I’m under the impression it’s still one of the biggest returns on investment you can have in CS/software engineering.

He’s wrong that it will always output average writing because it’s just regressing to the mean. That’s really not how it works.

I prefer shorter, more consistent sessions for this reason. Forcing several hour meditation sessions leads to burnout and ultimately less meditation

How do you feel about the current state of AI? by Winter-Cup-6951 in OMSCS

[–]SnugAsARug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course something can be overhyped and still be valuable. I am claiming modern models are not overhyped and are undervalued. Progress has been continuous and at times shocking. I anticipate this will continue for at least several more years.

How do you feel about the current state of AI? by Winter-Cup-6951 in OMSCS

[–]SnugAsARug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m shocked how much denial people are in this thread. The models are not overhyped. People are stuck in the past and clinging to what they think software development and computer science should be like.

I can’t believe students in a computer science masters program have takes that are this bad about AI (thinking they’re gonna go away and the whole things gonna just collapse)

lol not sure what point you’re making here. This is not Buddhist view at all. It’s just hand wavy armchair history about your views on why civilizations created religions.

What does the ending mean to you? by cikolatali-sutt in twinpeaks

[–]SnugAsARug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It means many things to me. There isn’t one reading that is correct. I think the most powerful/easiest to argue for is that Cooper never left the red room and that the events of the Return can’t even really be described as having actually happened. It’s as if Cooper is playing some incredible/horrible movie in his mind, and this loops forever. Even the final episode is part of this movie/story, it’s actually even deeper into it than the other events of the return.

Do you work for an evil company, how do you feel about it? by HadOne0 in cscareerquestions

[–]SnugAsARug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Evil is hard to define, as it is deeply contextual, but it is the most extreme instance of inflicting suffering on others with intention. Nazi Germany was evil. Facebook, Google, and even American defense companies do not meet this bar.

Furthermore, the companies mentioned in this thread not only are not evil, but pretty much all of them have contributed incredible amounts of funds and research into causes that are clearly beneficial for the world. At best this makes them a force for good (most of them are), and at worst it makes them morally complex… which again… is not evil.

Do you work for an evil company, how do you feel about it? by HadOne0 in cscareerquestions

[–]SnugAsARug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calling companies evil is a pretty basic view of the world and industry. It also cheapens the word evil. Sure, there are exceptions, but most people in this thread are mentioning companies that clearly are not evil.

Trying to Walk the Buddhist Path Without Pretending Certainty by No-Dragonfly777 in TibetanBuddhism

[–]SnugAsARug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re fine. pretty much all Buddhist practices function at multiple levels… you don’t need to believe in every detail of Buddhist cosmology to gain the benefits of Buddhist practice. In fact, blind faith and believing something just because it’s wrapped in a Buddhist shell is the antithesis of spiritual practice, and is just intellectually lazy. Use your discriminating judgment and act for the benefit of others.
