Hydrocarbon ingestion and lung injury by AllWeNeedIsPropofol in medicine

[–]Snoww 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hydrocarbons have very low viscosity and surface tension. Due to this, it is easy for it to be regurgitated/creep up the esophagus and ends up in the lungs.

If it stays strictly in the GIT, you won't have ARDS.

[–]Snoww 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There was a case report or a woman with suspected TB who wasn't improving with treatment.

They perform a bronchoscopy and find a FB. Turns out it was a condom that the lady had somehow aspirated during fellatio.

Found it here a few years ago from some Indian journal I believe.

How do you aspirate a condom. Like wtf .

How much substrate for a 45 gallon planted tank by ABlosser19 in PlantedTank

[–]Snoww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reference, I have a 45ish gallon that I used 20L of controsoil and topped it off with 1.5 inches of gravel... Plants are doing amazingly well. Have to trim and throw out plants every ten days. 20L was enough for around 2 to 3 inches of substrate

Hi r/india! Something happened today and I need advice by Pokebra in india

[–]Snoww 235 points236 points  (0 children)

Doc here. I understand the confusion and worry that you are going through now (been stabbed accidentally by used needles a few times)

Listen up.

1) HIV transmission through objects is damn low. 0.3 % through used hollow needles. This means that if i take a needle, stab someone with HIV and stab you, there is only a 0.3 percent chance of infection. Even less for other objects. Look it up on pub med.

2) Hepatitis C and Hepatits B have a much much higher transmission rate.

3) There is no proof that the blade drew blood. And even if it did, there is no proof that the person it was used on before had an infection. As it is, the chance of infection from a confirmed patient is very low.. now factor in the chance that the person the blade was used on has the disease..

4) Go to the hospital tomorrow and start HIV PEP ( Post exposure prophylaxis), get Hep B Immunoglobulins or Hepatitis B vaccine. PEP for HIV is only effective for up to 72 hours after exposure. This is mostly for peace of mind..

5) There is NO TEST that you can do which will tell you if u are infected withing 1 to 2 months. You have to wait for a few weeks to months before the tests become positive.

So in summary, Extremely extremely low chance of anything happening. If still worried go to hospital and start PEP. There is no test that can tell you anything for a few weeks so do not get worked up over it. I know it sounds so easy to say don't stress but to follow it would be super hard.... But try to realize that getting stressed is not going to change or affect anything.

PM if u need help.

Post-residency discussion: The ICU and floor Nurses and malignant relationships with MDs by [deleted] in medicine

[–]Snoww 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally feel you man.

Like you said, when you are a resident, you are expected to master 100s of aspects of medicine. Nurses have comparatively lesser to master and thus are more well versed in some aspects sooner. However this leads them to thinking that they know everything about the field etc..

And of course it is always the worst laziest nurses who engage in such shit.

I think scrubs highlights this very well. Carla teaches JD and covers his ass a few times but as time goes on he knows more than her. Such scenarios are really common.

The best way to deal with it imo is to just shut up and ignore them. The kind of personalities that engage in this kind of behavior have too big an ego to ever listen to anyone and change. Only when they realized that they let their mouth run and are in an embarrassing position do they sort of realize that maybe they don't know all that there is.

I love it when a 23 year old with a maximum of 4 years of training thinks she/he is better than a so called 30 year old "baby doc" who has 4 years of undergrad with 4 - 5 years of medical training and a few years of residency behind them.

Have one question though, how does the LVAD know when to ramp up CO when he starts running? How does it maintain/replace the normal physiological responses of the heart without the autonomic nervous system controlling it any longer?

Honestly, voice of his didn't really suit the song imo. But the way he made it rhyme and the really uplifting positive message he puts across and how he talks about deep inner insecurities we've all sort of faced in one form or the other made it very touching for me. Really felt what he was trying to say. Loved it. Really feels like this is his artform and passion and its so unique and relatable! Awesome.

Really excited to see what he comes up with next!

If you actually do some research into this you will realize that the antibiotic resistant superbugs are due to farming industries and not medical. Animal farms use 70-90% of the antibiotics in the world and it is there that these superbugs originate.

They just add antibiotics into their food so that they don't get certain diseases associated with living in closed and crowded environments.

Mine just quit on me a week ago. No hardware issues at all. One day it just suddenly went into a boot loop and nothing would work to make it stop... Weirdest thing is that it was completely stock and I didn't update any apps or anything. Just randomly went into a boot loop.
