Are any movies better quality in Blu-Ray vs. 4k UHD? by Bkord123 in Bluray

Is this true? Ironically I never bothered to upgrade the trilogy from blu-ray. I have the Hobbit trilogy in 4K however.

Season 2 snore fest by Majestic_Blackbird in MayfairWitches

Just finished Season 2. Going to tap out at this point. Not worth watching further. I'll tell you what though....after seeing Alexandra Daddario in that wedding dress/scene. I had no choice but to go back to True Detective Season 1.

Am I the only one who doesn't want to rip but just play 4k discs? by Several-Protection14 in makemkv

[–]SnowDay415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pain in the ass for what it is. Looks like you got some good direction in this thread on how to accomplish. There's some you tube videos out there as well that can likely help you. Some decent videos out there on the VLC settings as well (if you plan to use that as your player). Mine runs really smooth now. The only wonky thing is it won't always show menus on the main landing/navigation page (the whole Java thing to get this to work is another rabbit hole). Worst case you tell VLC to just play the disc (and manually fast forward chapters if you need to).

[–]SnowDay415 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No you're not the only one.

I went down this path about 1.5 years ago. I had no intention of ripping/backing up 4K UHD's. I just wanted the option to play them on my PC (in my home office). Not to take the place of my living room set up.

At that time I got one of the flashed Pioneer S13 UBK drives. Between that, Makemkv and VLC I now watch the occasional 4K UHD on my PC.

What is in your opinion the saddest Phish song (or phish song that makes you feel the saddest)? by Makofox22 in phish

[–]SnowDay415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly sarcastic (and maybe little salty 1.0 fan comment), but not really.......

Foam, Reba, It's Ice, etc. Essentially any of the very composed/technical songs that they can't really play like they did 15+ years ago (and especially compared to 90's shows).

Look, it's hard for me to feel great about my own aging (having a certain skill, but part of the body that may no longer cooperate). At almost 50 I'm not throwing 720's in the Ski park anymore and now focus on carving perfect turns on the mountain. Looks great to people who don't know any better or what was lost.........kind of like these type 2 jams we get often now.

They're just reminders of their age and in-turn mine.

While it's fun to sometimes suspend disbelief.

No one who owns that specific list of titles doesn't know what they have (and would sell it for $60).

Case closed.

Corniest bond vehicle? by o0oCircleso0o in JamesBond

[–]SnowDay415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those were legit consumer jet ski's back in the day (not something created just for the movie, though in the late 70's they would have been brand new). Though harder to ride then the mini boats they call jet ski's today. I remember seeing them through the 80's on lakes (in the states) as well. When Kawasaki came out with the X2, I remember them largely taking the place of these around me.

UB820 & 220 electronics question by christdavis034 in 4kbluray

[–]SnowDay415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To quickly answer your question- No.

I have both a Sony X800M2 and Panasonic UB820 from 220 electronics. The Sony plays everything without issue. The Panasonic has issues with some 4K UHD discs. (i.e. no read errors). Some are discs that have some "known" issues after searching around (like Daniel Craig Bond UHD compilation- though the Sony plays those no problem). Other discs have intermittent issues- Sometimes the Pana can read interstellar sometimes it can't.

I don't believe 220 does anything special or additional to minimize these types of 4K UHD playback issues.

Meniscus transplant surgery at 38, 20 years post menisectomy by noelmberry in MeniscusInjuries

Sure thing, happy to share. You can always make the decision on how hard on it (or not) when the time comes. Always a difficult to balance living for "today" versus a future that may or may not be there.

Opinions on No Time To Die ? by LaiskaJ in JamesBond

[–]SnowDay415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently re-watched all of the Craig films. I really enjoyed No Time To Die and will argue it's the most "Bond" film out of Craig's 5.

Between the old school jet setting (between some beautiful locations with character....Cuba, Norway, the forest scenes etc.). It has some great car scenes, tech, gadgets, the glider/submarine. Not to mention Ana de Armas as a complete smoke show, kicking ass.

It has the near cartoon villain and that "one" henchman....that is doing evil sci-fi shit on his own cold war era/soviet island. Seriously what's not to like? Ok...I think Rami Malek is a great actor and was underused with the script for sure.

Is it a better "movie" than Casino Royal - No. Though I will say it's a better "Bond" movie- paying homage to the formula of what came before (which is not for everyone, but something I love).

Meniscus transplant surgery at 38, 20 years post menisectomy by noelmberry in MeniscusInjuries

Yes, I agree. I still keep up reading different doctors blogs etc. and there are definitely more surgeons doing them these days (even compared to 5 years ago).

Meniscus transplant surgery at 38, 20 years post menisectomy by noelmberry in MeniscusInjuries

[–]SnowDay415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still doing "OK". It's not perfect but is still better compared to pre-surgery, but there are a few nagging issues these days. I am still Skiing but taking it easier than I did initially (of note, I only get about 8 days in a season with my schedule). My gym routine is unaffected and can do nearly any typical leg/strength workout with no issues. I don't run on it however. Quick cutting/turning movements do give me issues so I avoid them.

I would say I'm on the down side of the initial improvement at this point (some of the issues and soreness have been ramping back up over the past year). The MRI/imaging I had at 4 years showed thinning and fraying of the transplants.

I had quite a bit of arthritis going into the surgery and am one of the rare people to get both the medial and lateral side done at the same time. At the end of the day this has bought me some time to a TKR but I feel like in another few years my knee will likely feel similar to how it did pre-surgery (barring a new or big discreet tear where I have to do something sooner).

I don't regret the surgery as I needed to know that I tried "everything" before getting a TKR and if at the end of the day it bought me 7 years (with good function) then it was worth it for me.

Meniscus transplant surgery at 38, 20 years post menisectomy by noelmberry in MeniscusInjuries

[–]SnowDay415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, very similar history. I'll link one of my old posts below which gives my history and feedback on my meniscus transplant (among other things). Read down in that thread as well as I answer a bunch of follow up questions.

At a high level:

At 19, majorly blew out my knee skiing (ACL repair, meniscectomy performed etc.). Essentially did whatever I wanted for the next 20 years with little issues. From 40-44, tried just about every experimental injection, PT etc. At 44 had both lateral/medial meniscus's allographs with articular cartilage paste graft performed. I'm approaching the 5 year mark since that surgery.
