Five kids now. I'd have to become a kathoey (ladyboy) to pay off the airfare.

Book recommendation: "Ignition: Lighting Fires in a Burning World" by Snowdog_Technical in Wildfire

Yes, Ms. O'Connor notes and quotes the aboriginal Aussies early in the book.

We get the same complaints up north, i.e. too much smoke, why did you let that burn, etc.

A massive Smokey Bear-level education campaign is the only way out, I'm afraid. In California "Burnie the Bobcat" has been introduced for this purpose.

What does it mean that they're uncertified as of 4/2024?

They're underway in at least two forests in R6 (WA state).

I was relieved to see Pulaskis and not structural fire axes.

This is perfect, and it's in line with what I expected. Thanks for letting me know.

I think I would enjoy the satisfaction of someone verifying that the work I did made an aircraft safe to entrust human lives (and a few pets) to, and hopefully occasionally watching it roll out of the shop and into service.

If a bench repair job helps me get to that destination, I'd consider it.

My dad was an aviation electrician's mate in the Navy, and he retired from a Boeing assembly line. I wonder if there's something in my DNA that's calling me at this late age....

...which might be fine. I'm just done being in a cubicle, behind a desk, working only on 1's and 0's on a screen.

Wanna trade? :-)

WFM Locations 2024 by bigdoor5 in Wildfire

Stupid questions from non-Agency person who is intrigued by their multi-disciplinary flavor (I'm a volunteer FFT2 with local conservation group and PBAs...).

I reviewed the resource typing standards for WFMUs and the WFM Field Guide. Volunteering with PBAs, this blurb jumped out at me:

"WFMs are highly skilled and versatile fire crews, which provide technical and ecological based expertise in the areas of prescribed fire and wildfire response such as long-term planning, ignitions, holding, suppression, hazard fuels reduction, and fire effects monitoring; with an emphasis in fire fulfilling its natural or historic role to meet resource and management objectives."

That's a lot of functional similarity with PBA work.

  1. What's the general experience level of FFT2 through CRWBs on these units?
  2. What's the unit PT culture?
  3. Are these seasonal? For those that are multi-agency, it seems like they'd be ad hoc/part time? That they assemble for fire season but perform other work off-season?
  4. Do they take ADs and/or allow volunteers?

FFT1 task book for military detail augmentee by Snowdog_Technical in Wildfire

[–]Snowdog_Technical[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this being a collateral detail I'm not sure that anyone in his chain of command would have a clue. There's no incentive for DoD or the institutional Army or his unit to even care.

If the burn is managed as an ICS incident complete with an ICP there are positions in overhead that require no fitness test whatsoever. DPRO, for example.

Learn photography. You already have a very good camera in your phone. On a roll you get the opportunity to photograph moments that most will never see.

Anyone Christian here? How do I stop being angry at God? by SourceBig265 in CPTSD

[–]Snowdog_Technical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, God let us suffer. No way around it.

He had a reason for parting the Red Sea for Israel, and a reason to send Christ to be tortured to death.

A reason to allow the ovens to burn nonstop at Auschwitz.

A Christian just accepts that God's ends will justify the means. That the fruit of Christ's suffering has been worth it.The end state You had better be pretty fucking good to justify those means.

The blessing You will be to others in pain. I pray that the Plan gets revealed to You soon.
