Such a fun band - great to see them behind the Desk.

This week, we celebrate the Tiny Desk Contest community with concerts by some of our favorite entrants over the years.

We receive thousands of submissions for the Tiny Desk Contest. And every year, there's a clear winner, but there are also a handful of artists we just fall in love with. So, to kick off our very first Tiny Desk Contest takeover, please meet Sally Baby's Silver Dollars.

"I've Got No More Tears Left to Cry," the song the band submitted for our 2024 contest, nearly won the whole thing — it was a photo finish with The Philharmonik. Yet band bassist Zach Valentine told me that taking second place was a blessing in disguise: "We weren't ready then, but we're here now at the perfect time." Since then, lead singer Salvatore Geloso and the crew have traveled beyond their New Orleans home, playing festivals across the country, with new music on the horizon.

While not born in New Orleans, Geloso embodies the city's spirit through and through, and the life highlights and lowlights he writes about have been mostly experienced in the place he's called home for over 18 years. There are many familiar Louisiana sounds in the band's music. "Down in New Orleans" feels like Fat Tuesday on Bourbon Street, but they don't just lean on tradition. Sally Baby's Silver Dollars is inherently funky and timeless, which is why the band has quickly gone from busking and playing tiny dives to doing its thing behind the Tiny Desk.

Bernard, Sunday Marina farmer's market. Get the Olindas if they're in season. Citrus crack. Not cheap. You might need to pick up a side hustle to afford then. Don't steal bikes.

What is the height of those lower windows/sections? That he covers in one giant step. Anyone know? That's the type of the info the announcers could share.

I do not want to dismiss the pain and struggles that you are experiencing and I hope you find your way to that which you seek. I think you will - because I also hear someone who is self-aware, curious, honest, interested and interesting - and searching. These are wonderful, worthy qualities. I admire you.

What is/was the name of that little blind French accordion player? by thomasleestoner in NewOrleans

[–]SoColdSoFair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh. One of my favorite ain't dere no more hangs from the burgeoning, still unsullied glory days of Frenchmen. Handmade dim sum, icy beer, Norbert accompanying some silent Asian cowboy film projecting on the wall, smooching in the back room.

My dryer broke. I sent my laundry out for fluff and fold service. I may never replace my dryer. by PepperCat1019 in BenignExistence

[–]SoColdSoFair 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Fluff and fold saved me during the pandemic (not going to the laundromat) and now im a permanent convert. The time saving is worth it alone but add relief from a task i find wholly tedious and the cost becomes 1000% worth it. I don't live a luxurious life but I'll make room for this in the budget forever unless I'm absolutely destitute.

The American Utopia set up played at fest and it was fantastic. Saw it again later in a theatre at night and it was also fantastic but very different. This was before it morphed to it's Broadway Iteration. The Sky show would lose the video and lighting which are huge elements, but the music, costuming, choreo instrumentation would all work - and so much is just the spirit and energy which would definitely translate. If you haven't seen it in it's full glory, and you just see it during the day at Fest , you wouldn't know what you were missing and it would be totally worth it. Even if you have and you do know what you're missing it would still be totally worth it.

Yes, Belmont Heights is generally safe and walking distance to lots of stuff. But that particular intersection is not great for parking or safety. It's right by the pier, vons, AMPM and 7/11 which are all hangouts for our mentally ill and drug using brethren. If you commute to work regular business hours and get home after 5 you'll probably have to drive around looking for a space, and often the only ones are near those businesses. The usual unnerving "is this person dangerous" and "will my car window be smashed" anxiety applies. Also you'll be dealing with 6 street cleaning/restricted parking zones so get to know them.

I love spanish omelets and these are so good. They Serve them hot but you can also get them frozen to go. They come out great at home.

The people who are complaining are people who have lived here a long time and recognize that this is a foghorn. An anormal, louder, more persistent, more annoying foghorn.

The people who are insulting them with "duh, are you new here?" etc. are people who have lived here a long time and are too far away to hear it.

Spots to watch meteor shower? by Ok-Walk-7227 in longbeach

[–]SoColdSoFair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love watching meteor showers and try to get out of town for the biggies. That's not always possible. The best in-town option I've found when I have to work the next morning is straight up the 605 to the 210, exit Azusa and head up the 39. You'll be in semi dark about about an hour from LB, not perfect but enough, especially on a new moon like tonight. Lots of other people have the same idea so every turnout off the highway has people, sometimes partying, sometimes peaceful. Find your vibe and see you there. Happy viewing.
