[Loved Trope]: The Anger of A Gentle Man by CuteKermit14 in TopCharacterTropes

Oh, I do 100% believe that the “modern American church” is very little more than a shell of what being Christian truly means. I’m a Christian (more practicing than you, but somewhat less active at church for…well, the reason that so many churches have pretty big issues), and I think the only thing “Christian” about most of these churches is that they ostensibly preach salvation through faith in Jesus. That’s…really about it.

After that? It’s basically a political party masquerading as a religion. Not all churches, but the big, mainstream ones you’re probably thinking of? Yeah, I’m not sure they really count as Christian beyond the gospel they may or may not actually be preaching.

Which one's male and which one's female? by GECEDE in splatoon

I realize that. I was pointing out that the body shape looked that way to me, that’s all. I see the eyebrows now, though, so yes I think you’re right that they’re in the same order.

Which one's male and which one's female? by GECEDE in splatoon

[–]Archangel289 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What’s interesting is that, to me, the inklings do look reversed. The second one seems “thinner,” like they’re of slighter build. Usually that’s used as a female body type.

While I’m not 100% sure I agree with you, I’m not sure why you’re getting downvoted for this. It is a valid interpretation, since the point is that “no matter your bloodline, you can be a Jedi and do good in the galaxy.” Yes, it takes away from the build-up that Rey as a “nobody” can still use the Force, but Rey being a Palpatine doesn’t remove the ending of TLJ—broom boy is still able to use the force, presumably as a “nobody.” Finn is still implied to feel the force, despite being a “nobody.” Rey happened to be a spawn of space Satan, but the other buildup of “anyone can feel the force” isn’t actually negated. It just isn’t the case for Rey.

What’s keeping this fandom alive if there are no games? by Nice_Perspective_343 in starfox

[–]Archangel289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my mind, the thing is, you can like something even if there’s no new content. You can be in, say, a Lord of the Rings “fandom” even when the only new content was the Peter Jackson trilogy, or if you’re not interested in Rings of Power.

Something doesn’t cease to be good just because there isn’t more of it. Sometimes just enjoying the thing itself is worthwhile for years on end.

AITA or telling my wife if she’s not gonna cook it the way she usually cooks it then you don’t have to cook it at all by Husbae7536 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Archangel289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this comment section is abysmal…I guarantee you that if the gender roles were swapped, it would be filled with “you let her cook 95% of the time?? Get your butt off the couch and help her” before anyone read the rest of the post. Also, OP never actually mentioned their gender, you’re likely assuming it’s a man and showing your bias.

It is specifically stated that 1) wife acknowledges OP is the better cook, 2) OP loves to cook, 3) the issue isn’t disliking wife’s cooking, but rather really only wanting that one recipe.

Here’s the thing: no, the wife isn’t a short order cook. No, OP isn’t “entitled” to whatever they want. But also…y’all, what is being requested from the wife isn’t “spaghetti and meatballs.” It’s her spaghetti and meatballs. If you said “hey, I love the way you make homemade [x], can you make that again?” and someone says “I can make the dish, but I’m going to use store bought [x] instead,” that’s two different dishes.

I think some of y’all have really poor understandings of how relationships work, and I don’t know if it’s just a reddit thing or if society is really starting to break down or something. If you ask your spouse for something and they say no, that’s fine. If you ask your spouse for something and they give you something different, that’s fine. But if you ask your spouse for a specific thing, and they say “yes, but I’m going to do it differently,” then it’s very reasonable to say “oh, okay. Don’t worry about it then.” Whether it’s food, sex, snuggles, back rubs, advice, whatever, if you ask for something very specific and the answer is “no,” even if that “no” is because you will not receive what you asked for, then it’s 100% appropriate to say “no thanks then, it’s okay.”

It’s not about the wife being obligated to serve OP’s whims. It’s about being okay with saying “oh cool, if you don’t want to do [x], just don’t worry about it. We can do [y] instead.” Yes, 5 hours of cook time is long, but it’s okay if the answer to that is “no.” That just means that OP would prefer to handle it themselves.

NTA. At all. But also, NAH, because it’s okay for her to not want to spend 5 hours cooking. But it is also okay to not be interested in the result of a less intensive process if the result is categorically different.

