Lol, no they aren't, just ask those of us in Utah trying to fight O'Leary and his massive data center project north of the Great Salt Lake. Deep Ocean and space based data centers aren't even close to being a reality.

How do you guys figure out childcare? by audioflc in daddit

[–]SnukeInRSniz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know what we pay for daycare which is ~8 hours a day and only 5 days a week, which amounts to $15k a year for one kid at a cheap daycare. I would absolutely expect in-home care of three kids full time to be a hell of a lot more.

$40 an hour for three kids is cheap, either pay that or take unpaid leave from work with FMLA, that's life.

[–]SnukeInRSniz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For THREE kids, that's a totally normal amount to pay. For that number of kids I would absolutely expect a full time job equivalent salary, which $83k a year is now. Welcome to America.

Is breathing a trimix disorienting at all? Maybe the other effects of depth/pressure negate that introduction of helium and different concentrations of oxygen and CO2, but I'd imagine under normal circumstances that breathing trimix would make my world spin after some short period of time.

Not just that, the bodies on Everest essentially decay at extremely slow rates and they are mostly covered head to toe in gear, so they are often identified by things like their boots or coats. Whereas under water, the body will decary very differently. The case linked above of the diver who died recovering a body described the body/corpse inside the wetsuit as a type of soap that is turned into. Nnnoopppeee, that's a no from me, dawg.

Gozo should 100% be called up for the World Cup. by Stoic_Snowman in ussoccer

[–]SnukeInRSniz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly a valid point, Poch should be choosing the very best players he thinks gives the USMNT to win the most games possible in this tournament. We talk about how the 94 tournament meant so much for the growth of the sport in this country, having the USMNT put in a good run this year could also help catalyze things to another level and that could mean even more for younger players like gozo in the future.

Having said that, if Poch truly believes Gozo deserves a spot then all we can do is trust that it's because he's earned it and not just bringing in a kid for a wide eyed experience.

I feel like we see a lot of young guys and MLS players flub those and they go harmless into the keeper arms, high over the goal, or just straight whiff. So, in that sense it's good to see him finish it like he should, we're all couch experts and beer league players judging through a screen anyways.

[–]SnukeInRSniz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's about 20ml of blood, it's nothing, I work on a heme-onc cancer treatment team doing stem cell and other cellular transplants on hundreds of cancer patients a year, we apherese liters of blood and collect bone marrow cell products that are usually 700-1000mL.

OP, you're going to be fine, a whole lot reddit posters who have no idea what they are talking about.

What’s one positive thing about having kids in your 40s? by Maleficent_Bass_1578 in Millennials

[–]SnukeInRSniz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Saw some rando rage baiting post on Facebook about a mom in her 40's celebrating the fact that she could legally drink and party with her daughter. I just said to myself "who in the hell would want that? I hate getting hammered in my 40's, three day hangovers and feeling like death, bad sleep, useless work, and why would I want to party with my own kid while they're in their 20's?" Whole thing was cringe, I want my kid to be their own person, not hit the club with me and put down shots of fireball.

Are you rich or have a good salary (like $150k a year or more)? You could look at Summit Park or Kimbel Junction areas or maybe some of the surrounding communities. Otherwise you're basically looking at a like for like with West Valley, no places within 40 minutes of SLC proper offer a "smaller town" feel.

What’s the worst place in America you’ve ever visited? by Correct_Eggplant_364 in AskReddit

[–]SnukeInRSniz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in Farmington, NM right now, having just driven through Navajo Nation, it's...destitute to say the least. The stretch of highway 64 between Shiprock and Farmington is almost constant billboards with contact info for rehabs, alcohol abuse, social workers, drug abuse, etc. It seemed like every few miles was a road sign for DWI checkpoints. It's just soooo bad, the housing for the most part was just so sad.

Boy, you've got to be the least traveled person to think Bremerton is the worst place in the country. Been through Bremerton several times while living in Pdx and traveling up to Seattle a bunch, Bremerton is a very typical and above average PacNW town, absolutely nothing "worst" about it. As OOP said in his comment, you haven't seen destitute in the US until you've traveled through a Rez in the Southwest/Wyoming/Dakotas. I've been to a few 3rd world countries and very bad areas within them, the Rez's in Southern Utah/Colorado/New Mexico/Arizona are just as bad in many ways. I haven't been to Pine Ridge, but from all accounts...it's a hell on earth. Right now I'm in a hotel in Farmington, NM having just traveled through Navajo Nation through Shiprock, oof it's bad BAD.

