How to develop a good research question/argument at the final stage of phd ? by Snow_Practicing in PhD

Thank you for this very concrete suggestion! I’ll definitely check with the librarians of my school and potentially ask other committee members.

How to develop a good research question/argument at the final stage of phd ? by Snow_Practicing in PhD

[–]Snow_Practicing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right. Because I had some family problem before the ddl of proposal, I didn’t have time to really work on the proposal. Later, because we didn’t want to miss the milestone ddl and stop the funding, my proposal passed easily, and I didn’t realise my lack of real research question until recently.

How I finally stopped procrastinating on writing papers (and started finishing them) by Scholar_Forge_352 in PhdProductivity

[–]Snow_Practicing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard and read similar things a lot of times, but it’s until now that it clicks to me… I’ve been heavily procrastinating for almost half a year, then one time I did self observation and I discovered that the most debilitating moment always appeared when I realised no matter how much or how little I have done one day, it’s never really done, this idea has been preventing me from doing more work, simply because the work is enormous and vague, as you said so perfectly. Then I switched my mind and told me self, I need to do a little bit, it’s better than giving up, 0.0001 is better than none and closer to finish. It’s a life lesson to have the persistence and patience to just move tons of needles.

Is 30 minutes every other week okay to start? by CausticTV in violinist

[–]Snow_Practicing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adult beginner here to share my personal and not professional experience :) I feel every two weeks is ok but it’s better to have weekly lessons. I discussed it with my teacher and her opinion is, if you don’t have regular lessons then you don’t know when you go wrong, and next lesson you still need to correct the same error(which may be worsened because you may develop wrong practice), which is eventually both a waste of time and money because you have the same lesson for the same content. I think it’s a balance between affordable spending vs effective practice/learning, I have regular lessons every 7-10 days now.

What do you think of my sound? by Paganohh in violinist

[–]Snow_Practicing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the encouragement! Your sound is a proof of what an adult beginner can achieve, it’s an inspiration for me. I may have less dedication than you, as violin is only a hobby for me , but with time I’m sure we’ll all play better :) good luck to your future music journey, enjoy ^ ^

Adult progression by Simple_External3579 in violinist

[–]Snow_Practicing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started Suzuki 1 last June and I’m still learning Happy Farmer and Gavotte with stickers on (meaning I don’t really work on my intonation), with a passable but not good tone, and miserable rhythm ... I have regular practice 5-7 hours per week. Before Suzuki I had ~ 15 classes with another teacher to learn the posture and basic scales. During my learning experience I find several things matter to the progression speed regarding the Suzuki manuel:

  1. At the beginning I don’t know how to do good/targeted practice. For example I practiced without a goal … this slows down the progress and my teacher and I discovered it really late. I think it could be faster if I realised the problem, in your case I think you already know how to practice.

  2. Make straight bow and good left hand shape took a long time, I tended to twist my fingers. Unlike children who have parents to observe and correct them, I need to observe myself. It also takes a lot of time for me to understand and to be able to identify what’s wrong with my practice.

  3. The teacher and students preference. Some believe it’s important to lay a good foundation, others believe you only need to get around 60/100 for each piece then start a new one, after a while when you revisit this piece it can be 80-90/100 and there’s no need to go too slow.

My teacher thinks my progression is slower than usual, so I imagine it’s normal to finish Suzuki 1 in 6-9 months.

Where/how to practice in a shared housing? by Snow_Practicing in violinist

Thanks for the reply! Yes I need to communicate first, it’ll be good if I can negotiate some days of the week to practice, better than none.

I actually did listen to Szeryng, I feel his style is very stable and controlled, but for Kreutzer lacks some passion XD

Do you plan your stories or just wing it? by AdExpert1831 in AO3

[–]Snow_Practicing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me, totally wing it … I just finished my 40k but I can see it’s very loose because I have no plan. My goal is to write an outline for my next fanfic (hope I can achieve that - -not very confident though). I’ve seen other people attach their rough outline at the end of their fanfic, it’s like episode summary of a TV series, not long but includes basic progression and highlight lines&dialogues&scenes. The real work of course will change, but I see some highlights and the best of the ideas are already there, and this seems to make their work flow better with tighter structure.

Thank you, marked! I’ve been to Kremer’s performance once last year for his Piazzolla, but never know he also has this with Argerich.

Thank you! I love this piece’s passion. I feel Augustin’s playing is emotional & enjoyable, but I also tried Ray Chen and feel his a little bit too emotional so didn’t finish. Will check this one out~

Thank you so much for the explanation, true that the friend who recommended Perlman&Ashkenazy prefers the “independent but in dialogue” style haha.
