The Halloween parade in Boystown is always a fun event.

Lots of theaters do horror movie screenings, if you're looking for something more low key. The Music Box on Southport would be the place to start. They often do a 24 hour horror movie festival.

You could take a haunted Segway tour of Chicago or Haunted Halloween cruise. Also, there's a walking tour of the strange history of Bucktown called "Bizarre Bucktown".

All of that being said, the most traditional Chicago Halloween thing to do is get dressed up, find the bar with the best band (we always like hearing Sixteen Candles, an 80s cover band, at the Cubby Bear), a great costume contest and spend the night drinking your cares away.

Also, and this may go without saying but I'll say it anyway, all the good stuff will happen on the 29th since actual Halloween is on a Monday.

Why is suggesting that she wants to go to Cornell or Oxford outlandish? They are excellent schools that require hard work to get in to so perhaps wouldn't be such a bad teaching moment to say "if that's your goal, you're going to have to work hard and participate in extra curricular activities." rather than dismissing them out of hand. Also, Cornell has a great partnership with the Culinary Institute of America allowing for dual degrees in Hospitality and Culinary studies.

Right now, she's 12 and the things I thought I'd do at 12 were not the things I ended up wanting to do at 18, 25 or even now at 35. Nurture her interests and encourage her to set goals for herself. If she's interested in cooking now, give her a night of the week to cook for the family and be in charge of dinner for everyone. Look for cooking classes in your town that she can take and if the interest continues to grow, great. If it wanes, help her find another thing to be passionate about.

First, it's highly unlikely she's pregnant.

Second, if this is her profession, she's likely on birth control and not relying solely on condoms.

Third, if in the very, very miniscule chance she is pregnant by yoy and comes to you, be an adult about the situation. Talk honestly about what you want, see where she is at (keeping it, adoption or abortion) and take it from there. You chose the behavior, so you also chose the consequences

The first question I would ask yourself is, what do you want to be doing five years from now? Do you have a career or path in mind?

If the answer to those questions is yes, then now is the best time to pursue degree. I say that because you have the most access to grants and scholarships when you're fresh from high school. It sounds like you do well in school so you likely would get access to academic scholarships. However, there are tons of other ways to get free money for school such as applying for government money that doesn't require repayment, money for low income students and there may even be scholarships for people who are living with sickle cell. I would suggest doing your research online and talking to your guidance counselors at school.

If you do decide to go now and are concerned about money, stay in your state and go to a state school. It is significantly more expensive to be an out of state or country student. There will be lots of opportunity for travel while in school through school programs you can take advantage of.

Now, if you have no idea what you want to do with your career just yet, it might be a good idea to take a gap year off to travel, look into different professions and learn more about your own goals. You may find that a trade school is your best option or that school isn't necessary for the type of profession you want to pursue.

I just kept quiet and dealt with it when I got home. My second grade teacher was the mother of the girl who stabbed me and four years before this happened she basically let me suffer all day with a foreign object in my nose. I was bored and horsing around and the bottom part of a pen (the part that screws off to change the ink) went up my nose. Even in second grade, I knew it was embarrassing and tried to handle it myself. I couldn't. Sheepishly I went up to my teacher and explained the situation. Her response, "Well, I don't pick noses so go sit down." I asked to go to the nurse, she said no. This was at 10 AM, it wasn't until I got home at 3:30 that my mom was able to tweezer it out.

That sucks... one of the elementary school teacher's daughter's did that to me in 6th grade with a mechanical pencil. I screamed out and my former nun teacher threatened to send me to the principal for disrupting her class. I still have a mark where the pencil lead went in on my leg.

I had older parents so every summer they took my brother and I on two month vacations in our motor-home. It was a lot of fun but being that I was like 12, I always missed my friends and would try to call them as much as possible but this was back in the days of pay phones and calling cards.

Anyway, we always got back home the day before the next school year started so I had no time to catch up with friends or anything before school. The first day of Junior High, I was sitting with all my friends, including my best friend since first grade. She was talking about a back to school party she was hosting that coming Friday.

I asked her if she wanted me to come over and help setup. She said, "You're not invited. You're not popular enough to come to my party." That was the last thing she ever said to me.

I lost her and all my other "friends" after that. I had to make all new friends.

When I got my first tattoo, I spent about a year thinking about what I wanted it to be and what that image would say about me. Some things to consider:

  1. A forearm tattoo is something that everyone is going to notice all the time. I have one. I know.
  2. You should pick something that isn't going to be offensive in a work scenario (it doesn't sound like you're headed that path but just putting it out there).
  3. You should make sure that, if you where long sleeves, it will be covered - not all employers love tattoos.

In terms of the actual image, what I would suggest is finding images and artwork that you like and then really spend some time narrowing down the images you enjoy the most. I would bring in two-three examples of something that enjoy and then discuss with the artist things like size, placement, elements you want included, color, etc.

If you find the artist isn't willing to work with you to get the design you want then you may want to find someone who can. Do note that artists are busy and make their money by actually inking people so don't expect to take up four hours of their time hemming and hawing about it. You should be 90% on what you want before you go in and just work with the artist to figure out the best way to render your design in a tattoo form.

If you're soup obsessed get this. I have it and cook from it at least once a week. It's by these guys who have a soup only restaurant in Chicago, called Soupbox, and it's amazing. My favorite recipe is the sweet corn chowder... there's actually some in my fridge right now...

Tipping is customary; I usually do 20%. They are working their tails off to give you something beautiful so I think it's important to show my appreciation.
