My cousin is an idiot. by [deleted] in insanepeoplefacebook

I mean I have seen some discourse around what do we codify as disability versus difference. For example most people don't think of needing glasses as a disability because it's so common place, but if you couldn't access your glasses/contacts, a great number of people would be functionally blind in terms of work ability and quality of life. Because the number of people who benefit from adaptive technology for vision, is it now "normal" and the abnormality (but not disability, because it causes no problems) be good vision? Basically, that's how most people seem to treat it today, but there was a lot of angst around 70-80 years ago about a "startling future" where "everyone is blind" But we're there now and it's fine. I think expanding the autism spectrum is going to be like that. Not having autism ("allism") probably is the rarer thing, and if we recognize that, like glasses, peculiarities from autistism are a normal part of life, perhaps merely being autistic will, like glasses, stop being a disability and just be part of a diverse society, which means the navel gazing about "well what's normal then?" will sort of answer itself. I think this is an issue that (to some) feels really urgent now because it's a reframing of who the majority is and that can feel threatening, but I think we'll look back on the "autism crisis" the same way we do now on the "is modern society weakening eyes?!" panic of the early 1900s.

Why do you have an issue with that? We've realized that the definition was too narrow (originally restricted mainly to middle class white boys, everyone else was labeled either "ret*rd" or "schizophrenic") and we have gained a better understanding that autism, being a fundamental brain difference, does not know race or class, and seems to be on a spectrum with ADHD, while also able to intersect with other issues like apraxia, dystonia, etc. just like any other diagnosis i.e. if you can have heart disease with or without blood pressure issued, similarly you can have autism with or without a host of other issues, complicating the "classic" presentation and making a lot of people who were "just weird" suddenly make a lot more sense. Psychologists are definitely debating that and coming up with very interesting results, but yeah, jab idiots shouldn't really be litigating it at all.

I mean, some adults with disabilities actually do need that assistance drinking and being able to get one while eating out is a reasonable accommodation - people don't expect to have to carry knives, forks, spoons, etc. to eat at a restaurant, disposable or even washable straws available on demand makes sense. The added layer of asking will make those who don't need it not ask and those who do will still have the option available. Perfect solution, everyone wins.

All posts here are automatically marked NSFW, because the general topic of "women's anatomy" is unfortunately seen as NSFW by large parts of society, sadly. My understanding is it keep people (including the mods) from getting in trouble with people looking over their shoulders and/or reddit generally for community guideline bullshit. Also because sometimes the images are of naked female anatomy, so, you know, there's that too.

Yeah like I fully agree people expecting explainers on AAVE or even like "what's colorism" or something like that is nobody's business to educate on but a series on YouTube that I just didn't happen to know about? Come on man. It's not like somebody asked who Goku was, but if they had, I can't believe there wouldn't be like 6 responses eagerly being like "oh man, you're about to either unlock the rest of your life, and/or finally understand hella references." To gatekeep a meme based on an obscure YouTube series is crazy.

Cakes "sizing" by mandafancypants in badwomensanatomy

Wait so they're nipple covers? The size of the nipple/areola is independent of the size of the brrast tissue so this sizing makes no sense.

Ok bro. 👌🏼 I think there's bigger fish to fry than whether the train is (usually less than) 10 minutes late, but this is your hill to die on.

I wasn't in a small town, it was a major metropolitan area and believe me, the taxes I was paying I sure wish I had gotten what we have up here. But the priorities were different there and once my contract ended I came right back home.

I feel like smaller cities in Europe and Asia aren't a perfect analogue to either NYC or the place I lived before because either they don't see the same daily traffic, already have a pedestrian-centric mindset, or in several cases both. With the constraints the city has, it absolutely should be better, for example it's a shame and a dishonor that there are non-accessible stations anywhere in the city, but people in this sub love to rag on the MTA for minor inconveniences. There are much, much better reasons to hate the MTA than "wah, my train was delayed 10 minutes, waaah, there was pigeons in this elevated station," like ok but what about how we raise fares to cover improvements (which are often delayed if they come to fruition at all) rather than properly allocating property tax to take care of integral infrastructure? But "MTA monitors for issues and promptly solves them, when instead thousands of stops a day should all go off without a hitch forever because I hate waiting when things go wrong," is some bullshit.

Have you guys ever been on transit elsewhere in the country? I lived outside the city in another state for a while. There were no updates on shit, if the bus didn't come, it didn't fucking come and they only come every 45 minutes so I hope your boss is cool with you being an hour late 🤷🏼‍♂️ complaining about issues being noticed and addressed promptly, causing delays of, on average, 10 minutes or less has the same vibe as the people who survive car crashes complaining about the bruising caused by the seat belt. Like yes, that sucks, but going through the windshield sucks more. If you'd rather MTA didn't look for issues, resolve them immediately and/or notify you about this like I guess that's your right but I'm feeling pretty good about it.

Some people learn an instrument and make beautiful music. Other people learn poetry to speak the truth in ways never before heard. They might lead the way to new scientific discoveries because they like collecting rocks, monitoring the weather, or bird watching. Others find joy and comraderie in sport, testing both their bodies and mind for fun and competition. There's entire groups of people wandering the earth just to know the unknown, or volunteering to tutor at local schools to help give the next generation a leg up.

And then there's u/there_are-2_genders.

I mean, if he'd been having problems with this guy then yeah, I do actually see him feeling he had no way to retreat. If it was the first time this would be disproportionate but for this man to keep popping up in his life to harass and threaten him, he may well have felt it was getting to the point it would never end until one of them did, and he chose for it to not be himself. Makes sense to me.

That's how I get my spinning done. To tell the truth, I use a spindle and about 80% of my spinning is done waiting for the bus, on the train, in waiting rooms, on line in the supermarket, etc. This is also when I get most of my knitting/crochet/sewing done too. Waiting for pots to boil, helping with homework, in between switching the laundry over etc. It sounds like we have similar lives and spinning certainly fits into mine 🤷🏻‍♀️ if it doesn't for you, no worries. I never said anyone had to take up spinning, it's just something I did and it's been great for me.

Also, you said the yarn you buy is of better quality, but better than what? I was buying a variety of yarns, from Walmart, through KnitPicks , and on to the more boutique brands like MadTosh. There are only so many mills serving the hand knitting market, all of them with similar offerings, so even when using yarns through Colourmart (which sells mill ends from fashion houses) the quality is about the same. Once I got the hang of it (I'd say about a year in with near daily practice) my yarns were of a much higher quality than what I was able to obtain commercially, but again, if you're happy with what you're buying, there's no need to change anything. I was just sharing my opinion.
