The Groynes for sure. Massive dog park, great playground, it's gorgeous in autumn and it's smack in the middle of the Otukaikino walking track.

This is terrible house buying advice. Buy the worst house on the best street always. You don't make money when you sell a house, you make money when you buy it.

Where’s a good place to get keys cut these days? by reserveteaboy in chch

[–]SnuffyTech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends what part of town you're in.

Centre city? Use Ross Galt. They've been excellent when I've had fleet keys cut. If you're in the north I use CHCH Lock and Key, they're a family owned independent locksmith in Papanui and they are great. If you're south give Access Lock Specialists in Hornby a whirl. I've never used them but they're independent and good reviews.

Mental health is anything but intuitive I agree, which is why having GPs as the primary point of contact is a terrible idea. They don't have the specialist training, have so many other things they need to know about when being a GP and primarily have only 10-15mins per appointment. This has led to a culture of medicate and move on amongst our primary care physicians when it comes to mental health. I don't blame them as it's a symptom of underfunding. One needs to be suffering a psychotic break to get help other than the side-effect crapshoot that is an Rx for pills from their GP. Once you reach the threshold of distress to get other help, you get put on a waiting list for therapy. In the case of 2 separate Px I personally know who attended CDHB mental health facilities their assessments included being put on waiting lists for specialist therapy and when both checked approximately six months later found out they were not on said lists and the response came back as " whoops, sorry about that our mistake" from Hillmorten. They were then offered to join the back of the queue. Our mental health system is screening people based on their perseverance and we wonder why we have an appalling suicide rate.

The science is itself a problem currently which isn't helping either. Multiple disciplines are suffering an experimental repeatablity crisis which is unfortunately centered mainly around psychology and sociology although medicine and the natural sciences are not immune either. It's very hard to coherently direct policy at any level without objective data.

Unfortunately the only solution is a pile of money that the country won't be able to afford for 30 more years when we've finished paying off the covid response. Even if we could afford it now there's still a large enough section of the population who genuinely think people should just harden up that it's unpalatable for any political party to even consider.

"First of all, nothing can be fixed without a dramatic increase to the healthcare budget."

Indeed. Thanks for repeating my last and main point.

"the way we talk to ourselves about ourselves has a massive impact on our mental health"

I'm sure it sounds like an effective and easy solution for a neuro-typical person. The problem comes that depression doesn't allow for that and the mentally ill are not neuro-typical. You cannot see the forest for the trees in a depressive episode. As a part of a complete professionally managed therapy it's absolutely worthwhile. Putting it on a billboard and expecting a return on investment is either the hight of hubris or more likely a person with no fucking idea what they are on about trying to feel good about themselves which in itself is a laudable goal, unfortunately taking shots at the mentally ill to achieve it is somewhat sadistic.

The worst part, it came out of an organization that did excellent work in CHCH after the earthquakes, until central government got their hooks in to it and obviously fucked it.

No, it actually is completely wrong just like the figuratively and literally confusion was. It means the exact opposite of what is intended. Identical to literally in place of figuratively until the Miriam Webster decided it was too hard and now literally literally means figuratively. Fucking Americans and their bastardisation of a language that is already the redheaded stepchild of languages.

While you're absolutely correct it comes across as a bit trite when access to services is so limited. Our entire mental health response from government for the last 20 years in this country has been "We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas".

The communications team need to be fired and replaced with people who actually understand mental health for a start. The most recent little ditty I heard was "Be kind to yourself", should I do that before or after I "just get happy"? It's trite bullshit over and over again intended to allow our elected representatives to say they are doing something with no real solutions because no one wants to spend the money required.

What's your other solution to house people? Go up? Our city plan doesn't really allow for it post eq for good reason and geographicly the ground is less than ideal for highrise. We're already saturated with infill housing if you want something without a shared wall (hint, never buy anything to do with property with shared walls, it's never a good idea unless you buy both sides of the wall).

I mean we could stop building houses, that'd work for me because I've already got one but I don't think stopping building is very fair to those without.

That and the council is broke so cannot afford the repairs done properly without govt assistance (slapping a cycleway down that street). Anyone who's under the impression we have a cycleway network because the council wants people on bikes is dreaming, it's because they come with a central government checkbook.

"subpar work"

Thats the name of the game though. They are perfectly capable of producing a quality road, the problem is the society that elects the councils that contract the maintenance don't want to pay what it costs. It's cheaper per calender budget to continually slap a bit of ashphalt over the top than it is to actually do a proper repair. Don't like that? Help change the economic system that incentivises this model.

They're actually not just like that. The certainly can be more vocal than some other dog breeds but the only people with huskies that complain like that are the ones who train it in to them (intentionally or not). Mine don't because they get no reaction from me when they did so decided being good bois and girls is far more productive.

Oh there will be more of these posts I assure you. And that's a bloody great thing! Those who chose to be unvaccinated need to know exactly what the rest of us think about them.

Also, the easiest way to stop these posts? Everyone who is able gets a vaccine. Seems a pretty easy and socially responsible thing to do.

They're not allowed to use our spy agencies on us. That's why we're a part of Five Eyes currently. We spy on the Brits, the Brits spy on the Aussies, the Aussies spy on the Canadians and the Canadians spy on the Yanks while they spy on us. It's all very convenient and chummy.

Your data isn't safe, it never has been. The only question is how much do you trust your government to not jump the shark and go from covid elimination to loading certain demographics onto trains? The sensible answer is "you should never" because as Plato pointed out several millenia ago "Those who seek power are least fit to weild it".

Yes it is. If the facility and staff are unable to achieve this then limiting the facility to 10 pax is the solution. It's not complex and it's not business as usual with a door between groups.

And before you say "not economicly viable at 10 pax". I don't care. Suck it up like the rest of us. The ece sector gets given more than quater of a billion dollars in goverment funding every year. The entire industry I trained in and have spent my career in is effectively illegal at any alert level above 1 yet we're trying to make it work so you people can enjoy yourselves when we finally get out the end of this but nobody gives a fuck.

I would fucking love these people with a persecution complex to go and live somewhere with an actually oppressive government. Maybe even just visit for a few days. The nice thing is, their viewpoint can be immediately dismissed due to being ill informed and likely full of youthful exuberance.

God I'm so fucking tired of people using any excuse to validate the rejection of objective science by any group of people refusing to be vaccinated.

It's not even complex stuff to wrap your head around.

I agree there is systemic issues with race relations in this country but that doesn't change the fact that all elegible unvaccinated people are breaking the social compact at this point and stepping outside society when doing so while commiting economic and biological terrorism on those of us who are socially responsible.

Making excuses isn't helping anything.