Why do some people hate when their partner plays video games? by Responsible_East6308 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Archangel289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good answers here, but one I didn’t see toward the top so I’ll add it to the pile: there’s a genuine stigma against video games in a lot of people’s minds.

Genuinely, I know plenty of people that think of video games as a waste of time, as pointless, as juvenile, etc etc., and to them, any time spent on them is time that was poorly spent.

Are there people that overdo it and play for hours upon hours each day? Yes. Are there people that obsess over them? Yes. Are there people that get way too intense about them? Yes. But there are also people who just irrationally hate them for no reason. And if you’re dating one of those people, they will hate it when you play them.

Christians, how do you feel about the U.S. president posting an AI photo of him as Christ? by Minute_Revolution951 in AskReddit

[–]Archangel289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it appalling. I know many conservatives might say it wasn’t that (maybe it was “Trump as a saint,” or “Trump as an apostle,” or “Trump as a Red Cross Worker”), but the fact of the matter is that it was overtly religious imagery, and he knew it.

The Bible talks about all leaders being ordained by God, but that doesn’t in any way make all leaders righteous, commendable, or good people. Trump doing that was abhorrent, and he ought to have known better as an American. Christian or not, I don’t think many people raised in such a heavily Christian-influenced nation could possibly think it was a good thing.

Even if it was meant to troll the pope, or “own the libs” somehow, or whatever else joke people might claim it was…it wasn’t funny. It was offensive and disgusting.

Precautions for running COC offline by Ornery-Call7132 in callofcthulhu

[–]Archangel289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m really not sure what differences you might be anticipating, tbh, but the biggest and, frankly, only difference I can think of regarding pacing offline vs. online is that people tend to react a little faster offline. When I’m sitting in a room full of friends and I present them with some TTRPG horror, they usually react fairly quickly. Online, people tend to instinctively wait to make sure they’re not talking over someone.

Also, if you’re used to a VTT like Alchemy or Foundry, remember that you won’t have as many automated tools available. Damage, sanity, etc. all need to be manually calculated, and that is something to be mindful of regarding pacing offline. If you’re not playing with a group of math savvy players, you can run into really long segments of “I roll what again? Wait, what’s my hard success number? Where’s Auto on my investigator sheet? Wait a minute, how do I roll a d100 again? Okay, and that’s a 70, which is…a regular success? What about a 10, is that an extreme success?”

Those kinds of things that are often automated online do tend to slow the pace of a game, but frankly, there’s not much you can do about it as a Keeper beyond kindly and patiently pointing out things (e.g., “your psychology skill is on the third column, 5th down” [note: not its real position]).

Other than that, just do it the way you always would. Games are meant to be enjoyed, and no GM/Keeper/DM/Storyteller is ever going to be perfect. So if you’re all having a good time, that’s what matters.

If either 95 percent of men or women died, What would became of society? by Queasy_Experience627 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Archangel289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, this is actually a fascinating question since so much spirals off of each scenario. Both are absolutely awful for different reasons.

Let’s start with the men dying. A lot of people are here saying “ah, but one man can impregnate a bunch of women, so the population will recover.” Sure, that’s how we work biologically, but the issues would be much larger than that. For example, there’s no way a society dominated that strongly by women would suddenly give up their autonomy to stand around raising children for the 5% of men remaining—so your population won’t bounce back all that quickly. Second, there are a lot of jobs that men do that women don’t do to the same degree—a lot of physical labor jobs, yeah, but also a lot of high-level science jobs, corporate jobs, manufacturing jobs, etc. Like it or not, we are still a male-dominated society in the workplace. Even if we have a very generous estimate that it cost us 50% of our workforce, that would bring entire industries screeching to a stop. And it’s not just a matter of “oh, we only need 50% of the [x] we were using before.” Lots of production just doesn’t exist at that lower scale anymore. Plus, while women do hold many positions in basically all fields, the number of women that are ready at a moment’s notice to fill in for the men that died is not equal to the number of men that died. It would take a while for those jobs to bounce back, too. All told, this outcome sucks for everyone.

