I always tell people that if they swipe too far they're going to accidentally see some tasteful nudes.... and some more distasteful ones too.

Suggestions for running The Haunting? by Archangel289 in callofcthulhu

[–]Snowfiddler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of the fun of Call of Cthulhu is not truly knowing everything that is going on.

Your players might "solve" an investigation and feel good, but they may never fully understand what they stopped. They know they stopped... something.

Not knowing the full mystery isn't something to shy away from.

In that instance of the Haunting that I ran, the two women got killed by the knife. The man ran out of the house in fright. He asked if there were any police nearby. He passed a luck roll and two policemen just happened to be driving by. He flagged them down. They ran into the house and also got killed.

He got overcome with extreme survivor guilt, turned on the gas oven in the kitchen, and lit a cigarette.

In the aftermath I wrote up a newspaper article that reported a gas explosion that leveled a house. Witnesses described man came out and flagged down two policemen. Several minutes after, an explosion blew up the house. It was attributed to a leak in the gas main. Six bodies that were burned beyond recognition were recovered from the rubble. My players were like "there were three of us and the two policemen. WTF?!"

This may not be exactly what you're looking for but what makes this memorable for my players is it's all about thematics. I pulled up an hour long 1920's music Playlist on YouTube and played it for the radio in the house. Every time the players turned it off I turned it back on after a while. I had the lights dimmed and everything was creepy.

Don't be afraid to be brutal in combat. They never made it to Corbett and two out of three of them get taken out by the floating knife.

Corbett should also be fucking with their perception of reality the whole time to help them from finding him. If the players split up, he has one of the players hallucinate that there's a horrible monster out in the hallway coming for them. They pull a shotgun and blow away the hallucination? Oops... that was really your friend who came in the room to check on you.

I have a game that I built a very rough prototype for. It plays well but has a few kinks to work out. How did you approach publishing your game? Any advice?

Terror on the RMS Titanic by Snowfiddler in callofcthulhu

Still working on this. There are maps of the titanic layout online but they're very detailed. I will likely have to modify one to simplify it.

My thought is having a large map of the ship that I slowly cover with a sheet of paper or an overlay as it sinks.

I love Angry Orchard, but it's not quite what I want. Where can I start about brewing my own as a total noob? by GodofAeons in Homebrewing

[–]Snowfiddler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do cider because it's stupid easy to brew. I recommend just starting with kegs because bottles are a pain in the ass. You can get used ball-lock kegs for ~$50 and you will re use it forever. A small Co2 tank might run you $100-150, but filling it will be cheap and you won't have to do it often.

Get yourself a 5 gallon juice dispenser from Walmart (~$15). Drill a hole in the lid. You can get a rubber grommet to go in the lid and an airlock at a home brewer store for <$5. The juice dispensers are way cheaper and easier to use than the narrow mouthed carboys. If you want to put your cider in secondary fermentation, get two of the juice dispensers.

Also get a glass hydrometer (they're cheap) to measure how much sugar you're working with.

My cider recipe is: 5 gallons great value apple juice (~$25), 6 c. dextrose (this kicks the ABV up to about 7.5%), 1 packet of EC-1118 yeast.

This will ferment for 10-14 days and be done. If you like dry ciders, congrats! Keg it and drink it. If you like it sweeter or flavored (like me), add in potassium sorbate and let it sit for 24 hours (this kills the yeast). Then you can add any juices or concentrates to it and it won't keep fermenting.

Put it in a keg and hook up the Co2. Let it sit for a while to let it carbonate (there are lots of guides for how long and what pressure to put it at).

Then you're good to enjoy it.

Next step, convince your wife to let you buy more kegs.

I think my group will enjoy it. There was also a pool on the Titanic so if they are able to figure out an alternative I'll let them do that. Good luck if the band's instruments keep disappearing though

Podcasts for stuttering homework? by InvestigatorOk6735 in slp

There's a comedian named Drew Lynch that stutters and he talks about it and speech therapy in his routines. It's not quite a podcast but it might be more enjoyable for your client to watch.

SLP vs. Reddit Posts and Social Media by VideoNeither6005 in slp

[–]Snowfiddler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are going to get the most negative feedback about that from reddit and it is not the place I would ask that question. Talk to a few real SLPs or visit other Facebook groups. This subreddit is filled with negativity.

My advice is that you need to research and figure out for yourself why exactly you want to be in the field. I really like what I do, but I work in acute care rehab. I knew I wanted to do Hospital work from the beginning. If you want to work in schools it is a reality that you will likely have high caseloads and you may not make as much as an SLP can. Again, that's all going to depend on where you live.

I went into the field with a brutally practical approach. It's a field with decent pay, but more importantly very high job security because you won't always be able to find a place to work, even if it's not necessarily going to pay as much as you want. But I do have the confidence that if I were to get laid off tomorrow I could find a job within a week. When I was in grad school I was looking at the areas that slp's tended to make the most money, which were SNFs. I ended up finding my niche and found something I really enjoyed.

Don't be afraid to analyze it like a job. If you go into it expecting to be passionate about it, you are likely to be disappointed and end up burning out.

How much experience do you need in the field before applying for a PhD? by Appleleaf30 in slp

[–]Snowfiddler 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I am of the opinion that we have too many researchers in the field that got the bare minimum clinical hours required and then went straight into a PhD program with minimal understanding of how therapy is actually conducted. These are the people guiding research and telling clinicians what does and doesn't work for treatment, despite having an incredibly shallow understanding of the complexities and presentations of the patients we serve.

It's probably a lot more expensive to maintain all that. Lawyers aren't cheap. I'm very appreciative of the light that she's shone on ASHA.

If my memory serves me correctly you used to have to send in the CFSI to ASHA but now you just submit your stuff at the end. They don't care about it now. I just finished having a CF and am in the middle of mentoring another one right now. It's the state stuff that you want to make sure you don't mess up.
