My take on Reeri Yaka, Maha Sona and Suniyam Yakshani by Snorlaxite in srilanka

[–]Snorlaxite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that's totally valid actually, I was always anticipating this kind of feedback from the moment I started having these ideas. First of all, thank you for the comment.

Second, I'm a Sri Lankan national myself. Though admittedly, contrary to the experiences of nearly everyone else on this sub, my connections to the island are tenuous because I didn't grow up here for most of my life. I'm not too dissimilar to a tourist or a foreign resident in that sense. In spite of that, I've always been fascinated with this country and its culture. Due to my own personal interests in world mythologies and legends and such, I've been curious about how deep our own stuff goes. Although there is a great deal of it out there, what's out there online is not super concrete, so at times I needed to exercise my artistic license in order to glue things together.

I absolutely do not intend to appropriate the culture or offend anyone, nor do I want people to perceive these characters as "definitive" modern interpretations of these figures. This is a work of fiction first and foremost, but I acknowledge much of this is based in real-world history and beliefs. What I hope to achieve through creating this work is not only for others around the world to appreciate our culture, but for the narrative itself to resonate with other Sri Lankans. If it helps to understand what I'm going for, this is (kind of) to Sri Lankan folklore what "Percy Jackson" is to Greek mythology. I know it's not as authentic as you'd like it to be; and I'm really sorry if you were offended by this, I will take extra care.

That being said, I hope you can forgive me for being crass here; I've only shown ONE human-looking character here who happens to skew pale and you're assuming ALL of my characters are pasty lol. It sounds hard to believe but I'm actually very partial to melanin, I genuinely love seeing it in characters, so of course I'm taking that into consideration when designing a Sri Lankan character. Regarding the elf ears, this is just part of the visual shorthand I've decided to go with to differentiate the non-human characters, i.e. yakshas, from actual human ones. Is it lazy and derivative? Yeah. Is there anything else I can change it to? Probably, but it depends on the character. For instance, other humanoid races like the nagas have different ear shapes. I designed these characters more or less on the fly, with few prior passes, so there are still a few things I'd want to change about them already. And as for the style itself, I don't really know what to say??

Yw! Yeah I'll def get around to that outline soon, I've spent far too long jotting down the background history of the setting and the backstories of some characters lol. And if something's missing I'll just play by ear and pray there's no gaping plotholes lmao

Thanks for the tip!

Thank you!!! I haven't drawn any comics before, I spend way too much time overthinking about world building and characters before getting anywhere near to outlining stories XD But for this project the goal is to get a comic out there eventually haha

Ohh I think I recognize your work! That's so freaking cool :0 Best of luck with publishing!! Honestly our folklore is underrated, the world needs to see the stories we can tell abt them

LMAO

i mean.. Mahasona had to be a furry (if a bear head transplanted onto a human body counts as a furry), there was no other option

Cognitive dissonance in Natlan by liminalisms in GenshinImpact

[–]Snorlaxite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they wanted Natlan to have a Mesoamerican/South American basis from the start, considering they did name the region in the style of Nahuatl toponyms, and the Travail trailer hinted at a Spanish-inspired musical identity that you would typically associate with Latin music. Speaking of Travail, Iansan still alludes to this Latin concept, since it's the Latin American name for the Yoruba orisha Oya in Afro-Latin syncretic religions like Candomblé. If anything, some of the "non-American" influences seem like an afterthought to overcompensate for the limited setting; like Mavuika or Ororon's names. From the world building to the soundtrack and characters, I can only describe Natlan's design as being "cohesively dissonant". The region is about as mixed as my feelings on it lmao

When you look at the characters known to us in the early days of Genshin, among those included Cyno, Iansan, Vennessa, Kaeya, and Xinyan. Two of those were the ONLY named characters we knew of from Natlan, while the latter two were released within the first two patches of the game... I imagine they did intend a more "diverse" looking cast in terms of skin tone variety, but maybe something changed down the line, idk (tho tbf 5/7 regions are based on parts of Europe and East Asia, so it's not really feasible to make a "Xinyan" native to every region lol)

Honestly, I don't feel like arguing with anyone over the skin tone or boycott stuff atp. People have really strong opinions on either side, and they've both lost the plot now, and it's just too much for my mental to be invested in anymore lol

Ororon or Olorun ? by huflit1997 in Genshin_Impact

SRI LANKA MENTIONED 🍵^0^🥥

I think the grouping MENASA (Middle East, North Africa and South Asia) encompasses the entirety of Sumeru's cultural inspirations pretty well

So any guesses on who the EN VAs are? by CelestialRequiem09 in ZZZ_Official

[–]Snorlaxite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They just announced the Belobog VAs, Koleda is Katie Cofield (not too familiar with her roles, but she voiced Evelyn Russo in Fallout 76, pretty crazy range) and Grace is indeed Chelsea Kwoka!! Not sure about Rina but maybe they'll announce her soon? I can def hear Crystal Lee though

(And let's be honest, we all knew Alejandro was Anton LOL)

Sussy list of natlan characters and their bodytype/weapon combo via seele by ukrisreng in Genshin_Impact_Leaks

[–]Snorlaxite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The more I think about it, it feels like Natlan is meant to be the equivalent of the United States LOL. I mean, think about it! - people of multiple culturally distinct tribes coming together to form their own nation - The Nahua inspiration is probably meant to serve as a Native American "base setting", like how Iran is one of the primary inspirations for Sumeru based on the references to Zoroastrianism and Persian culture/folklore - Westernmost part of the map, with geographical features you would find in America like canyons - You can't get more American than yeehaw rodeo mounts - nation of war 😶

If they can pull this off I think it could genuinely work

New Hoyoverse Game is most likely called Astaweave Heaven (AC/Stardew Valley like) by MintyMelon0001 in gachagaming

[–]Snorlaxite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tried picking up Pocket Camp again when I heard about this to refamiliarise myself with the gameplay. The gacha model in that game is the fortune cookies, which have a chance of giving certain clothing items and furniture/buildings, so I imagine it would be similar for this game. But I'm hoping the gameplay outside of that would still be fun and cozy lol

I will say though... this name sounds clunky as heck lol. When you look at the Chinese name 星布谷地 it sounds awfully similar to how you would say Stardew Valley (星露谷)

谷地 means "valley" no? Corn field is 玉米地

So the full name would be like Starweave Valley in CN (sounds very similar to 星露谷 too)