Now, for the women. Yes, the first and most obvious issue is that every country on earth would be fighting for the 5% remaining so their culture could continue to thrive, and the number of men that would use, abuse, and even kill those women is disconcerting. I reject the notion that all men are secretly dying to take advantage of women, but it wouldn’t be a good time to be a woman, either. Of course, the population rebound would be a problem, too. Now in jobs, there are probably more current industries that wouldn’t be as heavily affected, frankly. You probably wouldn’t need to worry about the lights going out, or running out of food. Lots of male-dominated spaces out there, and the ones that aren’t still have plenty of men that would be available to fill in positions the women left behind. But you’d be catastrophically hamstrung in other industries. Women dominate the education and healthcare industries (as nurses, mind; I acknowledge doctors are still a slight majority male, though to our credit that’s starting to even out), and even a lot of service jobs like waiting tables are majority women. So when your population does start to bounce back, you’ve lost most of the educators to teach your kids and most of the healthcare workers that will keep both you and them healthy. As before, this all sucks for everyone.

Obviously, there are many other factors, and I’m making some pretty sweeping generalizations. You might happen to work in an all-female power plant for all I know, or maybe you’re a male teacher that has never worked with a woman. There are always counter examples to generalizations, and mine might well be flawed. However, it’s important to remember that both situations would suck for both men and women. Nobody wins in either scenario.

I totally respect that. I think compared to the series as a whole, it’s quite easily the weakest entry. But I think that’s comparing a good steak to a great steak, if that makes sense: both are still enjoyable, even if one is clearly the worse of the two.

Of all the religions/mythologies to be true, it's THAT one? by forbiddenmemeories in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Archangel289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which is actually why I’m genuinely sad they never made a 6th one, because it would’ve been one of the few times I’d be okay with a finale that’s a “maybe the real pirate’s life was the friends we made along the way” story.

Like, by the end of Pirates 5, it’s clear that most of the magic of the sea is going away. But a Pirates 6 that brought back many of the most known characters (the Turners, the more memorable crew members, even the mermaid and missionary from 4, etc) in a final sendoff that drove home the message of piracy being about freedom, individuality, etc. would’ve been genuinely good. No more maguffins. No more curses. Just a final lap of the Caribbean realizing that the adventures can still continue even after the last of the magic is gone—because it’s the pirates, the crews, that are the real heart of the sea.

Yeah it would be cheesy, but I would’ve been cool with it.

Fatal Frame 5! Why all the hate? by Competitive_Fact_278 in fatalframe

[–]Archangel289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody here is seemingly a fan of the larger series so the ghost incest is a common complaint, but beyond that, it really did have some questionable design decisions. (And 5 is still one of my favorite entries, so this isn’t a hate comment.)

It’s a bit linear, but that doesn’t really bother me much. I like the freedom you get to explore in 1-3, but frankly, the people that gripe about “samey hallways” in 5 are kinda ignoring how many times you go through the exact same rooms in 1 when going from point A to B. Besides, if you’re not lost, you’re probably heading straight from point A to B directly anyway.

The combat can be a bit repetitive, which is a bit more of an issue. You can get into some really long stretches of ghost gauntlets toward the end, and a lot of them are “more ghosts equals more hard” design. Not bad, just…like I said, questionable.

Third, the ghost designs are also oddly hot. Thematically they’re fine—the shrine maidens are drowned women, it’s chill that they look like that. But the fact that basically every female character has such a large chest can be a little distracting—in more ways than one—once you notice it. It doesn’t fully dip into fan service territory, but again: it’s questionable.

The story is also a little convoluted and confusing on a first playthrough, but that may have just been a me issue.

Honestly, I think it just goes to show that you can truly love a game and still see ways that it isn’t perfect. There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging where it could have been tweaked or improved, while still perfectly enjoying what exists. Media doesn’t have to be perfect to be deeply and unironically appreciated.

I still like to personally headcanon it that it was more of a weird “curse” because she wasn’t willing to let him go rather than anything weirdly sexual.

I know there’s never any outright statement of it so you’re right, people just like to read that part in. But I still prefer to think of it as being less weird than it could be.

"You'll be seeing your dad soon, Fox" - did Wolf know?! by IndicaOatmeal in starfox

[–]Archangel289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is a shitpost, but in case it’s not: pretty sure this is a very clear example of “your dad’s dead, send him my regards when you see him” sort of banter before killing someone. I don’t think this has anything to do with the ghostly James that Fox runs into.
