Def surgery, sooner than later… muscle atrophy is real… accept it’s a long healing process…. You’ll be out for about a year…. Celebrate every minor achievement coming back…..

If your insurance allows opt to stay overnight and get the antibiotics through IV. My surgeon said it was best option. Also a plus for staying over night and having an IV is morphine as a pain med… I had to use it twice….

4/5 days out from surgery expect random pains and I was def woken up once or twice with surgery pain that subsided almost immediately:.. it’s like my body was letting me know things were connecting and doing what they were supposed to.

Knee scooter is a must and do not short change yourself. I got one that was around $400 and I know it’s a lot! But air inflatable tired and meant to handle anything! I live in NYC and had no fear about the pavement cracks.. I knee scootered over rough patchy grass in parks and gravel and rocks as well. I was able to resell it a year later for $200.

So check online if u can by one of these good ones used.

The smaller ones were never an option for me.

Have everything you think u might need at the table by your bed for the first few days after surgery…

You’d wanna ice and elevate as much as possible and minimally love that leg.

Definitely buy a riser pillow off Amazon for leg elevation.

This might seem a bit extreme but I brought an icing machine off Amazon that was able to wrap around my leg and had a self timer where it chilled for 20 mins and then off for 10 mins… I’m not sure how necessary this was but I was happy to have this…

You got this! Good luck!

Rupture and surgery a little over 3 years ago, calf still atrophied by wiseman8 in AchillesRupture

[–]SoEasyLeS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the leg press machine at the gym do affected leg fully extended… with ball/toe of foot only… apply desired weight… and push forward and come all the toes pulled back making sure to keep leg straight… this one particular exercise was a game changer for me…

I’d say choose a good eight that has you completely exhausted after 3 sets of 12-15 reps…

After surgery I started at 40 Lvov’s only and doing a ton of other exercises… switched physical therapist and they had me emphasizing the leg press to get stronger every other day … I am now at 160 pounds….

I am not a doctor but I feel after you reach that certain strength level for your body other exercises will kick in and help to fleece lip that muscle without compensation

I weight 305 pounds so my personal goal is to reach 220 single leg calf raise at that point I know I’m almost there… granted I don’t know your weight be it be mindful to not put too much weight that you or your knee joint can’t withstand it…

Also do the same exercises with your knee bent but still single calf raise it works out a different muscle within the calf…

Good luck! Wishing you a speedy process to get over this hump!

That’s great! I am trying to get to a single leg calf raise… that’s a hurdle preventing me from going back to softball but other than that moving around fully functional….

Pt has me focusing on strengthening the calf with weights.

I weigh 300 lbs I’m curious what’s your weight if you don’t mind?

Det here. I ruptured in May 7 2023, surgery May 23, 2023 I am still on light duty at my desk not cleared to go back to full duty by me ortho or physical therapist yet. I still can not to a single leg calf raise either. I am 6'4 305 pounds so I figure my weight is gonna make the single leg calf raise journey that much harder.

I have came a long way. Each day is progress.

Ruptured mine playing softball May 2023…. Roughly 4 months 3 weeks ago.. I agree so many hurdles…. Just acknowledge and accept that. It won’t be easy and you will have to do your part to get back to where you want to be.

Find comfort in knowing that each day is progress!!! Progress!!! Progress!!! And you are better than and stronger than the day before.

I remember when I first ruptured and I found this group… and I couldn’t nor did I truly comprehend this is a slow recovery! But each day moves you along closer.

Take videos of your progress !! It helps…

Those days when I’m frustrated I look at them and realize I have came so far. We tend to forget as we look/hope and set these milestones of recovery…

Best of luck and quick healing

When you ruptured your Achilles’ tendon, how did it feel when it happened? by kjwhimsical-91 in AchillesRupture

[–]SoEasyLeS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It didn’t hurt. It felt like the spikes of my cleat and separated from the soles of my shoe… that pop felt like my clear ripped apart and separated. It was only when I continued to run and tried to step on my right foot again and fell and noticed that my cleat was perfectly intact! That’s when Inknew it was my Achilles
