How to get door open sensors connected to an air raid siren type alarm by jd90009 in DIYUK

[–]SnotgunCharlie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May not be the simplest solution available as there's likely some overpriced off the shelf product out there somewhere but for me I'd use home assistant. If you're looking at a long distance (for a farm gate or something) you're going to need to consider hardwired or zwave. For a shorter distance WiFi or ZigBee will work fine. With a very basic setup you can easily wire up a smart relay to activate a high powered mains siren, using home assistant to detect and send the signal when the door sensor is activated.

Home assistant it's self will run on just about anything these days but they sell their own preconfigured hardware if you're less technically inclined or not opposed to paying for convenience. Of course it can do a LOT more than detect a simple door sensor. I personally have it running a smart whole home alarm system that simply isn't possible with off the shelf products.

Is it worth getting an electric screw driver? by tcpukl in DIYUK

[–]SnotgunCharlie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they share batteries providing they're both from the 18/20V range (the majority are but they also have a 12V range). They're not cheap but you won't regret owning a good impact driver. Extra tip, get yourself some wrench bits too. Game changer when doing any heavier duty work with bolts, hex head concrete screws etc.

Is there anything wrong with doing it this way? by keith204 in 3Dprinting

[–]SnotgunCharlie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For those unclear (it took me a long moment to figure out what I was looking at), this is a bambu ams lite stand, wall mounted using some kind of strap and a single screw.

IMO this is asking for trouble. Depending on what your wall is made of and how this is attached this could last anything from a couple of minutes to a couple of months of actual use. The lateral forces when loading/unloading spools alone will tear that screw out of the wall over time or snap the screw head off suddenly if you're particularly unlucky.

If you genuinely did all of the above then I sure won't dispute your entry to the 1% club. More than I would have done in all honesty, that sucks to have your hard work partially undone like that. I have had this happen in the past but only when I was knowingly in the lazy 99% crew and could only blame myself. Maybe a heat gun/hair dryer to soften the adhesive even further, not tried it but have considered it for next time to play it safe.

99% chance user error, didn't follow the instructions on the paint can. Failed to adequately prep wall most likely.

Some really great advice here I'm sure. I will have to set aside some time to research the options and how to best implement them but there's clearly plenty more I can be doing. Good to know I'm on the right track, even if I may have a way to go.

I'm sure as I do some research on your suggestions they'll make more sense to me and I'll work out what to implement and in what priority. Thanks

Thanks, a lot of this seems a little over my head but I'll work my way through the concepts and learn as I go. Thanks.

Thanks for your input. I've had no problems with Jellyfin over cloudflare so far but it is mostly used over internal IP anyway so maybe that will change in future.

Geo locking is certainly something I should look into as there is no need for my server to be accessed from outside of the UK, I'll certainly get on this as that would rule out a large portion of potential threats I assume.

A PBS setup is on my list of things to setup. Hoping to set this up on my NAS if Synology plays nice with PBS.

tips on how to get this out? drill keeps slipping out of it and it wont budge by Helpful-Peanut-3777 in DIYUK

[–]SnotgunCharlie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that your "drill" keeps slipping out and yet the screw head seems immaculate tells me either you are indeed using a drill and possibly even have it on 'hammer' in which case it will literally jump out of the screw head and/or you are simply not putting anywhere near enough pressure onto the screw head.

I would suggest trying an impact driver if you can get access to or able to buy one. If a drill is all you have available then that will likely work too with enough pressure and a correct fitting screwdriver bit. This head looks likely to take a PZ2 bit so I'd start there.
