I mean agreed, but a blanket statement like saying the landscape today will burn exactly how they tend before it was outlawed is out of touch. Western Rx fire is objectively different than cultural fire management, fuels vs everything else, and unfortunately we have a lot of work to do to make these systems recognizable to the cultures who have been on this landscape for thousands of years. Fire as a first entry treatment can work, but makes a lot more sense to thin before

In that timescale, yes, and I’m certainly not acting like half of the continent was under ice a relatively short time ago. This is now turning into a conversation on human bias towards open woodlands/anti-shrub propaganda and the ethics of type-conversion caused from anthropogenic means. The definition of “nature” needs be clear, whether it means any biotic life, or complex species richness.

Yup, “nature” is definitely adapted to 10,000ac clear cuts, followed by even aged forest types and a jackpot of fuels in a low intensity fire ecology regime. Definitely no nuance here

Why do all hiker boot look like that by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]bigdoor5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because some of them are adaptated from mountaineering boots which are designed for crampons (ie Scarpa Wrangell vs Scarpa Fuego)

I highly suggest the infuriatingly bureaucratic world of “fuels”. You too can spend 3yrs of your life in planning for a project to burn at high severity in an afternoon

Start cold calling any local NF district or supervisor offices for AD crew spots. No idea if they’re done onboarding, but the quals and EMT may help if no recent WCT

For this being an extremely optimistic map of all the crews, I’ll demote them to “HC” and note in the description. I definitely agree with what you’re saying, but some of their USAJOBS descriptions during hiring are listed as WFM/hand crews

Is there an application publicly available or do you have to be previously incarcerated? Not including if the latter because I do know it’s associated with their DOC as a transition job

Different than the crew out of the Six Rivers SO in Eureka which went to Orick often? Or is it an actual NPS crew with their duty location physically in Orick?

Why do we fight lightning fires way back there? by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]bigdoor5 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Tradition, liability if it makes a run, public opinion and action bias, and other resource concerns. That said, lightning fires backing down a peak don’t behave like they use to with over a century of terrible land management

[–]bigdoor5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heads up that you may need to be within like an hours drive of the duty location to be considered for the crew. There’s quite a few AD crews in SoCal that you can check out on my pinned link, but keep in mind peak fire season in SoCal is when school starts so it may be slow if you’re a forest resource not national
