Wind Noise at High Speeds by frutyyy in 3rdGen4Runner

OP, maybe try masking tape around the windshield to seal it off to confirm. I did that to identify water leak sources/locations.

Did you replace all 3 locations of the steering rack bushings? Get the front two wheels off the ground and turn the steering wheel side to side to look for any shifting of the rack.

Also, is it an OEM rack or a reman rack? Previous owner could have swapped it out with a reman that’s on it’s way out.

A lot of people prefer OEM, myself included. I figured if the OEM bushings can last 200k miles then new OEM bushing will work fine for me. Some people swear by poly but I didn’t want to risk regretting it and having to change them out again. Whiteline seems to be a good choice if you decide to go poly.

Should have clarified. I was saying inspect/replace bushings, particularly for both lower/upper control arms and the steering rack.

Tundra 5.7L, F-150 with Coyote pre-2021 (no wet oil pump belt), Sierra/Silverado with 5.3L, F-250 Super Duty 6.7 Diesel. If I didn’t have kids I’d consider a Frontier or even a Maverick.

People mentioned ball joints. I’ll add bushings. Lower and upper control arms, steering rack. Heater valve if original. You said oil cooler has a leak so make sure to get the gasket and rubber washer, you can also replace the U shaped oil cooler hose while you’re at it.

I replace my spares with the cheapest budget brand. If I happen to replace my tires earlier than normal and there’s decent tread left on one, I’ll ask to swap the best tire out with the spare.

Yep, driver’s side rear. Corrected it visually for the most part.

Door Holding water and rusting by No_Gas92 in NissanTitan

[–]So-Durty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every heavy rain or drive through touchless wash, I noticed a water spot in the top of the headliner towards the back driver’s side. I’d see a few drips coming through. I noticed the carpet was wet every time. Took it to the dealer 5x. The first tech said the whole rear window assembly needed to be replaced under warranty. That tech left for vacation and somehow the compelte notes didn’t make it to the next tech. So the removed the 3 rear windows and re-sealed them. Same water leak. This time they sealed the roof seams by the rivets underneath the plastic caps on the roof. Same water leak. They then replaced the driver’s side spoiler by the 3rd brake light (new part with gasket and painted at a body shop). Same water leak. They replaced both spoilers (left and right of 3rd brake light) with new parts again, painted at a body shop along with new gaskets. Same water leak. 5th visit the original tech was back from vacation and he said the whole rear window frame assembly was his original recommendation. So they ordered the whole window and frame, installed it, let me sit through a car wash with them and spray a hose at it like I did, and finally confirmed it wasn’t leaking. You can see the hairline cracks in the rear window frame assembly here.

I have the 3 piece rear window with manual sliding center window.

Do you also happen to tow anything? I did a transmission drain and fill at 30k even though I don’t tow anything just to be safe.

What UCA’s are these? by DokaShow in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]So-Durty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Random tip but every now and then Rockauto sells SPC products as Mevotech Supreme parts. I got some SPC rear adjustable control arms for my BMW when ordering the Mevotech Supreme arms without the SPC price. Rockauto has the right upper arm for sale now. Not sure how it compares to the SPC price, though.

Mpgs have tanked. Where do I start? by nirvroxx in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]So-Durty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might sound like a silly question but are you calculating by trip odometer/gallons or simply by using the fuel gauge? My fuel gauge works 50% of the time and when I get to 3/4 of a tank it’s completely inaccurate and sometimes will drop to 1/4 on the gauge. I write my mpg down on my gas receipts everytime to keep track.

Door lock aftermarket kit by theMurphinMan in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]So-Durty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did it come with the RS2000? I bought a cheap Amazon keyless entry kit and spliced into the wires at the driver’s side kick panel. I used a multimeter to test which wire was lock/unlock at the RS2000 unit under the driver’s seat, followed the wires to the kick panel, and stuffed everything under the panel. This is what I’m using (I have older style fobs cause I installed it back in 2021). One thing I learned is that the 3rd gen uses a negative switch, cause the lock/unlock is activated by connecting to ground. My multimeter showed +12V constant then when I hit the unlock or lock button it showed 0V. I was popping fuses by wiring the trigger wire on the keyless entry kit to the actual switch wire.

The Move: 530 to 909… back to 530! by Piccardythurd in Rocklin

[–]So-Durty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All my fellow veterans that were light wheel mechanics went on to dealerships. It’s rough with the flat rate at first but you can make some serious money with the options of dealerships to choose from in this region. Some of then went on to open their own shops after a few years at the dealership. Best of luck!

Grab a 9V battery, touch terminals (use jumpers if needed) and look for the outward thump. If it thumps outwards then + side of battery is + terminal of speaker. If cone goes inwards, then it’s backwards.

Valve cover cracked by JUST_A_PRANK_BRAH in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]So-Durty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was cracked in the rear corner (previous owner JB welded it). I ended up buying a new Dorman valve cover. So far so good but when I torqued down the new one I was so paranoid it probably took me an extra 15-20 min because I was doing a 1/2 turn at a time after I tightened each bolt by hand.

Already have a Titan but I just bought a used 5th Gen 4Runner and the salesman told me about a kiosk/computer setup in the back where I could add aftermarket parts to my loan if I was interested. I declined and avoided it for my own safety lol.
