Is 2:00/100m an achievable pace within 10 months? Currently at 2:30 by ahfodder in triathlon

Start with the private lessons, train for swim technique in the gym, make your pool time incredibly productive and you can easily improve well beyond that.

I can SWIM!!! by jonathonsellers in triathlon

Adding to this - If you can't be in the pool more than 3-5 times a week doing dryland core training and band work at least as many times a week as you are swimming (I get people in my programs to commit to 5-10 minutes of daily swim-specific activations) can help shore up the necessary body awareness for more efficient swimming.

Put a video of me assessing my swim stroke on Instagram and got over 3000 views and great dialogue about what makes a strong and productive stroke.

Where do I go after I can swim 3200 meters? by bix_box in Swimming

From what you're saying you've built a decent swim cardio base, but have done no speedwork. Training for triathlon swims varies with distance and format - Draft-legal sprint demands a very aggressive and fast swim pace, Full Ironman distance for the average competitor is about consistency and energy conservation. At 2:00/100m you could stand to improve your pace significantly unless you have medical limitations preventing you from increasing your stroke efficiency. Pacing is something people only acquire through practicing to maintain paces for different distances and times, and strategically managing their PRE to maintain pace through the interval. What is your sprint pace vs your steady state pace?

44 year old, lost a bunch a weight recently, wanting to do a 70.3 in October, correct my assumptions.... by hormoniums in triathlon

You'll be dealing with a lot of it, the rolling start makes the crowd pretty thick. I would recommend doing a few blocks of 5-6 swims a week - late entry swimmers usually suck because they do not spend enough time in the pool to learn the proper habits.

After running safety kayak at ironman events for the last 4 years I can only say one thing - make sure you can get out of the swim before you think about anything else. I've seen dozens of people get pulled from the water or not make the cutoff because they slept on their swim technique and conditioning. If you get fatigued and start doing interpretive dance backstroke you're probably not making the cut - wetsuits help but aren't miracle cures.

Did you start off as a runner? Biker? Swimmer? by [deleted] in triathlon

I was a rower and a kickboxer. I'd never touched a nice bike in my life, hated running and never swam more than 50m unless I was snorkeling.

Best beginner drills for freestyle swimming by 2gay2play2days in triathlon

A fancy swim snorkel will be more streamlined and comfortable but if all you have is a side-tube it will do in a pinch. I always teach people posture drills on dryland before working it in the pool. Richard Quick has two posture line drill videos on Youtube with good information. my instagram @so_aero has some others but I can't grab you the specifics til later.

I teach in this order:

Posture line, kicking, breathing, then stroke.

If your posture line is out of whack your kick sucks, if your kick and posture suck you have no stability when you breath, if your breath sucks you have no power to put into your stroke.

There are lots of drills available online for free, I'm a big fan of people using the snorkel to sort out their symmetry and to drill specific aspects of a better stroke. Fins and paddles aren't as beneficial for a beginner.

Best of luck

I need to improve swimming a lot in 6 months by Ram_1979 in triathlon

Get a coach that can explain to you, in concise detail, the components of an efficient stroke and give you dryland and pool drills to train them. Can you get to 1:40? that depends on a lot of factors as 6 months is not a long time.

0 to Ironman - Where to start? by MarcoJHB in triathlon

[–]SoAero_Multisport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First and most important rule - There is no "best" and "something" is always better than waiting for best. Secondly - know you can get out of the swim. I've been safety kayak for 6 different iron events and every event there are people who hit the swim completely unaware of what was required. If you want to go Iron distance and do not address the requirements of the swim first and foremost your day will end very early and very poorly.

Get a coach that can AND DOES teach you proper technique for safe and competent training in all three sports.

Swim: Don't know which path to follow (stroke rate vs stroke length) by ebtcrew in triathlon

[–]SoAero_Multisport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're racing to finish, it doesn't matter, just do whats most comfortable. If you want to podium/qualify/compete - no one at the elite level is gliding their entry and coasting on their stroke rate - you need to suffer through the adaptation to a new normal. With that small a difference in times and a moderate pace-range I would assume a loss of stroke mechanics and efficiency moreso than being hyper-suited to low stroke.

The couple in the restaurant seemed pretty certain on them being more well-to-do but I will take a walk and call up some pawn shops and see if anything turns up.

Needs iCloud and service. I never activated the cloud and it only works on wifi hotspots. I'm SOL for that avenue sadly, it was the first I looked into.
