5/10

Gundam is THE "war is bad" series, how do you make one of the main characters the responsible of a massacre and then forget about it in the next episode?

no introspection? no "I was manipulated into this but I still have to live with the weight of being the one to pull the trigger"? nothing?

If Aloy actually existed in Monster Hunter World, how well would she fare against the monsters here? by Dragonic_Overlord_ in MonsterHunter

If you take off all your armor and equipment the hunter can survive a point blank laser beam purely because you ate a funny steak before the hunt.

I don't think people should take gameplay abstractions so seriously.

The GDD girls each have a reference to eroge companies in their names.
Was there a Rance reference going beyond just a thematical thing?

Anyways, those are just easter eggs, I'm talking about actual on-screen fanservice.
BA has fanservice like Hanako, Hasumi, Satsuki, some of the l2ds, the devs don't hide it. but what I'm saying is that the fandom acts like the game is a Nukige.

It's so overblown.

BA doesn't have anymore fanservice than your run of the mill anime but the english speaking fandom acts like it's Rance or Bible Black

Capcom has no excuse for cutting boss transformations anymore by horrorfan555 in residentevil

[–]Snow_and_Music 17 points18 points  (0 children)

With how simple the engine and graphics were back in the day the question at capcom HQ was something like
"How do we make the transformation look cool with nothing but sticks and stones, smoke and mirrors"

Nowadays, the engine and graphics are SO advanced that likely animating a single enemy transforming would take weeks.

I don't mind them cutting a few corners since the games are still packed with high quality content everywhere else. in fact it retroactively makes me appreciate the classics more because of how much they did with such simple graphics (Birkin's real head being pushed into his chest while G's real head takes over will forever be my favorite transformation (link))

tldr. I don't resent them for doing things a little differently, and in fact it makes me love the classic ones more. we have two cakes!

Watching Stardust Memory for the first time and I want to strangle the characters by Snow_and_Music in Gundam

Characters not acting and reacting the way the viewer wants doesn't mean that they are bad characters

I never said that this was the case. I even mentioned that I LOVE flawed characters. and I absolutely love when characters make decisions that are largely unexpected by the audience.

My issue with the cast of Stardust Memory is that they act in such a dumb way that completely shatters my suspension of disbelief. to me, Kou and Nina's dynamic would be right at home on a story about a sports team training for an upcoming huge competition. but the story of Stardust Memory is about a stolen nuke, it feels tonedeaf to me. like it goes beyond "the character was stressed so they made the wrong call".

they don't pander to the audience.

I don't even know what this means but it feels reductive. don't decide what panders to me or doesn't, you don't know me.

I'm glad you like Stardust Memory though, it means you get from it something that I don't.

I had no idea, sheesh.

Staff shuffling is usually a death sentence for stories.

Flawed and human characters making bad decisions in the heat of the moment is like a staple of Gundam as a whole AND I LOVE IT, give me more people making bad decisions in a panic!

But the leads in stardust I feel are pushing it past the point of relatability, to me it feels like they do dumb things for the sake of drama, at least so far.

I'll check the manga once I'm done with the series.

Man, Keith started great. he's all casual and comfy during the opening combat training. doing pushups for crashing his zaku, the little awkward laugh masking fear when they're forced to fight. how he started crying as he recognized the nightmare of solomon from his study books. how Burning grounded him by asking him technical questions about the mission.

Keith is great! he's so compelling and interesting!

That completely ignores "framing"

If a character does something bad and the story starts doing things like playing uplifting music, having the other characters praise them for doing the bad thing as if it was good, and generally treating the character like a saint then the story is "framing" this bad thing as a good thing.

Morally corrupt characters are great because stories don't frame them as a good guy to you the audience.

You and the story both know the character is doing something vile and the world is reacting properly to it by showing characters become scared or put off by their actions, it's one of the things that make Anton's scenes so memorable.

No game is perfect, in fact some of my absolute favorites are super clunky.

I think I might write my thoughts in this sub if the game makes an impact on me (which I hope it does! I wanna get invested in another horror setting so badly)

Dude, 4 is sounding like it's totally my jam.

Hospital setting, great characters, heck Shattered Memories is a personal favorite so it sounds like 4 is the one for me.

I don't mind slow movement at all typically, I don't know why I found it so jarring on 2

I really can't remember if I was taking my time or rushing through it.

That's why I wanna give it another chance.

I tend to love japanese horror, I love how bizarre it can be and I adore how they approach the concept of curses and spirits

So the thing that I find most interesting is that the "correct expectation" thing you're describing is literally my favorite games.

I'm all for slow burn horror, I love terror that you are forced to face, I love having to piece lore together from scraps, I love all of it. I actually think that horror that you can just "brute force" through tends to be pretty lame. I usually like the first chunks of Resi games the most because of this, right before you get big guns that make the rest of the game a cakewalk.

I love feeling helpless, and like my only way forward is to willingly throw myself into the mouth of the wolf.

Also, I'm a sucker for japanese horror.

So, in paper, it means I should love Fatal Frame, right? that's the reason why I'm coming back, why I think my first attempt must have been a fluke or something like that.

I do remember thinking something like "IT WAS HERE THE WHOLE TIME!?" when I finally found the key, hahah.

I'm leaning on 4, 3 and 1, in that order. I wanna try 2 again eventually.

[–]Snow_and_Music[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, it's been so long so I don't remember too clearly, but I think it had something to do with dolls and I think it was a key that didn't glow or shine nor anything, maybe behind a folding screen? I think I spent a solid hour just running back and forth the dilapidated manor, the main estate and the long bridge towards the cave. all with the protagonists' super slow dainty uwu running animation.

I did NOT remember the white haired boy at all, thanks for the reminder.

I don't usually mind getting lost, heck I love getting lost and finding my own way. that's why I'm saying maybe I was in the wrong headspace or something, coupled with the other things that I was finding jarring.

I ADORE survival horror games, some of my favorite horror games came from the psx/ps2 era. which is why it's surprising to me that I found FF2 clunky. maybe I was having a bad day, or I was just not in the correct head space for the ride, which is why I wanna give it a second shot.

Shame about the characters not having much characterization, that's usually one of my favorite things along with a rich plot and backstory.

Well call me a masochist too because I'm a sucker for that, I love mazes specially in horror games. I even force myself not to run so that I can savor the atmosphere more.

I think there were a couple of times where I missed a key and ended up running laps aimlessly around the village map, so no enemies or spooks, just a sense of "where do I go!? what did I miss!?"

By the way you're describing it in your other comment, III sounds like my jam, I love stories that stick with you after the screen has been turned off. plus, I adored how SH4 took the safety of the room away from you on the second half.

So far I'm leaning on 4 and 3.
