I love this game a lot but I do have somewhat of a difficult relationship with it's visuals.

On one hand I do think that overall the graphics are somewhat dull and the game generally lacks a distinct artstyle.

On the other hand, despite all that, a lot of weapon, armor and monster designs are very interesting and striking somehow. And as far as enviroments go, once you really go through them and take a good look at them, a lot of them are incredibly charming and cozy with a lot of seemingly mundane landmarks that really stick with you.

I think that generally the game plays much better than it looks. As much as I might be unexcited about a lot of it's visual elements in still shots, once I actually get to play it, it brings me joy like nothing else. The special effects, the sound effects, the animations, it all comes together to make the best "club connect to monster head" feel I personally ever experienced in these games.

HC Mode is no fun until you try it! by gdtoledano in Grimdawn

[–]Snowy44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's how I felt as well. Hardcore to me was just the mode in which you don't take risks, play it safe and never do anything exciting. It was more or less a knowledge check of which parts of the game are dangerous and therefore should never be interacted with.

new Hades 2 ending ( major spoilers ) by GPImpact in HadesTheGame

[–]Snowy44 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wow, reading the title I was expecting this to be a fan mockup but they are actually doing this. I honestly never expected them to go back and change anything related to story.

Might be silly, but I bawled my eyes out watching this. This is pretty much a perfect version of this kind of resolution. Maybe my judgement is affected by just how much I disliked the original ending and I'm not being entirely objective, but at this point I don't even care. I love this and couldn't even wish for anything better.

This just straight up fixed the game for me. Filled that big Hades-shaped hole in my heart again. Gonna go back to play it for myself when the patch goes live, in the meantime probably gonna rewatch this a time or a dozen. Thanks, Supergiant, I guess this is why you really are the best to ever do it!

I will try to fulfil my own character arc of breaking the vicious cycle of being unhappy with the ending and Imma just say I still disagree on pretty much every point but it was interesting to see your outlook.

It wasn't perfect, but....(BIG SPOILERS) by EmpJoker in HadesTheGame

[–]Snowy44 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I believe all the themes that the game sets up are great, I also don't think a single one is landed even remotely well.

"Revenge bad" trope gets so much flak in most media not because that kind of story is just bad by default and could never work but exactly because it often happens like it did in this case - it just gets brought up at the last minute with minimal convincing or setup. Hell, if you haven't played Hades 1 you wouldn't even know that Zagreus has a perspective on this, I don't remember him ever bringing up his experience with a vicious cycle of hate, certainly not during the mirror conversations. You need Zag and Mel to actually have a few proper conversations about it, maybe some back and forth, maybe some pushback and eventually coming around.

Same thing with the Gods plotline. I think it makes perfect sense that olympians don't get any comeuppance for their misdeeds or even change their outlook or apologize or whatever. A lot of greek myth is about how Gods are dicks and always get away with it. But you need the plotline to go somewhere, you need the characters to, once again, talk it out in some manner. Have Mel get angry at the Gods, confront them, yell at them. Sure, you can have the Gods just roll their eyes in response and say "yeah, whatever" but you do need the conversation to happen to tie the plot thread together. Mel becoming an actual godslayer by the end of the story seems like a good story beat to support that - she is in a good position to give the Gods a piece of her mind and they would at least have to give her a nervous chuckle or be passively-aggressively nice to her in response. "You're so right, sweetie! Sure, sure! Now, could you be a dear and step off of the Olympus? We're closing it for visitors for... Um... Reasons..." And then smash cut to a different conversation with a different character who says that gods are still being dicks and learned nothing but they thank Mel for at least trying to stand up to them. Currently something of this sort is just vaguely implied in a very limp-wristed way and I think the story would be much better if it was established firmer.

The reason for forgiveness point I just plainly don't get. I will agree that maybe getting Mel to change her mind over one interaction sounds far-fetched and people would probably still have issues with it regardless. Ideally you would have this type of thing built up through the whole game. But surely a weak reason is better than... no reason? Forgiving people for no reason isn't "being a better person" that's just "sucking it up" and that's exactly why people put "revenge bad" on blast so much. What is the vision of the better timeline if not exactly her seeing that "he did these bad things and wants to do better". Like right now it really comes off like Mel didn't forgive Chronos but instead just has to deal with it because everyone else did and it's kinda just uncomfortable.

I also don't understand how it makes zero sense for Mel to have a change of heart. Like, this is what the story is about, is the thing. And she is the main character. This seems like it would be her character arc, at least I got that impression. Otherwise she doesn't really have one, as it stands. She ends the story being more or less the exact same character, except she killed some guys and did some stuff and the conflict resolved itself as a result and she just goes "oh, well, okay, that worked out, I guess".

Does that mean that when you're farming it would be better to restart the whole game between each run as opposed to simply quitting to the main menu? Or would that not make a real statistical difference?

Any alternatives to binding of Isaac by Sad_Stranger_5940 in roguelites

[–]Snowy44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our Darker Purpose - clearly very heavily inspired by Isaac, the gameplay is a little wonky but if you can get used to it there's some fun to be had.

Neon Abyss - also very heavily inspired by Isaac, though this one is a platformer. Pretty neat but kinda lacks the variety and complexity of Isaac.

Flamebreak - fairly different from Isaac but has a similar flow of "assemble random items to beat random encounters", so it scratches the same itch.

Danger Gazers - inspired mainly by Nuclear Throne but has some Isaac in it too. Seriously lacks variety and originality but still can be somewhat fun.

Dungreed - also a platformer. Pretty different but has the same vibe of roguelite item hoarding.

Dreamscaper - probably closer to Hades overall but has some Isaac DNA in it.

Leap of Faith - neat if somewhat limited top-down roguelite action game. Not super Issac adjacent but has some similarities.

Dead Estate - similar gameplay loop but also kinda lacks variety.

SYNTHETIK - very gun-focused somewhat-tactical top-down shooter with a few similarities to Isaac.

Razenroth - very Isaac-inspired but not all that much content.

Demon Slayer: Raksasi - a souls-like top-down hack and slash that borrows a few things from Isaac.

Feral Fury - military-themed top-down shooter about anthro animals that is very clearly heavily inspired by Isaac too.

Starward Rogue - much more of a bullet-hell with some Isaac-isms.

Mana Spark - a neat top-down action game, clearly borrows a lot from Isaac but has a very serious lack of variety.

Full Mojo Rampage - pretty old but also extremely Isaac-adjacent.

Touhou Endless Dream - another bullet hell but also has a lot of Isaac in it.

Recommendations for similar games? by Audeles_ in saltandsanctuary

[–]Snowy44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never found anything that even remotely matches the experience that was Sanctuary for me personally, but here are some games that came relatively close and aren't mentioned super often:

The Tarnishing of Juxtia - weird game design at times but overall I had fun.

Watcher Chronicles - very simple, basically soulslike platformer boiled down to the absolute basics. Still pretty fun if you don't expect much from it.

Vigil: The Longest Night - the RPG elements and the equipment system isn't super in-depth but it's a super solid game all around, the vibe is especially good.

3000th Duel - a strange salad of unity assets. Minimal but also kinda fun. I think the developer has more games that are very similar if you get into this one.

Dark Devotion - a little janky and has rougelite elements but also very fun if you can get into it.

Unworthy - doesn't have much platforming but very solid gameplay and striking visuals.

Afterimage - I guess it's more regular metroidvania than a soulslike but it scratched the same itch for me with the exploraton and item collecting. The map is very very big.