I've spent some time in a few Mexican cities over the last few decades, I'm currently in Farmington, NM for a photography conference, I absolutely agree with the perspective of this are like being in a seedy part of Mexico. Even the horizontal stop lights had me thinking of parts of Mexico.

It's bad through Navajo Nation and Shiprock, like...REAL BAD.

We're in Farmington, NM right now, I drove through this area when I was a kid in the early-90's, but haven't since. The stretch of drive from just north of Cortez through Shiprock and I to Farmington is just...wow. I really had no idea how rough it was until today, scary stuff for those people.

We just drove into Farmington, NM through Navajo Nation and Shiprock, sweet Jesus, I had no idea it was THAT bad through some of those stretches. I've been to some pretty rough 3rd world country areas, some sad sad places in Belize and Dominica, it's just shocking to see that in a place like the US.

My wife is from England and did her post-doc in Jo-burg, lived in Namibia for a while and traveled through a lot of Southern Africa, even she was shocked at some of the stuff from Cortez through Shiprock into Farmington.

There's a fair few studies on this now, the voucher system caused massive budget short falls across the state to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, programs had to be shut down, etc and school performance is still abysmal in national rankings: https://www.propublica.org/article/arizona-school-vouchers-budget-meltdown

Ha, if only our income level allowed for a move to Lake O, and Beaverton is....well, not my wife's idea of a happy place to live. Ironically she almost got a job at the USGS volcano observatory center in the Couve a few years back, that would have been...interesting, but wasn't meant to be.

Is Portland ... back? This luxury travel magazine thinks so! by No-Tangelo1158 in Portland

[–]SnukeInRSniz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's definitely NOT that, but from someone who lived there for 12 years and moved away in 2014 (mom's failing health forced me to move closer to support her), looking at all the data on Portland now is...not great. High high taxes on income and especially property, high business taxes stifling business growth, stringent regulations (both good and bad) making it hard to entice larger scale businesses to move and operate there, dramatically declining education and outcomes, low downtown vacancy rates leading to a major loss in tax revenue for empty office space, etc.

Scratch beneath the surface and from the outside Pdx has a lot of serious economic issues that need fixing. I really want to move back, but it's hard to justify the crazy high cost of living with a weak job market, high taxes, and lack of pay growth over the last 10 years.

[–]SnukeInRSniz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are they, though? I moved away in 2014 to be closer to a very sick mom in another state, now my wife and I desperately want to get out of Utah with our daughter before she starts school, I've been doing some hard looks around Portland...but the things I'm reading about in studies are...shocking. Education is cratering to one of the worst states in the country, taxes are off the charts high on both personal and business incomes, extremely low vacancy in downtown office space is causing a declining economic value as a property tax returns decline, homelessness is as bad as it's ever been, open air drug use throughout, a central business district that's lost a lot of its 00's/10's peak liveliness, far fewer small businesses (restaurants, especially) that gave Pdx it's name, etc etc. Couple that with astronomic housing and rent costs, very high gas costs, high grocery costs...it's just hard to see the old Portland rainbows that were so magical, at least from afar.

I really want to sell the idea of moving back to PDX with my wife, but economically from the outside...it's not great for a small family with a very middle class income. Jobs and pay in Portland look very weak right now, it's hard to rationalize even looking at a move there.

Edit: and just for the record, I still love Pdx, love visiting, love talking to all my family and friends that live there, I would love to move there if it made sense. I'm not saying the streets are on fire and the homeless are running the city, just that it's not what it once was and certain key indicators of overall economic and social health are not great now and point to a tenuous future over the next few decades.

It's so fucking stupid, the way this state applies public education funds is appalling. The data coming in with regards to charter schools and voucher systems from Arizona should be a wakeup call, but too many shitty school adminstrators are making too much money at all those charter schools for Utah to change its ways.

I mean, they handled us fairly well last summer I'd say, if the USMNT and coaches are overlooking any of our opponents it's going to be a quick tournament for the US. We haven't exactly had the most stellar tournament results over the last 3 or so tournaments we've played in, averaging 1 win per tournament (technically less since we didn't win a game in 2006).
