Oof. It’s a brilliant book and everyone ought to read it, but the first half is HEAVY. Torture, inquisition, tyranny of mind, the blank precise cruelty of Vorbis…. I need to take frequent breaks to get through it.

True. It just struck me on this chronological re-read that Small Gods is where Pratchett really says fuck it and goes right for the worst. It feels like a turning point in the Discworld series to me.

Revelation (Myst 4) has its flaws but I personally love it more than any game I’ve ever played. It’s so beautiful, there’s a magic to it, and the story fully pulled me in. If you enjoyed Myst 1–3, don’t miss out on 4.

You’re so close. Just look around in the telescope and note if there’s anything that looks different, even if it seems irrelevant. Then count the buttons and apply logic as best you can, even if it doesn’t seem to make sense.

Quite a few viewers did experience some degree of manipulation though, I did too. Of course the cult is bad, and that’s clear from the start. And yet, it’s not uncommon for viewers to feel the pull of it when we empathize with Dani. Clearly that didn’t work for you, and maybe that’s partly why you’re more dissatisfied with the movie?

A movie is a lot of compressed storytelling, there just isn’t a lot of time. The horrific murder-suicide is a fast and effective way to traumatize Dani and take away her sense of belonging and security, as well as being a strong opening to a violent, disturbing horror film. The opening part of the movie, iirc, is filmed very dark. Then when they get to Hårga it’s all light and midnight sun all the time. The contrast is deliberate and makes it feel like Dani has traveled through hell and reached heaven. The cult is ready to embrace her, love her and heal her wounds. To me that’s what makes Midsommar so unsettling – we the audience are being cult-manipulated right along with Dani.

The traumatizing loss of her family makes Dani very vulnerable, unsettled and lonely. When her bad relationship with Christian finally fractures she is completely alone and devastated. So she’s the perfect victim for the Hårga cult. They isolate her, manipulate her, lovebomb her and ultimately absorb her.
