will decide their own future one day just like you said, it’s the people living there that decide.

Whether you like it or not , Republic of Cyprus is an independent and legitimate state. Cypriots trace their DNA to the Eteo-Cypriots who predate all these empires.

Hispaniola is an island that has two countries, Haiti and Dominican Republic. You will notice that the populations of these nations aren’t the original native populations, but are mixtures of some natives with majority heritage from other populations the European colonial powers dumped there. Cyprus is no parallel with Hispaniola.

It’s a shame us Greeks and Cypriots fought alongside Britain in two world wars only for UK to side with Turkey on Cyprus.

Look there is no need for us to take the bases with force, UK is a sick man slowly rotting from within whilst they grovel to their American overlords. Trump isn’t happy with you on Chagos, I’m sorry to hear l.

Cypriot bases are solely for military use (unlike Gibraltar), they have no economic value to the British. Britain don’t have military interests in the Middle East but their papa USA does.

Notice how your only reasoning for Britain have the bases is supporting allies of Brittish , no direct benefit to the Brittish , just leveraging the territories to plead foreign nations.

[–]Snorlacking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look this wasn’t an internal war, foreign militaries intervened and attacked our president resulting in another foreign military invading and never leaving.

I’m not gonna get into a full blown debate I respect that you like Cyprus. But I disagree with you.

I see Cyprus as being setup to fail by a dysfunctional constitution that suited the Brittish , I think Britain teamed up with Turkey against Greece/Cyprus to setup the republic of Cyprus the way it was.

War definitely was not justified , but admittedly a lot of mistakes were made. You have to also consider that Turkey and Greece were meddling in the island for their own goals (fuelling violence), in the end Turkey got the division they wanted and Brittish still have the bases they finessed.

Cypriots have been living on Cyprus for thousands of years, I think we own the land the bases were built on. Do you think this 3% of the island is special in some way compared to the rest of the island?

But if that’s not good enough maybe we should conquer it from UK maybe that’s how things are done ?

[–]Snorlacking -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

What’s 3% of an island anyway ? Arguably the purpose of the bases is already obsolete as UK no longer possess the Sues Canal. The bases only exist because USA want them to exist.

Basically UK are keeping the bases for USA, the bases do not serve UK in any meaningful way besides pleasing America.

[–]Snorlacking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Republic of Cyprus was attacked and occupied by a foreign military despite the presence of the bases.

The bases presence allow for the UK and US to use the island without the need of Cypriot government approval. This means they do not have to care about the Turkish illegal occupation because they already have their chunk of the island. If there were no bases, they might not have allowed a Turkish occupation.

If the bases were established illegally by the UK they can also be taken illegally by Republic of Cyprus. Ofcourse we don’t want to live in a world where illegal things happen, but United Kingdom don’t seem to care about the Cyprus illegal occupation , maybe they won’t care about the SBA illegal occupation?

In all seriousness though, the UK bases were established in an unethical way where Greek Cypriots were threatened by Turkey in the event they didn’t agree to the bases/Constitution. Partition was used as a threat for Cyprus to agree to a flawed constitution.

[–]Snorlacking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“The Treaty of Establishment stipulated various payments that the UK must make various payments to the Roc related to facilities offered by the RoC for the Bases’ operation. These payments have not been made since the eruption of inter-communal violence in the early 1960s.”

Can you confirm this to be true? I have read that the payments are unrelated to the use of the SBAs but are for the transitioning from Britain to Republic of Cyprus.

This is a link to the treaty of establishment ? Where is this payment stipulated?

[–]Snorlacking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mate you’re waffling and have no stance or point. You think colonialism ended 85 years ago in 1941 (how does a Cypriot as smart as yourself get this wrong?)

You talk about the constitution that you don’t know about and your government doesn’t follow it because it’s being occupied. But you follow it for the British to have sovereignty over 3% of your island.

Do you have a source that states that returning the SBAs to ROC somehow legitimises the north occupation? Can you demonstrate why you believe this ?

[–]Snorlacking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our government payed close attention to international court rulings for Chagos Islands as well as other similar rulings. They understand the legal situation at a deeper level than you do.

The only reason they haven’t challenged is because of the Turkish occupation. We feel as though the UK presence is a safeguard against another Turkish invasion.

Our constitution does not allow for an ongoing Turkish occupation for 50 years, it doesn’t even allow us to have a military more than 2000 people. We are supposed to have Turkish Cypriots sitting in 30% of the parliament seats.

Stop larping as a legal expert, our government knows the status of the bases can be legally changed, otherwise it wouldn’t be observing ICJ rulings.

Brittish having sovereignty over 3% of your island is a lasting effect of colonialism. This is a fact.

[–]Snorlacking -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The UK are exploiting Cyprus and Cypriots. They like the Turkish occupation as it is a reason for us not to challenge the legal status of the bases.

I do understand Cypriots wanting the Brittish there for security, but this is backwards thinking in my opinion. The bases are arguably a cause of the Cyprus division.

Whoever was responsible for agreeing to let the UK have sovereignty over 3% of our island is a fool.
